I think Zappa was just plain autistic. Ted was high. His music in the 1980s and onwards sounds like it was made by a straight guy, in the 1960s and 70s he sounds like a druggie. A lot of guys who make the most noise about "not doing stuff " like steroids in baseball etc... are the worst offenders.

Yup that's Dave. I miss the old WABX - a true undergound radio station - and later of Detroit's PBS radio.
He also wrote some pretty good music.
And as for the comments above on Ted being high/stoned I don't believe so. Ted is/was as conservative as it gets. He makes Ronald Regan look like a red commie pinko.
