Billy is clearly comfortable enough with his sexuality (not that he has much of one yet, though) to be friends with a boy who is gay and likes to try on his sister's dresses, so obviously he's okay with being affectionate toward Michael, who he knows loves him and is heartbroken that he's leaving. I think Billy was straight.

from the vue of Michael this was a love story and Eliot would have been happy to reply on this love if he have had the same orientation, however the best part surely making my heart burst is Eliot´s electric feeling towords the dance. I'm sorry but This wasn't a love story. They're 11, it's only a subplot, and Billy was straight. While Michael had a crush on Billy, it was only mutually platonic. The point of the subplot was Billy wasn't gay, illustrating the bittersweet reality of gay first crushes. This was not a love story.
It annoys me how so many ppl are only concentrating on the fact that Michael has a crush/is in in love with Billy, and thus think this is a movie about some gay relationship or love story (and this video is a perfect example). Sure, the main point of the movie is not that Michael was in love with Billy, but it was still very touching, and it certainly moved me. His love for him was so sweet and pure. He loved him for everything that he was, and that's what the video shows. There are other important parts: this video only portrays one.

I had to watch this back in college, we all (the class and two professors) came to a diifferent conclusion than you. but, your comment does intrigue me. I intend to rewatch the movie when i find the leisure.
I've only seen the broadway version of this, not the movie, but in the stage version I actually think it leaves the whole Billy and Michael thing pretty open ended to be interpreted however you want. No one who wrote the show has ever said either way.

As far as I understood it, the question of sexuality was brought up because in a situation such as that, it's not something you can ignore. However, it was never actually answered, because in the end, it doesn't matter whether Billy is straight or not.
Its left open for the watcher to decide. Personally, I like to think that he is, just because it improves the movie for me thinking that the kiss at the end was past just friendly, but that's just me.

At the end of the movie you find that his friend is gay, but Billy's sexuality is left undisclosed in the movie to help make the point that it was not relevant to his wanting, or being able to dance. His Father in the movie tried to keep him from dancing in the beginning because he thought was something only gay men did, but the movie tries to dispel that notion, and remind us that anyone who wants to dance should be able to without being judged.
Michael is gay-Billy is not as he states himself he's 'not a pouf' just because he likes the ballet. The director wanted it clear that you don't 'have to be gay' or turn gay just because your into that dance form.
I have to watch this movie 4 enlgish....its an ok move and has some good parts.....but i dont see it as a dancing movie...the dancing is pretty average....but its ok..
Billy's not gay - thats partly the whole point of the film, its trying to put across the stigma of a boy who wants to dance and the fact that in that time and place you would have been seen to be gay even if you weren't.
However, the story line surrounding his friend is so beautiful and it always makes me cry, because its not only about his sexuality but also his gender expression and the transgender struggle in young people is so often forgotten, amazing film!
I think that Billy's interest in ballet had nothing to do with his sexuality. His friend Micheal was most obviously gay and for all practical perposes, a flamer. However i dont think that Billy is for sure strait. I think that he plays a sort of confused role in this movie, society wouldnt aprove of him being gay but seriously, the way he interacts with Micheal, very gay. That confusion could be part of his anger as well. Its just my opinion though. An absolutly wounderfully done film though!!!

As far as I understood it, the question of sexuality was brought up because in a situation such as that, it's not something you can ignore. However, it was never actually answered, because in the end, it doesn't matter whether Billy is straight or not.

Its left open for the watcher to decide. Personally, I like to think that he is, just because it improves the movie for me thinking that the kiss at the end was past just friendly, but that's just me.

i just saw it, and god damn i cryed. the movie is so tuching, but i think as he is 11 years old there should actually been more senes with hes gay friend. i think when you are so young friends are the ones you trust, more than anyone lese, and i want to see his life between his age of 11 and age of 25, how it will turn out with him and michael and so on. I wonder how it would go if he did not go, is he gay? how does he like royal ballet school? this should be a tv thing, with episodes.

I never figured it out in the movie cause like first micheak kisses billy on thwe cheek and then hes like im not gay even though im doing ballet and then billy kisses micheal on the cheek before he leaves the ballet school and yea, so i was confused. hahahha:]

i'm astouded people watch this movie and question or assume that Billy is GAY!He is not gay...a point underlined in the film by including Michael..even if he was, so what???but he isn't...the film makers did'nt want a cliche...some people see one anyway..

At the end of the movie you find that his friend is gay, but Billy's sexuality is left undisclosed in the movie to help make the point that it was not relevant to his wanting, or being able to dance. His Father in the movie tried to keep him from dancing in the beginning because he thought was something only gay men did, but the movie tries to dispel that notion, and remind us that anyone who wants to dance should be able to without being judged.

Michael is gay-Billy is not as he states himself he's 'not a pouf' just because he likes the ballet. The director wanted it clear that you don't 'have to be gay' or turn gay just because your into that dance form.

I have to watch this movie 4 enlgish....its an ok move and has some good parts.....but i dont see it as a dancing movie...the dancing is pretty average....but its ok..

Billy's not gay - thats partly the whole point of the film, its trying to put across the stigma of a boy who wants to dance and the fact that in that time and place you would have been seen to be gay even if you weren't.
However, the story line surrounding his friend is so beautiful and it always makes me cry, because its not only about his sexuality but also his gender expression and the transgender struggle in young people is so often forgotten, amazing film!

I think that Billy's interest in ballet had nothing to do with his sexuality. His friend Micheal was most obviously gay and for all practical perposes, a flamer. However i dont think that Billy is for sure strait. I think that he plays a sort of confused role in this movie, society wouldnt aprove of him being gay but seriously, the way he interacts with Micheal, very gay. That confusion could be part of his anger as well. Its just my opinion though. An absolutly wounderfully done film though!!!
