It's true. Barely a single tree in sight. Not to mention the almost total extinction of every species of native animal. This to me does not represent beauty. It only highlights man's impact on the planet.

I envy Scotland for the environment they have. Had my country had any high hills, we would never have been conquered so easily, or the conquerors would have paid a very high price for every piece of land we have. I wish we had high mountains on our eastern borders. Mountains can also shape a stronger nation's spirit.
@ 8:06 isn't that part of the scenery from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner? Where the guards chase the boy in the tree and Robin fights them? If not, it sure looks a lot like it.
I watched the first 5 episodes on youtube. It was fascinating info, but it was also rather disgusting how the desire for power and wealth controls the poor peasants and innocents. I think most wars are not caused from religion. They are caused by powermongers and covetous and greedy maniacs. A king or queen might be a good idea if they had integrity and cared about their country more than themselves, and had protection. Democracy has it's corruptions too. There probably is no perfect system.
@masterblaster848 I watch this documentary with intense interest even though I'm pretty sure I don't have any ancestors who lived in Scotland, but because Scotland shares a similar history with Switzerland of where I know I have some ancestry: they're both mountain folk who led peasant revolts around the 1300's and kicked ass.
@spiralcosmosart Serbs are also mountainus and proud, they had uprisings against Byzantine Empire and creation of independent state, wars against powerful Bulgarian empire peasent revolts against Ottoman empire 16-19th centuries, 1st breached Salonica front destroying Austria-Hungary, defeting Bulgarians, surviving march of death through albania. The greates guerrila resistence in occupied Europe in ww2 against Nazis
@masterblaster848 That all sounds fascinating. I wish they'd make higher budget films for these other documentaries of resistance. Switzerland, a very wealthy country that won independence large counrites surrounding them, should have made something like this, with footage of the landscape like Neil Oliver does, a long time ago.
@CrazyManChild667 I dont know whats your fucking problem and I dont give damn. Maybe U should visit a doctor, ok? If there is medecine 4 you brain illness.
If Scotland is independent you can forget fiscal aid for England which your area greatly depends on. The economic union won't bring you independence but another less understanding master mainly the Germans who are really the masters of the new system in europe. So start learning german and even french post haste.
@SCHRUBBE1966 You can believe me when I tell you that even we Germans are not so excited about this. Most of us can tell how things are slowly turning into a police state, and we don't like it. the reasons why we may be the "masters" of the UN is probably because we are paying out of out noses to finance it. That means the average guy does the paying. Don't expect us to see any real benefits from it.
The picts were launching cross border raids into Roman territory, there was no tyranny. The Romans didn't want to go any further north they were just defending themselves. They saw nothing of value in Scotland.
@Graham6762 9th legion of rome march into the uncounquered territory in northern britain and 9th legion of rome got massacared. They did try something offensive.
All argument aside, this series is not just the best history of Scotland ever made but arguably the best history documentary series ever. I think it is telling that, having watched the whole series twice I still can't tell what Neil Oliver's views on independence - or the Union for that matter - are, such is his even-handedness on all matters relating to the topic. He is similarly disinterested in his treatment of all contentious issues (and there are many) in Scottish history. Admirable.
@Taiginator I'll be in favour of independence for Strathclyde when the English are in favour independence for the previously independent kingdoms of Northumbria or Wessex. Let's not try to score silly points here, eh? (Besides, the Scots' debating skills will nearly always defeat all comers: we leave our mothers' wombs ready to argue.) The principle here is that no nation - or people who consider themselves a nation - should have to remain subordinate to any other. Equality or independence!
