  • I'm so jealous. lol SSgt Garza did this with the First Marine Division Band in 2010 and Sgt Lau did it with the Miramar Band. SSgt Payton set the standard for how this is to be played by Marine Musicians. My name is Corporal Balcorta by the way. =) I'm currently in the First Marine Division Band. I hope to perform this to your caliber one day.

  • Excellent flute! I adore this song...my son plays flute and played this at my wedding in 2005...just beautiful!

  • oh men....he´´s got such a clear tone

  • It may just be just a fictional story to go along with the piece but I too was told this when I first learned this piece by my instructor.

I like to believe its true. Helps you play with more passion

  • i'm practicing for this, omg! he played it so fast! am i suppose to play this fast?

  • @Florence8723 heh well i guss you just practice your bootie off! ;) yes this is a hard peice to master.. in fact im learning it myself!

  • I was playing in this!!! Go SWE 2007!

  • Seems kind of rushed (especially the cadenza) for my taste, but over pretty good performance :)

Im playing this with our Wind Ensemble this February, I'm very excited!

  • i am so in this orchestra XD this was what, 3 or 4 years ago? and now i am finally learning the solo [:

  • This song is the bane of my existence...

  • @bubbleskami how so?

  • @tomypaes It's a gorgeous piece but I've played it way too many times. I'm just tired of it, lol.

  • incroyable vraiment tres bon !

  • Where did you find the information about Chaminade being in love with a flautist? I've researched Chaminade in depth and the only "love interest" i have found was when she married Louis-Mathieu Carbonel and even then all sources confirm that it was a marriage of convenience rather than love and Chaminade herself stated that her only love in life was to be music.

If what you say is true then I would really appreciate knowing your source so I can draw from the source for my research. Thanks!

  • I'm not sure. It might have been SSG Payton giving the background of the piece during a rehearsal, or something I found online.

  • I performed this is a master class and was told the same - I think the flautist was taffnel?

  • I was told Gaubert in my diploma by the examiner (I thought it was Taffanel too) but it seems to be a story with very little evidence - nobody's sure it's true.

  • This is GORGEOUS. I'm playing this for juries on Friday and this recording makes me so happy :)

  • this is hard

  • does anybody know what measures c, g, and j are in the southern edition of this song?

i have the flute music by french composers edition

  • Amazing!

Nearly as good as Galway's version, if not better.

    I love his tone.

  • I listened to this song when i was composing a song for an orchestra, and it put me in the best state of mind. :)

  • Oh my gosh. This flautist is the best performer I have ever heard, playing this song. Wow!!!

  • MAN that requires extreme discipline.

    Amazing performance.

  • Beautiful Performance!

  • you bet it was. this was my favorite performance of all when i played in this group. Man, it makes me want to switch from the clarinet to the flute.

  • So very few Marines show their artistic side.

  • WOW 0_0...it's beautiful 0_0

  • That was fantastic, im playing this for song too hopefully i can get it down like him lol

  • The band does a wonderful job at keeping the volume to an acceptable level where the flute can be heard through the entire piece without a problem! When I've played this with orchestra its always a challenge to play soft passages and not get covered over by the orchestra. BRAVO for the flutist. Wonderful tone, sound, technique, etc.

  • wow...the flautist rocked, but the accompaniment not as much.

  • Good job, but the recording is so quiet, you have to turn the volume up really loudly to hear the flute! That's too bad, because it's good.

  • If the band version is not perfect, it's because this band is composed of kids.

At the beginning, it exist 2 versions, one for orchestra and one for piano.

On this video, it is an arrangement for wind orchestra (instead of symphonic orchestra), indeed, here, there are not strings for example.

  • hello.

    well done.

I would like to know who made the arrangement for band and the edition of this concertino.

    thankyou...

  • amazing tone quality!

  • omg so many flutes! there were only 6 flutes top allowed in my concert band. Great job! Looks really good in the uniform too. Bow chicka wow wow!

  • hes good, a lot of the rippy stuff in this is hard to play smooth and clean

  • I prefer the piano version too. The band version is not a perfect arrangement.

  • The band version always sounds out of tune

  • Im in this video! (Tenor Sax)

  • our high school band just played this for our concert. our soloist was pretty much as amazing as him

  • I played this solo for my High School State competition and final concert! I played with a piano for the competition but with the band for the concert. I prefer the piano as well.

  • Beautiful! It gave me chills to listen to this!

  • He's great! I don't think that the piece goes as well with a band as it does with a piano, but the man is good!

  • umm.. i think the lack of rubato was because he was playing with the wind ensemble.. they were my least favorite part of this video xP. the soloist is perfect though.

  • and no rubato....and his fingers are making too much work of it, you shouldnt be able to see them moving from this far away...right?!man am i critical today, but it's all helping,..i'm practising this piece now

  • hmmm yes i cant feel any expression though the technique is obviously excellent...i cant say i like it with wind ensemble either!ahhh horrible intonation..damn brass players hehe.how does a guy like that pick up the flute in the first place??haha

  • Just curious as to which band you are with? I'm with the 1st Marine Division Band, been in for a little under 3 years.

