Governments and companies "can" take steps to protect the vulnerable power grid and communications technologies. But they actually haven't... and the time remaining in this solar maximum (until sometime in the late winter of 2014 when such X-class flares and dangerous CME's are no longer a crippling danger) is short.
Having not responded to the warnings when there was still time to protect valuable assets, there is not now time to protect effectively. So the strategy now is wishful thinking.
I dont understand how these knock out power grids on earth. If they dont harm biological life, how do they knock out power? Is it a magnetic deal?