@Taiginator Ireland was never two countries grafted together: quite the reverse. It was one nation later divided by a foreign power. Scotland, however, was an independent nation for centuries before its king took over the English throne, leading a century later to the Union, and please mark that, *union*, of the Scottish and English parliaments. Since then its supposedly equal English partner has dominated & marginalised Scotland. That's why so many Scots now want *full* independence back.
@Sleepyscribbler actually Ireland was many small kingdoms up to the 11th century there was no one nation even then when the Anglo-normans invaded the island came under the control of the Lordship of Ireland and in 1541 the Kingdom of Ireland was established by the House of Tudor.
@Taiginator "I have a better idea, we stick with the union, leave the EU and establish trade routes with the commonwealth, pre EU style."
What is this we ? You live in the United States and I am assuming you are not even Scottish, I am assuming you are an American, so what does Scottish politics have to do with you ?
@Tatacchan "the most magical, sacred and heavenly place on earth" Scotland is not a 'pretty' country. It tends to the extremes of tough urban townscapes and soaring rural magnificence. Maybe that's why Scots arenthe most argumentative people on earth. :-) We do love a good fight! A fierce independence of mind - and, in many of us, of politics - is bred in us by the sheer power of what we see around us. Scoltand is "the little white rose ... That smells sharp and sweet—and breaks the heart"
@Taiginator I am quite aware of the geography of my neighbouring countries. I believe one day in the future Northern Ireland will vote to join the Republic of Ireland and there will be a United Ireland. Protestants and Catholics United! This will have more of a chance of happening if Scotland becomes independent. Then Wales would follow and England would then be last. So Scotland would be living alongside it's great neighbours once again - ENGLAND, WALES AND IRELAND !
One should beware of speaking ill about Roman rule, even as a Scot, since it will tempt a lot of people to recite the famous “What have the Romans ever done for us?” scene from Monty Python’s “Life of Brian” which will show how foolish it is to speak ill about the Romans (which is by the way mocking the anti-colonial leftwing moron of the modern world as well, who were predominant during the time of the Pythons):
REG: All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
REG: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads-- COMMANDO: Irrigation. XERXES: Medicine. COMMANDOS: Huh? Heh? Huh... COMMANDO 2: Education. COMMANDOS: Ohh... REG: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough. COMMANDO 1: And the wine. COMMANDOS: Oh, yes. Yeah... FRANCIS: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh. COMMANDO: Public baths.
I have been pissed off with the endless whingeing of the Scots for decades. But I found out the other day that my unusual surname (shan't tell you what it is, just take my word for it) is exclusively traced to Middle Ages Edinburgh and nowhere else.
So it seems I'm Scottish after all. Right then, I can do wode-smeared, ginger 'Scotsman' with a huge sword as well as the smelliest of them: bugger the English, we must have our FREEDOM!
Hey, I checked my surname (Gill) out on Hall of Names website they say it was Norman Viking, we invaded Scotland from a launch pad in the northern Islands and we had the honour of having our name embroidered in plaid which was a great honour, and it is one of the first Scottish names mentioned. We were given lands in Yorkshire England for fighting in the battle of Hastings then argued over the amount of land & must have lost that scrap with the King. No wonder I liked working in Scotland.
@glasgow1234 - "Let us be individual and united at the same time?"
Isn't that as you are now? United but individual with your own goverment? Why full independence? Even if you got it you'd hand it straight back over to Brussels, and you've seen with Ireland just how much they care about non-continental European nations. Better stick with the UK and face the EU monster together!
@dontbothertoreadthis id much prefer if the scots could make our own decisions rather than have them controlled by westminster, think thats the point he was making
@dontbothertoreadthis - no, it's not as we are now !! ...we have a limited government with limited powers, we are not equal in the union. Independence means getting the autonomy of government that our people deserve and - an end to the plundering of our resources by the English.
