i dont understand why people are not convinced with tom cruise’s performance in this movie while on the other hand praise Nicholson and Sutherland , i actually think they all did a pretty good job but in the scenes that combine tom and jack or tom and kiefer i think tom had a greater presence and a more convincing performance , i also think tom is an underrated actor -not underrated star- hes done some pretty good roles but i guess ppl like to see him as the pretty face not the great actor

What makes this such a compelling scene is Jessup isn't entirely wrong in much of what he says. He has a point, but that general mentality of the end justifying the means that pervades national security does lead to abuse. Some people don't fully appreciate that Jessup basically framed Dawson and Downey for murder. He was willing to let them rot in jail because he's too important for the country.
