I got a Canon 7D which has built in wireless flash trigger. I've shot two weddings last year but I used the 580 on board, bouncing. Does the built in wireless work fine outdoors ? Why pro's use Pocket Wizards so much??
@florinmldvn82ro pocket wizards have range up to 1500 feet. the built in wireless flash trigger is generally infrared, which means that if your flash cant see it then it wont trigger... whereas pocketwizards use radio frequencies which are unfettered by obstacles such as people or walls.
@florinmldvn82ro pocket wizards are industry standard. They are used so there is no need to bounce light or use infra red which is only capable of line of sight triggering. you can get way more creative with lighting this way too. Your wedding photography game will also go up heaps with the use of external lighting. shots will look more creative and clients will be more thankful they splurged 2k+ on such on expensive photographer ;)
Hola, disculpa quisiera saber si has resuelto este problema. Tengo una 5DII, el inalambrico ST-E2 y un 580 ex, no puedo hacer sicronizar el inalambrico para que mande la señal de 2da cortina al flash. La camara solo toma en segunda cortina cuando el flash esta unido al cuerpo.
I guess the conservative Cactus V4 would have been a bad route as well... what about the rf-602 triggers? they are not expensive and I couldn't find any bad reviews about interference... can anyone testify?
because PW's use and transmit signal through radio frequency making them more reliable and usable at farther distances. The way most built in flash systems work ie. Nikon and Canon is through either visible light or infrared

Do I need a Pocket Wizard system?

So? Now I get it, when they are shooting fast only 2 of the flashes fire but when the shots are closer together, all four fire.

i don't understand, why cant u just have one pocketwizrad on the body and transmit to the 580s transceivers (without more pocketwizards)?

davidophoto 2 years ago
580 isn't made to receive radio commands, only infrared.
dbeardsleyor 2 years ago
gotcha ;) thanks, it would be nice though to find a device that's capable of tranmitting both IR and radio freq... those PW are quite expensive
kattanh3 2 years ago
Don't I know it. I wish the Canon system was more flexible, i.e. at least had PC sync ports.
There have been a lot of complaints about the PW with Canon flashes due to noise emitted by the flashes that interferes with the PW.
The Radio Poppers PX system seem to be more reliable but they are even more expensive!

shooting frame of the camera and the fps of the camcorder don't match so some you can catch the light but some the camcorder cannot catch it.