@dontbothertoreadthis When i said let us be individual and united at the same time i ment let Scotland be an independent country with England, Wales and Ireland as allies and close neighbours. I will never accept that Scots are "allowed" to govern over some things but not all things affecting them. And as for the European Union, i am all FOR it. Most Scots are pro European unlike in England. I want Scotland to be a state in the European Union rather than a region of the UK in Europe.
@glasgow1234 wrote: "I want Scotland to be a state in the European Union rather than a region of the UK in Europe." Then you automatically condemn Scotland to the same fate as every EU country: They are NOT allowed to govern themselves because of the big banks. Also massive immigration from third world countries (because of EU policy) will change your precious Scotland forever. Look into the backgrounds of EU leaders Van Rompuy and Barroso: they were both hardened communists.
@TheWNMan If i had to choose between Scotland being a region of the UK being governed from London with no international recognition at all or Scotland being an independent country in the EU being governed from Edinburgh and Brussels with seats at the EU, UN and other international organisations then i think you know what i and many Scots would choose. In Scotland we are PRO European. I know that is something you find hard to understand but it's something you just need to accept !
@glasgow1234 wrote: "an independent country in the EU being governed from Edinburgh and Brussels"
I won't accept, because I make up my own mind.
Many countries only "appear" to be governed by its home and Brussels. But the fact is, Brussels gets priority, even if it means putting thousands of people in a situation that they do not want. i.e., unemployment, etc. Apparently this is something that you don't understand. Did you even check into those leader's backgrounds? I doubt it
@TheWNMan * Democracy, and Communism both work great on paper.BUT when you add Man and his greed, and lust for power,BOTH FAIL.The background of Rothschild, would help you to better understand."London City",(1sq.mi. in London) is NOT part of England. Is a Country onto itself, houses the worlds Gold, with The Vatican. And is the Financial Capital of the World.Vatican, not part of Italy,as is The District of Columbia,in Washington, not part of the USA.The 3 form"The Crown"run by the wealthiest men on earth
@billy1212ist wrote: "Democracy, and Communism both work great on paper.BUT when you add Man and his greed, and lust for power,BOTH FAIL"
Nice try, but I already know this fact. More accurately, it can be stated as follows: Capitalism and Communism are the same. Further, that in every Western country, it matters very little who you vote for, they ALL support the same ridiculous policies. So today we have political parties that are mimicking each other.
@rivlukcoltd Scotland is not an INDEPENDENT country. We are NOT a sovereign state like the hundreds of countries in the world who are. We want to be recognized by all countries in the world as an equal partner and to be a full member of the United Nations to promote peace. At the moment we are just another "region" of the United Kingdom with no recognition or voice of our own.
@NoahTheZoophile heroine? female heroes??? It would seem you need to learn to spell your OWN language ;) and we don't buy shortbread, we SELL it :) It brings billions of pounds to the Scottish Economy every year...... Any other Xenophobic remarks ??? maybe you need a dictionary for that big word eh?
@glasgow1234 You didn't answer the question. All you did is point that i don't practice speaking English enough. But i'm sure you are a multilingual master.
If Scotland where to become an independent country it's economy would collapse within a week. That's not racism that's just life.
Yeah Scotlands main exports are shortbread closely followed by misery.
@NoahTheZoophile No it wouldn't, the simple fact is Scotland gives more into London than it gives back, in 2010 Scotland produced 194 billion worth of exports, 100% of it went to London, in return Scotland got 139 billion back, as well as a 3.5 billion extra spending budget, recently the conservative government halved the spending budget, what a bunch of cunts. Scotland's main exports are #1 export in UK (Whisky), oil, gas, renewable energy, 30% of Europe's computers, food, drink, timber.YouFail
@NoahTheZoophile ??? This is true economic facts, Scotland also has 8% of the UK population yet pays 9.4% of the overall tax. Scotland is being robbed being part of the union subsidizing Birmingham, London, Manchester, Wales & N.Ireland.

