  • This is so cool. We had one of these (My dad hooked it up in the Living Room) when I was a kid - like early 60's. I think it's the exact same model. They would install them at a Cities Service Gas Station in Flint Mich,

  • Nice thing.

  • Kind of like turning an lp into an 8 track lol! Very neat unit!

  • Hi I got one of those.I was wondering how much you paid for yours.I have just cleaned it up and later tonight I will try it out on my stereo.Noware do you mention thats its mono or at least mine is.

  • Well the crystal cartage is bad on mine.Everything else works great. Its down to the basement for this unit.

  • With all its negatives... that's still quite a sound coming off of that 45! Thank Motown & their engineers for that, I'm sure.

  • did those things play albums? I don't remember ever having one of those, much less seeing one! It was right up there with the digital tracking arm on some of yesterdays record players, wasn't it?

  • No, they play at 45 RPM only. See the users part two for the inside of this lovely machine.

  • keep your fingers off the grooves of those old45's, please! Thanx!! One of MY pet peeves!

  • I also have that 45..love it!

  • Nice Slide-O-Matic XM! I have one with the built in amplifier/radio. Tell me, is that the original crystal cartridge/stylus combination?

If so, I'm surprised that it still is providing output to your amplifier.

  • Thanks! Yes, that is the original cart/stylus working, but not very high quality sound coming out. The output was rather low, I ran it through my preamp. Thanks for watching.

  • This Record Players Pickup Is Wierd Beacuse By 1955,Most Record Players Either Had Sappire Or Diamond Semi-Permanent needles

  • Yes, this particular one had a 'crystal' cartridge, with a stylus that looked like a bent straight pin. As with most crystal carts from the 50's, it was about dead, so I crudely fitted a replacement (ceramic) cartridge to see if the unit would still let me slide the records in and out without hitting the stylus. The cart I used was from an 80's cheap stereo. This particular video was made with the original cartridge, though.

  • WOW what a find. years ago there was the Country Music Store and my grandad took me there all the time, they had this SAME player I remember being fascinated by it. RCA Victor also made the stackable 45rpm player for cars! Have you seen one of those! They are similar to the 'highway hi-fi' but actually played a stack of 45's, very short lived, LOL. Can't wait to see the guts of this; by all means change out that cartridge! five *****'s bud...

  • My uncle had a radio/tv store in the 50's and he gave me a player that automatically played when you closed the door. I LOVED it. Do you suppose it was the Philco?

Does anybody have a photo or video of the Philco?

  • Cool video! I have one just like that and another on the way.

It's remarkable it works at all, the old crystal cartridges are usually dead in these things though I see you were using a pre-amp so it's probably weak.

I put one of William Boscos low rider cartridges in mine, it works well but the needle is a bit too exposed for a slot player and I'm afraid it'll get broken sliding a record in.

  • nice set! i have 2 of the rca victor 45 rpm record changer attachments. i've restored them all.

  • That's a very interesting machine...haven't seen one like this by RCA but I have seen a Philco where you slide the record in and it plays automatically. You probably can retrofit a modern magnetic or ceramic cartridge in there which will be easier on the records.
