Ground Zero is a symbol for the families and friends of the 3000 victims of 9/11. It is sacred ground for them, and this idea defiles that area. My concern in all of this is that Obama is disobeying his oath of office. NY has offered a free site for the Mosque away from ground zero, in replacement for the site near ground zero. But, being offered a free site which may not be as good for them may not be something they want.

@mcap52 I had to look that up, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is having trouble starting building, but no one is saying they can't or should. This build is in the same block as the two towers, that add some difficulties that being 2 blocks way may not. I mean, have you looked where this church is? Basically, they site is currently being used by roads for buses and truck from Ground Zero. While there is a tone red tape, they have a promise from the city the Church will be rebuilt.

If it is built, it will stand next to a memorial that will overshadow it for future generations and be so great that the mosque will be a distant memory. @mtnmanquin First, there "Mosque at ground zero" isn't at ground zero, it is 2 blocks away. It is a private land, so New York had nothing to do with the cite need ground zero. NY has offered a free site for the Mosque away from ground zero, in replacement for the site near ground zero. But, being offered a free site which may not be as good for them may not be something they want.
Liberals have always cared for the constitution. All the ACLU does it support peoples constitutional rights.

@USAon3 Um you are wrong on all counts. We need to tolerate all religious, or give up on the US constitution completely. We did not nuke japan to send a message for Pearl Harbor. But is was a reaction to the number of people we had lost taking a few small islands and the amount of collateral damage done. The US lost over 100,000 soldiers in the Pacific, and taking Japan would have cost millions of lives. There where 100,000 ppl died in the Tokyo bombings, more than either the atomic bombs.

Well, really it was just "under God", it read "one nation with liberty and justice for all" before then. It was changed, not do to the "fact" that our nation was found as a religious institution, but as a reaction to the "Godless Communist Treat"

The right to build a mosque is protected by the constitution. The way in which nuking Japan saved lives are at that point in the war we had two choose, nuke or invade. The nukes = less deaths then invading. Nuking a few cities in the Islamic world would most like make far more terrorist that it would ever kill. The entire world would be hate us and the US trade sanctions alone would likely destroy the US.

I think it would be best if the built somewhere else, but they have every right to and the government has no right to stop them. The government does not, and should not tell any religious group where they can or can not build a church/temple/ect, on private proporty when it obeys all over laws for that area. @mcap52 I had to look that up, the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is having trouble starting building, but no one is saying they can't or should. This build is in the same block as the two towers, that add some difficulties that being 2 blocks way may not. I mean, have you looked where this church is? Basically, they site is currently being used by roads for buses and truck from Ground Zero. While there is a tone red tape, they have a promise from the city the Church will be rebuilt.

It is entirely legal to not allow anything to be build in a particular place, but it is not legal for a building site to be approved and then told "It can't be a religious institution". To an even large degree when it is "It can't be one particular religious institution"

This clip does not show the whole speech which offers additional clarification. The poster isn't supporting religious freedom. What if your religion hurts my feelings? Can I stop you from building a church near my house? Can I tear down your cross hanging in your window? Who gets to draw the line? We've all decide we should let the courts draw that line, because we hope justice is blind. It isn't always perfect, but it is what we've got. Please consider making it work.

i beleive that everyone has a right to religious freedom. i myself and i christian. i do beleive that they should be allowed to build a moqsue anywhere...except near ground zero (and a few other acceptions of course) i have no problem with the mosque it is where it will be placed i have a problem with. nazism is a religion too but you dont see a nazi shrine anywhere near auschwitz do you? NO! i beleive in compassion and acceptance but this will only create separation and anger. nothing good .