You realize being independent would just relegate Scotland to a third rate and utterly insignificant nation right? If you want to kill scotland in a day, leave the Union. Any scot with two pence to rub together would head south, your foreign investment would dry up, companies would leave, college graduates would head straight for england.
Anyone who calls for Scottish independence is either incredibly naive or simply hates Scotland.
Watch Doomsday, that pretty much sums up how Scotland would look without Britain LOL Though being a nationalistic nitwit, I'm sure to you that vision seemed like paradise.
@madhammudeux Well, as the comments of a YouTube video, with their word count limits aren't a particularly appropriate medium for in-depth discussions, I'll avoid challenging your opinions. However, I am rather interested in what would prompt a foreigner to even bother commenting on the imagined plight of an independent Scotland, would you kindly care to enlighten me?

The Scottish Picts enemy pretended to retreat, and lured the king into narrow mountain passes, where he was killed with the greater part of his forces...Many of the English at this time were killed, or forced to flee from Scottish Pictish territory.'Bede, AD 731.
@Lostfaith1980 Don't worry, I've made that mistake before. if you look at the way Caledonia is spelled, you can tell that the language is more simplistic and uses C where K is usually used. The proper spelling is Calgacus. the error was simply spelling, not pronunciation.

I've lived in Scotland my whole life and have been lucky enough to see some of the beautiful landscapes in this series. My mothers family, McNicol, come from the isle of skye, they're tall, strong built people, so I assume my blood line goes back to the vikings. Scottish history should be taught at school, it's inspiring.
@JoeMacpherson1 sure, a proud line of whores. As I recall it, we discussed whores often as younge lads in school. Plenty of proud scottish history there.
What we need is our clan to reform and fight off the english. Im 3/4 scottish, direct desendent from the Armstrong clan. I love our history, it makes me proud carrying the last name. "Vi et armis Invictus maneo", By force and arms I remain unconquered!

Pirates, outlaws,krajinas, revolutions, mercenaries. . .
masterblaster848 1 month ago
@masterblaster848 That all sounds fascinating. I wish they'd make higher budget films for these other documentaries of resistance. Switzerland, a very wealthy country that won independence large counrites surrounding them, should have made something like this, with footage of the landscape like Neil Oliver does, a long time ago.

If Scotland is independent you can forget fiscal aid for England which your area greatly depends on. The economic union won't bring you independence but another less understanding master mainly the Germans who are really the masters of the new system in europe. So start learning german and even french post haste.
SCHRUBBE1966 5 months ago
@SCHRUBBE1966 You can believe me when I tell you that even we Germans are not so excited about this. Most of us can tell how things are slowly turning into a police state, and we don't like it. the reasons why we may be the "masters" of the UN is probably because we are paying out of out noses to finance it. That means the average guy does the paying. Don't expect us to see any real benefits from it.

Admirable.
Sleepyscribbler 7 months ago
@Taiginator I'll be in favour of independence for Strathclyde when the English are in favour independence for the previously independent kingdoms of Northumbria or Wessex. Let's not try to score silly points here, eh? (Besides, the Scots' debating skills will nearly always defeat all comers: we leave our mothers' wombs ready to argue.) The principle here is that no nation - or people who consider themselves a nation - should have to remain subordinate to any other. Equality or independence!
Sleepyscribbler 7 months ago
@Taiginator Ireland was never two countries grafted together: quite the reverse. It was one nation later divided by a foreign power. Scotland, however, was an independent nation for centuries before its king took over the English throne, leading a century later to the Union, and please mark that, *union*, of the Scottish and English parliaments. Since then its supposedly equal English partner has dominated & marginalised Scotland. That's why so many Scots now want *full* independence back.
Sleepyscribbler 7 months ago
@Sleepyscribbler actually Ireland was many small kingdoms up to the 11th century there was no one nation even then when the Anglo-normans invaded the island came under the control of the Lordship of Ireland and in 1541 the Kingdom of Ireland was established by the House of Tudor.

COMMANDO 3: And the sanitation.

Er, I'll get my kilt.

Isn't that as you are now? United but individual with your own goverment? Why full independence? Even if you got it you'd hand it straight back over to Brussels, and you've seen with Ireland just how much they care about non-continental European nations. Better stick with the UK and face the EU monster together!

mcRioRemedy 9 months ago
@dontbothertoreadthis - no, it's not as we are now !! ...we have a limited government with limited powers, we are not equal in the union. Independence means getting the autonomy of government that our people deserve and - an end to the plundering of our resources by the English.
MrR6pilot 9 months ago
@dontbothertoreadthis When i said let us be individual and united at the same time i ment let Scotland be an independent country with England, Wales and Ireland as allies and close neighbours. I will never accept that Scots are "allowed" to govern over some things but not all things affecting them. And as for the European Union, i am all FOR it. Most Scots are pro European unlike in England. I want Scotland to be a state in the European Union rather than a region of the UK in Europe.
glasgow1234 8 months ago 24

I doubt it

Nice try, but I already know this fact. More accurately, it can be stated as follows: Capitalism and Communism are the same. Further, that in every Western country, it matters very little who you vote for, they ALL support the same ridiculous policies. So today we have political parties that are mimicking each other.
