Hal Rugg on that big Franklin steel and doing a hall of fame job as usual. Just a little side note, Loretta Lynn never had a number one hit unless Hal Rugg was playing on it. RIP Mr. Rugg.
Hal rugg great player Sho_Bud lttle softer not as stark stand out like a Emmon's but bothe nice instruments he was Loretta Lynns road steel player sad he passed on have album Steel Guitar Express all the great players on itl
If that's the Gregg Galbraith I think it is, we grew up together and got our first Fender Strats within weeks of each other. The difference: he went on to be a top performing and recording
guitarist in Nashville and I spent 38 years doing personnel work. You go pal !!
I was just watching this by k.d. lang! This is an awesome re-creation of the back up on that song. I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Hal play. Rest in Peace, Hal.
You're right about the drummer. I imported this into Cakewalk Guitar Tracks and timed it at 128 beats/minute. It doesn't vary enough to even be noticeable from the opening cymbal crash to the closing kick.
This doesn't sound impromtu! Sounds like they played this tune together a million times. What a good sound. So grateful you are posting these things. Need to get to a steel convention soon.
Hal was a most wonderful picker and person. He is missed by the entire steel guitar community...He was truly creative in everything he done.....His music will live on....
Thanx for that info. I thought this was a great song, I know it by heart. But have never heard the K.D. Lang version. Kudos for posting from a guitar picker in North Carolina.
Bill, this is mutz1950 again and I am just so impressed with Hal and his wonderful talent. I just cannot remember who he worked with mostly. You are to be thanked so very much for all of this and of course the hard work.
Hal was the signature steel guitar sound for Loretta Lynn for many years. He also played on the Wilburn Brothers TV show, and later on he was the steel guitarist on the Statler Brothers TV show. He was also one of the staff steel guitarists for the Grand Ol' Opry for several years, and he also toured with George Jones at one time. Also, Hal has played on countless recording sessions.
Scotty, If you have more of these videos get them out. These legendary players are no longer with us. I was at this show when he played this and all I can say is wow!
Special thanks to you, Steelpicker (Mr. Ferguson), for preserving and posting some of the greatest steel guitar performances of all time.

This song was written by Harlan Howard and is older than KD's career.
It was recorded by Billy Walker and Little Jimmy Dickens to name a few.

Top quality musicianship! To be able to play music with musicians of that quality must be awesome.

They're playing in Bb. Not a widely used country key. Interesting...

Anyone who has played steel knows the faces and head nods you make when you get into a song. Hal was a head nodder and extremely versatile.

I remember this song from the Grand Ole Opry. It was a man who sang it though, about early fifties.

Yes that would have been the great Billy Walker. Hal played on his recording and later on the KD Lang recording of this same song.
