  • 1:25 "Na ru hou do-oo", best part.

  • 0:45 MAGIC! :3

  • Watashi no nama-e wa...

  • I laughed so hard!! What anime is this from?

  • Wow, her accent sounds real. :O

  • Yet I still have no idea what's she's saying.... I would probably sound way worse than this.

  • Kimochi des Yoow.

  • 0:36

  • Can someone explain what she is writing? Is she using the wrong kanji?

  • @RapidEyesCream

Yeah, more or less. It's a little hard to explain without going into detail but I guess it's easiest to say she's just using them wrong. Or extremely wrong, as in "Now die". The way she wrote her name would translate into "knitting wool", her "Asou" is really read as "Akusa", etc etc

  • KOCHI GA A GRILL

  • SOU

    NAN

    DESS

    KARR

  • lol it's like a foreigner born in the US but raised in Japan XD

  • @RagnaFan555 : I mean patricia martin.

  • naruHODOOOOO

  • Kate's by far the most convincing foreigner I've seen in an anime (and I thought they had a native english speaker do the voice too.)

Worst has got to be Patty from Lucky Star. She can't even say her own name correctly!

  • LOL HER ACCENT SO NAN DESKARRRR

  • Kochi ga a grill

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha *sigh Kate is my favourite Sketchbook character

  • desu nay and deskurr?

  • 2:30 Flowers I choose you!

  • I like her MUSTARD at 0:17

  • Sownen deskar!!! .. I wish I knew the tongue twister so I could try it :)

  • @BLACKSNIPER99 Spanglish in my opinion.. Japanenglish cracks me up, but Spanglish just kind of annoys me.. My opinion :)

  • -.-'.............eeeeeeehhhhh....... bueno........ ¿Cómo puedo decir esto de una manera más respetuosa modo? *thinks*

I can't tell which is worse now Spanglish or Japaneglish? it's really hard for me to choose.

  • It's actually kind of sad when you consider that Kate's cat speaks English better than she does.

  • 1:08 Oh, Kaneda, Our home and native...

  • THE ONLY ANIME CHARACTER TO SOUND LIKE AN AMERICAN AND SHE'S CANADIAN

  • Q: Why didn't they get a native English speaker? // A: That would have been too convenient.

  • @GerkIIDX

not to mention that the sorts of native english speakers who would be able to pull off the sort of accent they want probably dont know how to actualy read japanese, and only know stereotypical phases (i.e. the worst of the weeaboos). Also, you would need to find one that has permission to work in japan.

  • This is every weeaboo's dream.

  • ...fuck...

  • ROFL

  • MAGIKUU HIIROO SHIMAASSU.

  • lol Yuko Goto's accent is spot on! When I was taking Japanese, a lot of my class mates sounded very much like this.

  • @StarDr0ps you probably did too

  • @dhead22: The only thing I was really bad at was changing the r's to an l sound otherwise, It definitely wasn't this bad.

  • Her Japanese kinda reminds me of Jodie-Sensei from Detective Conan....

  • Now I see people like Mikuru or Avril with this sort of accent, and it hurts.

    It hurts badly.

I swear, Yuko Goto can do anything, can't she?

  • 話すing 日本glish.

    hanasuing nihonglish.

  • Japane.....grish!

  • This is what I sound like .___.

And I'm from Canada too! :D

  • lmao i'm still learning so i'm not very good at jpns yet but that is one bad accent! i wanna watch this show now, fo sho

  • And fuck she's from Canada? GOOD LORD, WHERE'S THE MOE?

    actually this kinda cute...

  • ...H-Have I just been violated? I really can't tell..

  • I feel insulted.

  • Finally, someone who actually sounds like a fucking foreigner. Why do we have to deal with frighteningly bad Engrish when we have perfectly capable voice actors like this?

  • interestingly, she can say "onii-sama" almost perfectly.

  • There's this sick part of me that wants a company to do an english dub of this show, just to see what they would do with Kate.

  • My heart can only take so much.

  • I don't really find this offensive, unless they had stern motives to promote racism and such, I think they are just poking a little fun at someone who first learns a language. Of course its gonna be akward, and I think thats what they are trying to display with this character. At least she still has friends lol.