  • @fuvo13: I have to say you are wrong. It is not written for flute and piano originally, but most times you hear it with the piano. Actually the first version was for flute and wind ensemble. But later Chaminade wrote another version for symphony orchestra and after that the version with piano.

  • aww that's awesome

i want to be in a marine/army/navy/air force band, its really cool to see somebody who is

  • I just auditioned for the Marine Band but have a year to decide. I'm in JROTC right now. The uniform is cool and I will miss it, but when you are in the Marines you are a soldier first. You can see me play this too if you click on the luvsflute. Patti :)

  • Nicely done, though I agree better with orchestra...intonation in the low instruments is a little scary....This is one big guy...hehe...his flute looks tiny in his hands...nicely played, could have been a little more expressive, though technically he's perfect.

  • Excellent playing. What flute does he play on?

  • It isn´t a orchestral piece.

Originally it´s written for flute and piano.

  • This is correct.

  • @fuvo13 originally written for flute and orchestra. Flute and piano is an arrangement.

  • thats some really good solo playing but i prefer it with a symphony orchestra as originally written for. Im not saying the wind ensemble is bad but i find it odd when a concert band plays orchestral pieces

  • t sreally not bad , but he is like a general with a flute ... maybe a little b funny for me

  • Amazing.

  • so good!

  • i like when a full orch accompanies

  • very good!

    i really enjoyed it.

  • I think this is the best version and interpretation of this piece on the entire youtube network. You sir, are a real flutist not like all those fakers out there who have no musicality at all and not to mention technical ability. I congratulate you and its so cool that you are a staff sergent who plays flute. No other flutist with the exception of conservatory graduates could play the piece like you do.

  • i agree that he's definetly the best version of this song on the whole internet, but the "fakers" out there might not have wonderful expensive cameras or flutes and believe it or not you can't tell how good or fake someone is based on a single video on youtube.

  • Such clarity and precision! Best I've ever lsitened to yet.

  • listen to James galway s version ...

  • very fluid, gorgeous phrasing.

  • damn look how many saxsophones there r good i whish i had as many as that to play with in my orchestra. lol amazing

  • wow cool love it!!1 musicans rock lol

  • bravo!!!! :*

  • his hands move so...perfectly...and almost robotic.

I'm not saying its a bad thing, he's an amazing musician!

I also think he might be playing the tune very monotonously so it's easier for the band to play along.

    or maybe he's a robot.

  • excéllent!

    vraiment génial!

  • Sheesh....for a musician this caliber, so many beautiful places he's just blowing right through it! Damn it Payton!

  • hey, great to see my son's (audiomancer) flute instructor,,heard a lot of good things about him,,nice to see who took audiomancer in hand;-))

  • Hey, it's SSgt Payton! He was my instructor at the Armed Forces School of Music. The most atypical flute player I've ever met. I think he's about 6'5. I remember him playing some scales for me with the metronome at about 220 or so, 16th notes, and you could hear every note clearly. A truly amazing musician.

  • Great to see one of our GAH's (Great American Heroes) playing what many might consider a "sissy" instrument! Nothing sissy about that man! Sound was not up to par, but they all did a great job. Semper Fi !

  • umm. sounds so stuffy with the band. the band could've gone more with a stringy sound rather than band. think more string instead of wind. and it could've gone faster overall. the flutist did an amazing job though but the slow tempo ruined some of the mood. and it was very heavy in parts that would've been more effective if played lightly.

  • I think the tempo was perfect, this is a love theme... unfortunately some flutist take this piece as a show off piece (the middle section is and it's ok to play it fast) unfortunately James Galway made this piece popular, he played it like he wants to skip the love part and jump into "action" hahaha, well that is my opinion!

  • i wish the whole sound were far louder.

  • Simply amazing

  • Heh i'm in that video :)

  • Let's talk about how its nice to see a outstanding minority male flute player!

  • damn right.

  • and he is great!!!!! hahaha, I thought the same :)

  • this is absolutely beautiful.. I played this and it is incredibly difficult.

  • Nice but I wish the audio recording quality were better. Have you seen my flute videos yet? Tell me what you think.

    Thanks,

    Nina

  • I played that in high school for district auditions and then last semester I had it for my jury piece. It's so beautiful but I'm officially sick of it. It sounds really neat with a band!

  • I'm working on this piece right now, it rules. So difficult.

  • Damn. He's fantastic!

I love that piece--in fact, I just began playing it today, haha.

  • I see Hedda-lion.

    O-o

  • I'm in this organization but never heard the wind ensemble's performance. it's pretty high-quality as a junior ensemble :)

  • whoops, not orchestra. band. ><

    w/e

it sounds a lot cooler than with piano, anyways...

  • this is awesome! i've never heard the concertino performed with an orchestra before.

    yayness..

  • oh my god... thx for posting :P This piece is exactly showing that musicality and technique can both exists in a beautifull piece :P Just like Tchaikovsky's violin concerto :D other commentary: beautifull sound^^
