the color of her lower register isn't very attractive and you can really hear it when she makes the mistake. but her upper register is bright and it beautiful how she can soar on a single breath. the tempo is very slow and i suspect she was simply singing it by rote without interest or care and so she made the mistake. but since she knows instinctively how it should sound she was able to correct her mistake.
She does a wonderful job even if the tempo is much to slow. I think she did the best, but the conductor did not choose the tempo this arai commands.
The fiorituras in this aria have to been like artificial fires full of energy and move forward. She is in rage and the tempo should commit to the emotion Constanzes.
I always find it interesting that most great Mozart singers have been German or American, very few Italians, even though Mozart loved Italian operas above all else. La Devia is certainly one grand exception!!
Salve.
hehehe the amazing control of this woman! and the amazing breaths! maybe she just tried being too amazing and ran short of oxygen to sing it with one span... IMHO she remains one of the best coloraturas of history and her voice projects amazingly well. Some people just mistake horrible quality recordings with a picture of reality.
Hey, no one can forget the mess up that Kiri made @ the Met's centennial gala while singing Dov'é sono. Everyone makes mistakes. Though, I will say, I don't really like her in this role....
I heard her sing this role live at the Metropolitan Opera and she "stopped the show cold". In many opera houses, as at the Met, the level just under the ceiling makes the orchestra and the baritone and bass sound louder, but once one gets into the theater proper, a voice like this thrills! It may be where the viewer was sitting. Arrow
I have never heard her live. However, I find it very hard to believe that a voice this focused and well produced, with so much ring would have any trouble being heard. Sevoflurane: your comments seem to make the most sense.
I regret never having seen and heard Devia live so I can't comment on this matter. But sometimes smaller voices project even better than larger voices; this was the case with Pons, according to reports, at least until the end of her career (and she had just about the tiniest voice). Of course, the size of a singer's voice hardly defines its quality, although certain roles obviously require a larger voice to achieve the full effect.
In this repertoire she's really great, even in more dramatic roles like Konstanze. Her voice is really rather small, but here it doesn't sound like it, at least not in this recordig. Really great! The only version of this aria that's better (in my opinion) is Sutherland's version.
A friend of mine saw her as Anna Bolena. She said she could barely hear her when the orchestra played and the chorus sang, and she had to really work to get through the entire performance. So her voice is definately rather small.
Sorry but I saw her Anna Bolena as well. And I could hear her well. In fact the voice "runs" beautifully in the theatres (she even sang Violetta at the Arena...). If she worked so hard to get through how come she had longer breath spans than any other singer in "Al dolce guidami"?
To operamagnus-are you just completely stupid or are you just "high" on some drugs!! First, how can you say that her voice is small when you have not heard it live? Second, I have heard her sing live many times, and it is not a small voice!! She does not push her voice, like so many others! Please listen to singers live before making ridiculous comments!!!!
The "audibility" of a voice often has far more to do with focus than with size, which is why small, light, bright voices carry acoustically over a whole orchestra and chorus. It's the same phenomenon as a single piccolo being heard over a whole orchestra.
I don't think we need to have a discussion about this. No need to discuss the audibility of a singer who sang Violetta at the Arena di Verona when she was nearly 60.
I am sorry but you are the one who wrote to me in the first place. This discussion was started by somebody who had not even heard the artist live. If you feel it is overreacting...
io adoro la Devia...ma che succede al 5:29 - 5:33...ahiahi...anche gli Dei a volte commettono errori...non so pèer il resto cantata magnificamente ma non mi ha tanto convinto....strano perchè io sono un suo accanito ammiratore
Both the declamatory and coloratura singing of this very demanding aria are superb! I've never heard anyone put so much emphasis and power in the declamatory passages, while the softer parts are wonderful as well. The German diction is excellent. The "mistake" in that killer passage can easily be forgiven. Lilli Lehman would have been proud.
I think Devia is one of the best Konstanzes on record. Her strong low notes, vocal cut and fullness allow her Konstanze to sound properly heavy ( something that is rare). The coloratura and high notes are also impeccable (especially that very difficult sustained high C which she nails :)