  • What the... It sounds liked the language in Magicka!

  • @lacerchia

    She's Canadian

  • @lacerchia No it doesn't. And you sound unbelievable thin skinned to say that. Get out int he real world.

  • 0:02

    Is that you Ness?

  • Okay, I'm from Canada, and I'm learning Japanese...I still find myself talking like this.

    "OTL desKURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • That R sound really messes me up.

  • Do they really think Westerners say "Oh!" that much?

  • a Japanese voice actor trying to play a North American English speaker trying to speak Japanese, this concept makes me giddy.

  • @Superhrnet01 *head asplode*

  • @Superhrnet01 That concept is the same as a native english speaker, sounding like an Oriental person failing at English, also known as "Engrish" so.. not that complex. ;P

  • @Superhrnet01 Yo dawg, I heard you like foreigners, so I told a Japanese speaker to imitate a North American English speaker imitating a Japanese speaker so you can hear accents while you hear accents.

  • SOWNNAN DESKURRR made me watch this show.

  • HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG

  • magic!

  • HNNNNNNNGGGG

  • Keemochee des Yooooooo

  • It's okay, Kate! I can't speak Japanese very well either! XD

  • I loved the reaction to the bad Japanese at 0:13. I also have to give a lot of credit to the Japanese VA, it must have been really hard to pull off such a believable performance as a foreigner speaking downright wretched broken Japanese. Both th e character and the voice actress are awsome!

  • SOU NAN DESS KAR?

  • yeah, good video!!

  • It's annoying and cute at the same time.

  • Comment removed

  • How much is this truth in television? If/When I start learning Japanese being Canadian myself am I likely to sound like this?

  • This is the closest I've ever heard a native Japanese speaker get to impersonating a non-native speaker. A valiant effort save for the "desu-karr." That really makes no sense to me, like you wouldn't add that sound to it if it just ends in a vowel. Pretty damn close though.

  • TONARINOKA T-TONARINOKAKU KIKYURKYA YOKURIKAKIKRUKA YAW HUUUURRR

    Can't stop laughing.

  • As someone who has tutored non-native English speakers, believe me when I say that strong accents can be surprisingly hard to shake, even for people who have lived among native speakers for years.

  • omg, this is fucking awesome!!!!!!! XD Soh-nen desukurrr!

  • weeaboo

  • dat fucking DESKURRR

  • I miss this show... XD

  • "Kanji nanu wa kimowchi dess yow"

    ROOOOFL.

  • reminds me of minda

  • Featured on TV Tropes! =D

  • There is NO WAY she could have an accent that atrocious. She must have learned entirely from books. Still, how could her accent STAY that bad while living in Japan and hearing native Japanese speakers?

  • @Sayoi In the same manner if you went to a university here and talked to the grad students they all have extremely strong accents? To be fair, most people don't sound THAT bad (...most), but even in an immersive environment people will maintain very strong accents because it's very hard to overcome the differences. For instance, R and L are allophonic in Japanese, so certain R-words have a strong L flavour and certain L-words have a strong R flavour to them when pronounced by immersed Japanese.

  • @Sayoi

    . . . Well, because it's funny. :x

  • @Sayoi Actually, Kate explicitly states she doesn't like the idea of learning a language through only textbooks, saying you don't learn anything practical from them. At least she says that in one of the comic strips, in a oddly random tirade she just kinda slips into and confuses everyone around her with. That being said, it makes her comically thick accent and extremely broken speaking that much more hilarious.

  • At least they finally got a voice actor that sounds like they don't have a Japanese accent for once.

  • squid girl had something similar [if a bit exagerated] with its 3 MIT scientists. [mentioning the MIT is important]

but they werent cute in their execution like we have here :3

  • SOW NAWN DESK CARRR

  • DESS YO!

  • Why do they portray us canadians as blonde and blue eyed all the time....*looks in mirror*...oh...that's why :(

  • SAW NUN DESK CARL

  • I like this.

  • finally an authentic English to Japanese speech in an anime and that is acceptable but it could be annoying to some people XD

  • Did this same voice actress also do Hikari from Special A?

  • @coolcatjas Yup.

