Light coloratura soprano voices can hang on a high E effortlessly... when young. But heavier roles can take their toll. Violetta is not a dramatic role, but it is not for voices like Dessay's in my opinion. All but the most lyric roles are rough on voices that don't have much natural size or weight. Dessay's voice is too light for Violetta, or any Verdi, and it risky to continue singing these roles.
I like the way Natalie tries to act, not just so sing. This is my first time to feel like crying hearing this song, and that must be how Violetta was feeling in the act.
@proopsforpresident Completely agree. I saw the last performance, and she overacted terribly to hide the vocal problems. Her voice even at it's best wouldn't suit Violetta, but in poor shape in which it is actually... I pity people who have paid 240 eruros to hear her!
I saw this performance yesterday. All the cast was great, particularly Charles Castronovo (Alfredo) the tenor. The staging was ... well ... interesting. The only problem was ... Nathalie Dessay. Not only her voice is definitely not for Traviata but she acted way too much "hysterical". Traviata is not "Orpheus in the underworld"...
Penosi. Dessay devi ritirarti la voce è sfibrata completamente

Dessay has a way of taking the listener on a journey to feel what she is feeling.
I want to scream when I hear her scream.

It's such a pity that her voice is in decline because she is such a great overall performer.
