  • It makes me sad that Tecumseh went under, always found them to be simple to work on. Never have found many problems with their gravity fed carbs except the ones with removable plastic emulsion tubes, the emulsion tube o-rings deteriorate badly, probably from the ethanol they blend into gas these days.

  • I can't stand how people just leave their lawnmowers setting up all winter without stabilizing the gas!!!

  • After spending many hours and dollars trying to fix my mower, I noticed that the washer for the screw that holds on the cup on the carburator was worn and split.

1 trip to home depot and $.72 later, I think I found the culprit. Mower seems to run without stopping now. But we shall see.

  • My 6.5 HP Toro had the small hole by the threads of the main jet plug up. Cleaned it with a wire and it has run fine for three years!

  • Most likely your combustion chamber will need cleaning as well after viewing that spark plug.

  • good vid. I have a question. on the mowers that have the port where you connect a garden hose to clean out the deck, do you do that while it is running or when its turned off?

  • @pivotboy63 yes when it is running

  • I followed your video instructions, saved my TORO mower, which stopped after running for about 20 - 30 seconds. I was about to give it up after trying everything I could (changing air filter, oil, gas) until I discovered your video. Step by step instruction in such great details helped me tremendously. I opened up the carburetor and sprayed clean it, changed a new fiber washer. Now it runs like new. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. You are a hero!!!

  • @rshi1972 thanks for watching!

  • @rshi1972 IF YOU NEED PARTS CHECK OUT RONCO CENTER . COM

  • Thanks for the guide. It sounds like mine may be suffering from a similar issue. Though I am about to head out to the garage to do what you suggest, do you have any recommendation on way it occasionally surges when first starting? It will surge a bit, maybe choke itself out once or twice, and then settle into a steady rhythm, Any thoughts.

    Great video!

  • Victory! My mower started after a half dozen pulls. A bit smoky. I am using non-ethanol gas that was recommended to me. However it is over 92 in sunny, humid Florida. It is a Pyrrhic victory! Now I must actually use the lawn mower! What is the best way to keep the mower when not in use? Is draining the gas tank necessary?

Frank- please excuse my nasty Sicilian Youtube name, donyboy73

  • @ahfongul lol, the best way is to put fuel stabilizer in it. i assume in florida you will be using it year round

  • Best video I have come across on the Toro 6.5 with Tecumseh engine. thank you for your clear, patient and detailed directions, including the linkage advice. I spun my wheeels for hours untill I discovered your helpful video. Thank you. You have set a high standard for Youtube instructions, professor!

  • @ahfongul thank you!

  • @donyboy73

To my surprise and chagrin, after a few days of sitting after using it after the repair I praised so highly, I found the gas tank completely dry. After I filled it, gas began gushing out of the air filter. I could do nothing to stop it except pinch off the tubing and tip the mower over. What happened? How can I fix the mower now. I have removed the carb? Did I break something? It running fine after the first repair!

  • @ahfongul the needle might be stuck. you might want to replace kit #631021b, also shake the float to make sure there is no gas inside

  • @ahfongul either the little needle slipped off the float or you need to replace the "float seat". What's happening is when the bowl on the carb fills with fuel, and the float rises to the top of the bowl it should be forcing that needle up with it eventually closing the fuel inlet. Yours is not and therefore gas fills the bowl and then flows into the carb and out through the vent tube into your filter. Just get a needle and needle seat kit (about $10.00) and install it. Simple fix.

  • i have the same mower it was leaking gas and had reallly trouble to started.i did everything on the vvideo and started right away but the gas leak got worse it looks like it is leaking from the carb ring (seal) i have changed it already u got any idea what may be wrong????

  • @richard2007ab make sure the float has no gas in it. doublecheck that the o-ring is on there properly

  • Thanks for the close up on the linkage. :)

  • Hey what a great video.

My problem i think was that the Carb Spring clip & the other clip were connected the wrong way round.

Works much better now although the revs are a bit up & down.

    Many Thanks though.

  • @Equalizer718437 thanks for watching and subscribing

  • Can you discuss the purpose of the outlet hole with the ball bearing on the bottom of the fixed jet?

    Nice video's btw..good editing buddy!

    -azpitbull

  • I have the same lawn mower with a similar problem. But I found out that I just needed to replace the float (although I replaced the needle and the o-ring, too). I couldn't have done it without this video! My husband says I am awesome and he can't believe that I fixed it without his help! Thank you!

