  • Happy Birthday Tolkien, thanks for helping to make Fantasy a realty. To, The Professer!

  • Wow. Nice voice.

  • Where did you get those wings, you, Angel? You have a beautiful voice. You should pursue a career with your talent!

  • fucking gorgeous!

  • Beautiful voice

  • You have a beautiful singing voice!

  • beautiful voice!!!! i love you voice!!

  • The Audio sucks !!!!

  • I love it! Good job!

  • I really don´t understand why they chose that song for the "sacrifice" of Faramir. Okay, with the melody it sounds like some kind of lament. But actually it´s a walking song! -.-

  • @9Nienor When humans communicate vocally, the way we say something matters much more than the words we're actually saying. Scientifically confirmed and all. When speaking face to face, the words themselves are only about 10% of what we're actually communicating.

The melody sets the context for the words. With a cheery, rhythmic melody, it's a walking song. With this one, it's a lament of worldly impermanence.

Honestly, I think it's a great fit for the scene.

  • @cptjeff

That may be true. Nevertheless Tolkien, who created the original song, intented it to be a walking song and thats why it should have stayed one. I mean, The Lord of the Rings is his creation, so why do they have to change everything?

  • @9Nienor How do you know it was intended to be a walking song? Why can't it just be a song they were singing while walking? Why can't it be an innocent shire song that Pippin, when pressed, chose because the lyrics seemed fitting to him in relation to the looming battle and his loss of innocence?

And if we're talking about Tolkein, it would be absolute lunacy to suggest that he didn't intend the lyrics to tie into the world and the story.

  • @9Nienor I also just pulled out my copy of Fellowship, and read the relevant passage. It's not a walking song, and not intended as such. It's a supper song or a bed song (both of which I would think as tending to more contemplative music), but hummed out of context by the group as a walking song.

A few pages into chapter 3, if you want to read it for yourself.

  • @cptjeff

I´ve read the book often enough to know where it is and what it is. But as my mother tongue is not English I didn´t know any better word for it than "walking song", especially as the Hobbits sang it as one. But then it is, as you say, a bed song and therefore still unrelated to the events and as I guess, Tolkien intended a merrier rhythm for it,

  • No, you in reading the book interpreted the song as having a merrier rhythm.

And in terms of rhythm, how do you know that Pippin wasn't keeping the tune, but slowing it down because that pace felt more appropriate for the situation? I can certainly think of various traditional songs that can be sped up or slowed down depending on what you want to emphasize in it.

You're making assumptions based on your reading of the book and taking those assumptions as gospel.

  • @9Nienor what do you mean "change everything"? I'm so tired of those book fans taking a dig at the movie every chance they've got. You can't deny that the lyrics fit much much better with the melancholic scene of Faramir charging to his death. I say props to Peter Jackson for finding the connection here. Taking a song from as early as FotR and connecting it to something in RotK requires much more understanding and complexity than keeping the song as a merry walking song that it mite not even be

  • @9Nienor pippin said he didn't know songs for "evil" times.

these lyrics may refer to "walking" in the sense of leaving something behind...

But they can be interpreted in other way which is relevant to the situation. I like the choice!

  • @9Nienor Because it's saying that they're on a sort of hopeless walk through darkness. And that's what Faramir's doing, he knows it's going to fail, but he keeps going anyways. And the "all shall fade" part is basically about Faramir dying.

  • I LOVE EVERY THİNG ABOUT LORD OF THE RİNGS ! especially the soundtrack...

  • Why isn't pippin singing it.

  • @Leonniket because I covered the song. ;-)

  • Great vid. In truth, he only made the rythmn/tune, not the lyrics. The lyrics are in the fellowship of the ring.

  • @crazyredsimpkins

no one was disputing that man..

