I think there are people who truly need anti-depressants and you are talking about a few popular cases that made the mainstream media news. Not only are they used for depression, but are used for neuropathy and for pain. The newer ones like Cymbalta act differently on the neurotransmitters than ones in the past. In my career, I only saw positive changes.
Traci Johnson, a 19 year old healthy volunteer with no recent history of depression, committed suicide by hanging while testing Lilly's drug, Cymbalta (duloxetine), at Lilly's Laboratory for Clinical Research. Cymbalta is most closely related to Wyeth's SSNRI Effexor (venlafaxine) In previous Cymbalta trials, four other individuals committed suicide.
I always love when they say a "side effect" might be death.
To me, side effects would be more like: runny nose, craving Eskimo pies and mutton together, or wanting to watch "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers while sitting naked on a Slip-N-Slide, but that could just be me...