  • @sarahroserogers1989 nice to hear that!

  • Same model mower I am working on - This vid TOTALLY helped me. Thanks for posting!!!!!!

  • @MEGAVIDEObro i would check the carb

  • @MEGAVIDEObro j19lm is good too, same as rj19lm, the "R" stands for resistor,

  • Hey Dony, Got this 6.75 Tecumseh push weedtrimmer started, finally. But, I noticed an oil leak at the base of the motor it seems to be all around. Could it be a gasket, oil pump/sump or something else? Thanks again, Armando

  • Great video, just what my Toro needed! Thanks for putting these out here!

  • Thanks for your video was very helpful.can you tell me if you have a video on how to repair weed trimmer, my brand is weed eater bc 2500 le if you have a video can you post it on youtube it would be great to see it.

  • My lawn mower wasn't working.....I followed the steps on the video....my lawnmower sounds and runs like new! THANKS!

  • great video. worked perfectly. Thanks!

  • Another successfully repaired mower! Thank you very much

  • Great video, very informative and well done. My mower won't start, even after trying all the steps you demonstrated. Any thoughts on why it still won't start?

  • Great video - I need your help when I removed the carb it was difficult to pull off so I think when it came off it pulled the linkages - When I put it back together the mower runs way too fast and so loud I'm afraid to use it - what can I do to possibly fix this?

  • @jcwhite821 i the video i show wherethe linkages go

  • @jcwhite821 I put them back the same way but could I have possibly bent something when I yanked the carb off? What could cause the engine to run wide open (way too fast)?

  • thanks for the video it was very helpful.

  • This video got my mower running again and probably saved me a lot of money at the shop. Thank you very much donyboy, you're a baller.

  • Hi, very good video. I have a problem with the pull cord to start the mower, because at the moment it is really tough to pull ( I have checked for knots in the string but there wasn't any) is there any way to fix this problem? I have an old Mountfield Empress 16 sp if that is any use to you? Also just to the side of the carb there is a black tube when which I pull the cord I once saw what I think was oil coming from it o_O Yes, I am a noob with mowers ! haha

  • Just wanted to say thanks. My mower is the same type and had the same dirty carb issue. You did a fantastic job with this video - made it easy.

  • this video was really helpful. i now have successfully repaired the mower.

  • after my tower not wanting to start for past 3 months i changed plug and filter still nothing. after seeing ur video and cleaned CARB wow it started like brand new mower. thanks!!

  • I have the same lawn mower as the one in your video and I am trying to get the transmission/transaxle off. I am especially having trouble getting wheel pinions, klip ring and thrust washer. So far I have not found a video that shows how to do this.

  • @MarilynWeakley unfortunatelu i don't have a video either at this moment

  • Thanks for posting this video. I have exactly the same engine on my lawn mower and experienced the same problem as you described at the beginning. Following your instruction resolved my problem!

  • @beltoneamp very good! please tell your friends about my videos

  • Thank you for this video, it was very thorough and a huge help.

  • I am a technology guy, and I never thought I would be able to pull the carb off and let alone fix my mower! Your teaching is excellent, granted, I wasn't as fast, but I followed the steps and now I am mowing the lawn! Great Job, and keep up the good work!

  • @ckasper777 thanks for watching

  • Great video. I have the same mower and would start after priming and then stop shortly after. I turned it on its side, took off that brass screw(without taking off the carburetor or anything else. I cleaned the little holes in the screw/bolt with a pin and then put it back it. After this the mower ran fine. BUT - I will do the other maintenance(spark plug, filter, carburetor cleaning) soon. Thanks for this video.

  • donyboy73: THANK YOU! I just did exactly what you showed and my 2004 Personal Pace Recycler runs like new again. (Forgot the Stabil last fall) Your videos are very well presented, explained, and to the point. Clearly, you are a professional and a very good teacher. I contrast your work with other, non-donyboy73 videos which are actually quite terrible. So thank you!

Actually, it is starting on LESS than one pull! About half a pull! So thank you!

And I dig the Canadian accent to, eh! :)

  • @DBB123321 thanks man, tell ur friends about my videos

  • Are Tecumseh engines reliable and is it a American company? I have a Toro that I got in 1990, still runs great, I want to stick to American made for a new lawnmower.

