Aang's trying to run away to go face the fire lord by himself or something. He's pretty much stranded in the middle of the ocean, and Yue appears to him for about five seconds to tell him not to give up.

japanese borrows characters from the chinese known as; kanji. the series is based on ancient china, not japan. And you must mean the japanese 'kana'. even those are borrowed from the chinese, however they are changed in ways.
You can tell it's chinese by martial arts, all these styles are kung fu. There are many different forms, just watch "Creating Avatar", they explain them,

The earth kingdom is based on china, like you said, although Kyoshi Island comes from Japan. Fire Nation would also be Japan, and Air Nomads would be Buddhism in general.
well, the whole world of avatar is asian and china influenced, but earth kingdom has a bit more japan than china, fire nation is pretty chinese based, with the dragons and architecture too, and air nomads are japan/china/nepal-ish/buddha. water is inuit and northwestern native american yep
i agreed .......the swamp benders are most likely the same with those of southeast asians......it's verry obvious ...from the boat structure to the people......air nomads are the same with the tibetans ..