  • 2:00 is fucking adorable

  • BIRTHDAY PRESENT DESS NAY

  • What's the episode where she's 1st introduced?

  • I am completely in love with her at 1:25.

    <3 <3 <3 <3

  • @MasterChibi

"I am completely in love with her at 1:25"

That whole scene is hilarious. It's definitely one onf my favorite scenes in anime.

    And I saw her first!

  • KANADA

  • NARAE HODOHH

  • i don't get it....

  • Hahahahahahahahahaaaa! I wonder how much the voice actor was paid?.....

  • Damnit, and I was thinking about watching this show. She's loud and won't stop talking again. What is wrong with these people? Have the writers ever actually met a foreigner?

  • 1:58 sounds like she sayd kitkat

  • LOL I'm working really hard to not have an accent like that AHAHAHAHA

    but it was adorable ahahaha

  • is she retarded or something?

  • KA NE DAAAA~

Feels good to be Canadian XD

  • My sis should watch this.

  • 0:25 Kochiga to me SUICIDE, kochiga AQUAREL <3

  • lol

seriously, is this really what they think canadians sound like in japanese? not from canada btw but it still is really stupid (and unbearably funny)

  • @pokeroro

She sounds like an American, as in she has that stereotypical white settler girl accent (as in wagon trains settling the Great Plains/steppe regions in the Midwestern United States). That, or an Oklahoma/Texas accent which is similar

  • @Warsie well they do say in the anime that she is indeed from Canada, I guess the japanese could possibly think that she would have the same accent as someone from the mid-west area. To tell the truth, I cant tell what her accent is and if it weren't for the fact they say she's a foreigner, I'd prolly think she's just mentally handicapped.

  • @pokeroro

So basically she's from the Canadian prarie provinces. Explains it.

  • @Warsie

This, coming from someone who spells "prairie" incorrectly.

  • @ruthampton

    lol

  • なぜですかRRR

  • tv tropes I blame you for my being here... and my wanting to watch this series -_-

  • @Animegunnerchick Wow it got you too? XD Exact same way I found this anime and I watched the whole thing. It's really good.

  • @Animegunnerchick

    sup fellow troper

  • lol.. kate made this anime 10x better xDD lol'd at the accent

  • Hey, what do you know, the voice actress actually tried putting on an accent!

  • They paid her potatoes to speak like this :)

  • Ha, she's from 金田 (Field of golden rice?). I am from 雨里賀 (Rainy land celebration!)

  • SO NAN DESS CURR

  • I love 1:53 ENGRISH rules lol

  • Whats all this aboot.

  • 1:10

    Kanerdaa~r

  • I love this video

  • SOWNEN DESKURRRRRRRRRRRR

  • interesting, usualy toungue twisters are easier if it is in a language that is not one's native language (mostly because if you know what it sounds like, it is easier to copy as you arent getting caught up saying similar words like it is trying to get you to say)

  • Fuck yeah Yuko Goto.

  • sownan deskurrr

  • Sounds like half the otaku friends I know....*sigh*

  • kimochi desuyoo~

  • sou nan des karr

  • sonandesdurrr

  • hurrrrdurrrr

  • i wish this was english!!!!!!

  • I have friends that attempt to speak Japanese, but it'll usually sound like this, so this accent is very accurate.

  • SONANDESKURRRRR!

  • So, going from this video alone, it's about a hyper American girl that goes to Japan to speak horrible/learn Japanese, and must write down the Kanji she means due to her accent being completely uncomprehensible?

  • @ComedicShinigami I haven't seen the series, but from what other people describe, Kate doesn't even come into the series until episode 8, and she is not the main character.

  • @ComedicShinigami

Actually, she's Canadian, but she's just a side character. The series focuses on Kajiwara Sora, a quiet reserved Japanese girl. She actually resorts to writing kanji because she's extremely shy. xD

Slice of life type manga while we follow Sora and the gang around as they do completely normal but amusing art club activities... and some other stuff too.

  • I feel I must repeat.

    WARAU HIGE NO HITO

  • The only character in any anime who actually sounds like an American... and she's Canadian.

  • @NecroZombieT38 Canadians don't sound that different anyway.

  • @NecroZombieT38 I dunno. When she does speak English-it's totally off.