  • @dolphinsattack Tecumsehs are American, u won't find them anymore on small equipment, but briggs is also American

  • Fantastic video. I have never serviced my lawnmower before but was able to follow this and do it in just over two hours and my mower fired up! Couple quick things that weren't 100% clear but figured out. 1) the "fixed jet" is simply the main carburetor bolt. You started clearning it and I was like "where did that come from?" 2) Wear gloves as shown 3) There will be gas spillage - be prepared 4) whether you are checking the gas or not, remove the fuel tank as shown. Again, THANKS>

  • Comment removed

  • ok.. found the answer. There is an air intake screw that is hidden behind a plastic cap. It is set up like the main jet that is screwed into the bottom of the main jet. it has 2 side holes and one very very small hole that if is blocked the mower will not run. That was my problem. If this helps anyone I will feel my hours on this thing will not be lost.. lol

  • @moz2007 i made a video of that screw on snowblowers with tecumseh engines, good that u fixed it

  • @donyboy73 Hey thanks for putting up these video's. I am very much a novice. I only really knew to look up the video that looked like mine.... lol. Either way I plan on using your video's as small engine advice, its invaluable!

  • @moz2007 where exactly is this screw? is it the same screw he took off the carburetor on the bottom or is it a different one. I'm having trouble making my toro recycler start in exactly one pull.

  • @playman9111 sorry this took so long playman. Its covered by a plasic cover. As look look at the carbureator as its mounted you will see it right abouve the bell that holds the gas. its next to the bulb that pumps the gas. at 2:26 you can see it. ITs a dark part between the red bulb and the silver bottom of the carborator.

  • i was having issues with mine starting not running. I put in new gas changed the spark plug, and new air filter. Checked spark but now I get nothing not even a sputter. I had taken of the carb and cleaned it once and got had the same problem of it not continuing to run. Any ideas why it does not seem to even want to start now?

  • 631021b Only came up the needle and seat.

I need everything Intake gastkets too.

    Thanks for your help Dony.

  • What would the carb rebuild kit number be for this same mower and engine?

Mine will start but shut rite off, I cleaned the carb and replaced the spark plug.

As soon as i spray quick start in it start rite up but dies. Any idea's?

    Thanks

  • @TRcustomengineering the kit # is 631021b and make sure you have removed any old fuel from last year

  • I didn't take the whole thing off to clean the carburetor just the float bowl which I ended up replacing along with the gasket. Put back together and it still won't start. So I finally took it apart like you show in the video. There is a rubber line that has a flat head connected to square connector that connect to the fuel that is split. How do I fix this?

  • @PrairieFrost you mean the fuel line connector on the carb?

  • @donyboy73 No, I wish. Its a round, I believe flat disc on the metal part of the lawn mower with tube that has another connector that connects to the carb.

  • @PrairieFrost that wouldn't stop it from working

  • @donyboy73

The split or cut is prevent gas from getting into the carburetor.

  • The oval breather tube is damaged, how do I remove it?

  • Great video. Thank you. I was able to clean my carb based on your video. However it still wont start unles I spray carb cleaner in the air intake.

The primer bulb does not seem to do anything. If I cover the little red tube in the air intake I can hear air moving when pressing the bulb.

I have good spark so I am sure the problem is fuel related but do not know where to go from here. Can you help?

  • @schmacker1 u might want to replace the kit part #631021b from tecumseh

  • Thanks for the awesome video! I have same mower. I took about 15min to do everything. Started first time.

    Great job!

  • Thanks for this great video you just saved me a couple hundred bucks.

  • tecumseh is the worst please only buy briggsandstratton

  • Man the shroud on that Tecumseh looks sweet! Haha nice video man! I did a tune up on my 2003 Murray with 4.5 Briggs and she runs like a bute! first pull start every time. Ya just gotta maintain them and they last for many years :)

  • My 22" Toro 6.5 HP mower with Tecumseh engine (model 20007) wouldn't start. Fresh gas wasn't enough. After watching this video, felt comfortable attempting maintenance myself. Home Depot has Toro kit (Model 20236) with new air filter, spark plug, engine oil, and gas stabilizer for $15.44. Also bought can of carburetor spray. Came home, and in less than an hour had the machine apart and back together. Video correctly identified all the parts, tools, and steps needed. Worked on the first pull!