  • Most Beautiful song I have ever heard

  • very very lovely and amazing voice

  • @rain9129 thank you :)

  • @ page 103 ;)

  • I Love Billy Boyd! Wish I could meet him! Someday some how ill try my best to! :)

  • Billy's voice is soooo magical in soooo many ways.. mysterious yet magical.. and when i found out that Billy just made up a tune for this poem which was originally made by Tolkien, hands down to Billy.. such talented lads they got for the movie, which will always be one of my very favs.. :)

  • @09shohoku They had him make up the tune because they didn't have time to do it before shooting. He literally had a night to come up with it.

  • @09shohoku All true - but you do realise this is not Billy's version, don't you? ;)

  • /watch?v=md8VDETzoFY&feature=related Sorry for being critical, but until you can record better, I'm going to be listening to this one.

  • *_* <3 Awesome, just Awesome....

  • keep singin

  • This is hauntingly beautiful. Your voice is so amazing.

  • Beautiful, love. You could have been a wee bit faster, even though it is a dirge.(just creative critisiam, you dont have to take it.)

    Keep singing, darlin'

  • Haha well, like always, Wiki is wroooong again. This is a poem made by Tolkien himself. Billy just made up the tune for it. Never listen to Wiki....

  • @DarkJafar I only do ONE post to trolls, and I am never posting again.

  • BEAUTIFUL...Waw :O

  • really, really good job. You should sing the full song! :p

  • just beautiful

  • what a voice!! I am amazed!!

  • The song in the movie is an adaptation, by Billy , called "The Edge of Night", of "The Walking Song" poem from the first book in the LoTR series written by Tolken.

  • That just gave me goosebumps. While of course I love the original from the movie, your rendition was BEAUTIFUL. You have an amazing voice.

  • Even in poor quality this song is amazing

  • beautiful voice...!

one thing- i don't know how it's Billy's composition if it's a song by Bilbo in The Lord Of The Rings books, meaning it would technically be by Tolkien. Maybe Billy made the notation for it? Either way, amazing job!!

  • @xAizaOnigirix ...... The song in the movie is an adaptation, by Billy , called "The Edge of Night", of "The Walking Song" poem from the first book in the LoTR series written by Tolken.

  • Very pretty (:

  • the most beautiful song in the world maybe? and you have a beautiful voice!

  • make another one with better sound quality.

  • <3

  • so sad.... i hope your happy!

now i shall think of the many perils of the world while this is in my head!

  • What fairie tail you from girl?

  • That was haunting and absolutely beautiful =)

  • wow, i got chills.

  • This is an absolutely brilliant version, your voice is so beautiful. I don't want to sound like I'm on a begging mission or anything, but I make videos and I'd love to be able to use your cover of this song for one in the near future with your permission?

  • Love the voice :) You did great!

Though I still think the movie's version is unbeatable... the pure, male voice just seems to go with it so well.

But again, kudos to you! This is my favorite cover of it :)

  • you're an amazing singer. i'm learnign this song for my next singing exam. is there anyone who can tell me where to find the full song with music added to it? x

  • NERDGASM!!!!

  • beautiful...

  • amazing!!!!!!

  • @Klaacki billy wrote that song not Tolkin u cannot find it in the books, it was created for the movie only google it ;)

  • damn, you gave me goosebumps, great singing :)

  • very nice.

  • btw. this song was written by a young new zealander who was strongly ill ! Before cinema release he died of his disease ! R.I.P

  • is this like Suzanne Boil or something? it's really good.

  • @Steedrider, is you singing? Thank you, that is very very good.. I'm your fan hehehe Kiss me? kkkk

  • If like Lord of the Rings is a nerd's thing, yes, i'm a great nerd.. :P With proud!

  • bone chilling experience

  • THis is gorgeous. You have a beautiful voice honey!

  • Billy Boyd (the actor who plays Pippin) wrote the words and music to this song himself- Howard Shore the film score composer for LOTR just added some background instrumentation

  • @QueenBeatlesWings Actually, Billy Boyd only wrote a few of the words to Edge of Night. It is from the original books. He did write the melody to it however.

