The reason the video is called 100 foot wednesday obviously isn't because the producer believe THESE waves are 100 feet, but because that day in 2001 there was a set of a few waves(none of which were ridden) that were estimated at 100 feet.

It's not about who's waves are bigger necessarily. Yeah sure mavs can stack some massive waves, but at the same time, those waves aren't nearly as technical as, say, north shore. It's about how the waves breaks; which can all be explained by simple geographical features underneath the water. Maverics has a rocky bottom while Pipeline has a shallow reef. Completely different breaks. Nuffsaid.

The first time was in the Pacific about 100 miles off Fiji....this fuckin freak wave outta nowhere rolled in. We had two civil engineers on our crew who both estimated it between 140 and 150 foot.

@rurikvred The 100 foot set is shown at the end of this Video. Grant Washburn filmed it from up at the Radar towers later that day. It was a freak set of 4 waves starting at Flat Rock about 2 miles north. The set "shorebreaks" from Ross's Cove all the way through Mavericks - kind of a Makaha Bowl shutdown. The normal boat channel was completely washed through. There would have been loss of life earlier. Proves that Mavericks is one of the few known places that can hold that kind of size.
Oh yes... for sure I'd be asking myself "do I want to live, or do I want to experience total nature at its most beautiful but devastating."
Probably wouldn't paddle out, or even decide to take off -- but I'm four decades of living, so that's not fair. However, even 20 years ago, I probably would have been more comfortable on the shore with a camera!
Growing up in Palos Verdes, it was ingrained in us to hate jet skis with a passion. I still can't stand the damn things. The only time I think they are warranted is if the waves are completely out of control and there is no one sitting in the lineup. Other than that they really need laws keeping them away. 1/4 mile from the coast after they get out there doesn't cut it.

Bodie and I hit at the same time, we have it on film, but the only people who have seen it are close family and friends. Damn it was fuckin scary, it was like surfing off the top of the Empire State building. We had an ex-cop on our crew with a standard issue speed camera who recorded our speed at 220km/h. The first time was in the Pacific about 100 miles off Fiji....this fuckin freak wave outta nowhere rolled in. We had two civil engineers on our crew who both estimated it between 140 and 150 foot.

@rurikvred The 100 foot set is shown at the end of this Video. Grant Washburn filmed it from up at the Radar towers later that day. It was a freak set of 4 waves starting at Flat Rock about 2 miles north. The set "shorebreaks" from Ross's Cove all the way through Mavericks - kind of a Makaha Bowl shutdown. The normal boat channel was completely washed through. There would have been loss of life earlier. Proves that Mavericks is one of the few known places that can hold that kind of size.

Growing up in Palos Verdes, it was ingrained in us to hate jet skis with a passion. I still can't stand the damn things. The only time I think they are warranted is if the waves are completely out of control and there is no one sitting in the lineup. Other than that they really need laws keeping them away. 1/4 mile from the coast after they get out there doesn't cut it.