  • @castlehaven86 good job man!

  • Great Video! I have the same lawn mower and using it for the first time this year. It took me a while to get it started and it ran for half an hour then it stopped. Turned out to be low on engine oil but I put too much oil and white smoke started to come out, when the lawn mower stopped. I waited for engine to cool to remove the excess oil but then I started seeing gas leaking from carburetor, any idea as of how to go about fixing it?

  • @terpfan2006 follow the instructions in the video and u may need to replace kit #631021b

  • This video is GREAT! It inspired me to clean my carb and my mower, which wouldn't start, runs better than new. Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video!!

  • Thank you for posting such a great video. I have the same Lawnmower. I couldn't get it to start and followed every single step, I had to refer to the video a couple of times to put it all back together but it fire right on the first try. Thanks a lot. :)

  • Thank you!! Did my yearly tune up on my lawn mower started up the 2nd pull, when it stopped gas started coming thru air filter. Tryed to start again and it won't start. Took the carburetor apart like the video said put it back together and it runs like it did when i first bought it. Had a old mower did the same thing two different times and each time it was a $100. Thank You!!

  • Any suggestions for where to get parts? (I need a new bowl, oring, and that screw).

  • @shawnharper go to a small engine shop or ebay

  • smoke just comes out the muffler non-stop ...any solution?

  • @mrmex85 was it put away tilted up? run it for a while, may clear itself unless it is overfilled with oil

  • WOW! Great video! Fixed my mower thanks to this video. Replaced oil, spark plug, carb bowl, carb O-Ring, primer bulb, and the air filter. My 5 year old Toro Tecumseh runs great now.

Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video.

  • I was having issues so I tore down my toro as you showed. I got it back running, but now there's a very high idle speed that I can't control. Any thoughts? It makes the mower at least twice as loud as normal and burns through gas twice as fast.

  • thanks alot for this video. i fixed my toro 6.5hp lawnnmower, just like this one in the video. i have a few problems with the wire linkages near the carburator, i forgot to mark it before I dismantled it. The engine worked once I put the wire linkages back in the right spot.

  • THANK YOU! I've read a dozen websites but your video was the thing that finally enabled me to fix my mower. It really helps when you're cleaning the bolt in the carburetor bowl to be able to see where the holes are supposed to be.

  • @BZQN tell your friends about my videos, take care

  • Great Video. Thanks so much. Great detail, camera work, and editing. You the man.

  • @BrainSwell thanks man, make sure to subscribe if you haven't already

  • I've got the same mower that's been sitting a year in the shed. I use it as a trim mower and it runs like crap. I'll try this. Wish me luck...

Thanks for a great video. Fav'd and sub'd

    Have a great weekend brother.

  • @Garagesaleohmy it should work

  • @Garagesaleohmy thanks dude!

  • Looks like my lawnboy insight

  • Can I replace a carburator with a differnt one even if the one that is on the machine is one of the ajustable jets and the replacement carb has a fixed jet?

  • @lawnguy27 yes as long as all the linkages fit

  • @donyboy73 ok thanks ill try that

  • I like your videos. Very helpful for me as well. I recently picked up a used yardbug by Yardman. I like those as they are small vs a lawn tractor but, they can be very difficult to work on. If you ever work on them please do a video on how to change belts on those. This will help many of us. Thanks.

  • when you take the bowl off, hold the carb the right way up, this is so some of whats in the bowl stays in the bowl so you can see if their is any water in it

  • one walch plug is missing inside the carb, did u see that?

  • Extremely well made and very informative. Thanks for the video.

  • awesome

  • GREAT VIDEO- My lawnmower would not start......I took off the carborator, easy.

Try just taking off the bottom nit under the cup and put a needle through the 3 little holes. You do not have to take the whole thing off.

After I poked through the center whole......my lawnmower runs STRONG.

  • Extremely helfpul video! Thanks for taking time to share this to all of us. It gave me the confidence to disassemble the carb, through your step-by step, detailed process, know what to look for and how to clean it. It did the job. My mower would start but stop running in just seconds. With your video, I was able to disassemble, clean, and reassemble with no problems...I will be watching all your videos...Again, thanks a million!

  • saved me a repair bill thanks!