  • Beautiful. Enjoy the knowledge, that you made someone's day so much better. Thank you.

  • I usually avoid covers but something made me click on yours and am I glad. Your voice and rendition of this song were touchingly lovely. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Merry did it better, but this one is good too ;)

  • PIPPIN!!

  • nice!!

  • Good voice, you should learn the full song. Read the Fellowship of the Ring, the hobbits sing it before they get to Bree.

  • @Mithrandir1776 i can't find this song in the book......okay, I'm german, but there must be a translation......is it before or after they met Tom Bombadil?....do you know the name of the chapter?

  • @Mithrandir1776 where can I find the full lyrics?

  • @Mithrandir1776 not true btw

  • @Mithrandir1776 Hear hear! The youth of today doesn't have any knowledge of the books unfortunately :(

  • Excellent job. You have real talent. I'm a big fan of the movies and loved this song and now I wouldn't be able to tell you which version I like more....... yours or the official soundtrack. If you live in Saint Louis, I'd love to buy you a drink!!!!!!

  • Your voice is so beautiful... It is what I long to hear on the radio...

  • you sing this??!!!

    beautifull song

  • The guy that plays Pippin wrote it.. He is also in a band :P

Great cover btw.. I love you

  • Well actually I watched a cast interview on it. They had gone out to Karaoke and Billy Boyd(pippin's actor) was a really good singer. The movie playwright was tone deaf and really wanted a song to go with it.

She asked him and he had about a day and a half to do it. He read up a little on the Stories and wrote it so it would be like the Hobbit's and how they came to the Shire for the first time on a long journey. He said he thought it fit it.

  • heartwarming

  • ur joking, u did not sing dat!?

    it was downright beautiful!

  • great voice, but the sound quality doesn't do you justice. If you were to re-record it so that it sounded clearer it would be spectacular!

  • the lyrics are actually from the book, from a hobbit walking or travel song or something...

  • You have a beautiful voice! I'm going to sing this song according to YOUR voice.

ps. I'm a twelve year old GIRL by the way.

  • It's not the original?! You're kidding!! That was amazing. Beautiful.

  • @RoseTyler31 now all it needs is the creepy/sad music underneath

  • I just wanna tell people that Billy did not write this song. He wrote the melody. The song is actually a poem found in the Fellowship book.

  • it is indeed his own compossision, if u watch the special extended edition, it says they wanted 2 do his song in the book, but thers no actual song in the book(i think) so they c about him singing, and apparenlty som of the cast went 2 a kareoke thing and he sang, and they asked him 2 write a song,(im pretty sure) u would need 2 watch the special extended edition behind the scenes 4 the whole story...

  • Great voice, just need a bit more of work on pronounciation. <3

  • nice voice.. but I immidialty heard the change between you and pippin:)

  • wow...just...wow....amazing.

  • lol^^ wir haben ja die gleichen singstimmen =P

  • A large portion of this song's lyrics are in the first book.

  • u hve the best voiceive ever heard : )

  • Billy wrote the melody and sang it, yes, But the lyrics were already written and givien to him. I love this song though! It´s so beautiful and he is such a talented singer. LUV IT

  • @Sandra2Jonsson What i heard was he made it all, including lyrics. he had two days to do it, and no one had heard it before. he thought about what place and situation he was in and how it had to be something pipin's ancestors must have sung and wrote the whole song. it was entirely original. i agree he has and awesone voice. this is a great song. i wish i could write like that.

  • GOD DAMN!

  • Your voice is lovely.

  • amazing voice!

  • after lookin at the comments.. isnt this the music from the movie?? if it isnt WTF it is almost exactly the same!!

  • Billy Boyd did the singing for the movie. He has a light voice, but it's still distinctly male. The singer here is obviously female. So no, not the same. Still a great song though.

  • WOW! i thought I was listening to a professional recording for a few seconds. Your voice is gorgeous and perfect for celtic music. Great breath control, and I can really hear the emotion.