  • this video saved me a $50 repair bill

  • THIS VIDEO IS SOOO HELPFUL!!!!!!!!!! It helped me remove my carberatour bowl and even it "showed" me how to put the float needle pin back on. VERY good video. Better than anyone you'll ever see. VERY detailed.

  • @littleelvisofMA thanks, tell ur friends

  • How do you get to the belt?

  • These late model Tecumsehs have a very poorly designed piston oiling system, and used a silkscreened piston coating instead of the industry standard chrome plating. It's just a matter of time before the piston and cylinder start to gall and the engine will fail. All Tecumseh LEV (Low Emission Vertical) series engines have this problem.

  • @meccaturbo thanks for the info

  • @donyboy73 Love your videos, keep up the good work! I was corresponding with Tecumseh just before they went out of business, about the LEV engine problems, and they sent me a letter explaining the engine failures they were having due to the silkscreened piston coating that was failing- that's the only reason I found out about it, I'd never heard of such a problem before.

  • @meccaturbo is there any i can get a copy of that letter?

  • @donyboy73 Let me see if I can scan it and somehow send it to you.

  • @meccaturbo thanks

  • I have a similar mower that the front wheel drive is not working. how would you trouble shoot and or fix that ?

  • @gamecocks56 check the belt

  • wat kinda ratchet is that

  • where can i get a fuel hose that runs from the bottom of the gas tank to the carb. the one it had ripped ,the lawnmower had been sitting for about a year and a half .

  • @RubenLeal722 go to a small engine shop or an automotive store, i use 1/4" inside diameter line for those mowers

  • a paper clip works on some of the jets, instead of using a wire.

  • When i serviced this mower i couldnt get the bolts off it do they sometimes lock them on?

  • I fixed one of these for my neighbor, cleaned out the carb and it was full of water so i cleaned it and put in new gas. Gave it back to the guy and it ran great, so then he stored it right in the open and it rained. He had a shed but it was full i think he could of covered the engine though. So he called me back a week later and the same thing. I think he learned the second time though. Just cleaned out the bowl the second time.

    Easy money!!!!

Thanks for the great videos dony they help a lot

  • hi there..i was wondering if u wood b able 2 help me..i have a drift 2 go kart with a 6.5hp engine..it was going well till 2day its something 2 do with the choke i think when its fully open it cuts of and when its fully closed it does not run very fast is it the choke or something else..i hope u can help as i love messing about on it.thanks 4 your time..

  • @clubn9 sounds like a dirty carb

  • Thanks donyboy. You're the MAN. I'm back in biz!

  • GREAT!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

  • Awesome video, and the best part is that I have the same lawn mower. by any chance dont you have a honda 5.5 model gc-160 that you need to tune up as well? lol... great video man..

  • thanks for the great video. my mower is working again. i think the pin holes in the nut were plugged.

  • great video! i followed your instructions and got my mower going again. i believe the pin holes in the nut were clogged. thanks!

  • I just wanted to let u know that your videos are an order of magnatude better than any that I have seen on you tube!

  • @snaponjohn100 thank you very much

  • @snaponjohn100 I agree 100%

  • Awesome video. Addresses a lot of key point. This video is a better alternative than taking somewhere and waiting and waiting!

  • great info dude love your vids. if you get a kohler in ...id love to see that one

  • hey my grandpa had the same mower and it chucked a rod and wasnt really old either, all well. also what is the model and code for the engine? cause im using that carb. on my briggs 5hp engine, and funnything is it fits perfectly, also don't know if you know, but that engine also has a oil pump built on the cam, pumps oil to the valves and the piston, but i couldn't find any oil channels going to the rod, so i think my grandpa's rod was getting no oil or barely any oil.

  • hey my grandpa had the same mower and it chucked a rod and wasnt really old either, all well.

  • Thank you.

  • Pretty usefull...thank you donyboy73...

  • can you do a self propelled mower belt change on the transmission please?

  • @Smallgasengine1 i sure will, keep watching

  • My brother has one of these, except his is a personal pace mower. Same engine. But his needs a tune up. Lol great video man thumbs up !

  • @1972FordF150 i have the personal pace for my own use. same engine as this one and rear wheel drive

  • @donyboy73 Cool dude !

  • Good Job dude enjoy your weekend .

  • @VE9REJ thanks
