My oldest has Aspergers. She is very smart but her grades were suffering in PS because other kids teased her to the point she could not concentrate. The homeschooled people I know (from multiple families) were homeschooled through primary education then came to state school for secondary (this is in the British system) and they started off a little socially challenged, yes. But in a few years they were just like everyone else. But the thing is: They were ALWAYS more intelligent than the vast number of people.

I decided to work on homeschooling my kids. My son broke his arm could not write fast enough for his teacher and got bad grades. The school defends that its ok for them to fail my son for things that he could not controll. If public school is so great then why does shit like this go on? I was home schooled from K-8, and I am very thankful for that!!! I have come out of it with a very good understanding of the English language, history, sociology, psychology, and creativity! I had a few friends who went into the public school system (around 2nd or 3rd grade) who had tons of potential that couldn't be met by the curriculum, even with high GPA. It showed later in life, especially when it came to drugs and peer pressure - something I never had until I went to public high school.

Home schoolers have a better chance of staying away from drugs if their parents or family members are away from them. If your homeschooled you are safe from teachers that put an "F" on your grade you are free from Grades all together. You can learn more when you are not underneath the thumb of a teacher.

I am a homeschooling parent who was a public school teacher for 8 years. Homeschoolers are much more socially adept than most public school children. They learn social skills and manners from those who have a vested interest in them. Where as in public school, children learn manners and social "skills" from children their own age--who obviously are not socially exceptional.

Being a mother is a position of high honor..and you are taking away power from women and mothers with statements as these.

What's so offensive about the family unit, children being around their mother and father? HS children are being taught about the importance of family, of loving & putting others 1st. Many hs children are better spoken than their public school counterparts, more polite, & have higher test scores. I think this is simply a case of not understanding the subject that's being discussed. Perhaps a better term for homeschooling would be parent directed education. Trust me, the kids don't sit around at home never going out to meet other people. Children educated by their parents actually have more opportunity to interact with children and adults of ALL ages - not just their own peer group limited by age and often by socioeconomic background. They also have a chance to concentrate on a specific interest more deeply- I know one who is working on their PhD in physics before age 25.

I went to a public school. But I've got to say that homeschooled kids are some of the classiest, most cultured, most enlightened people I know.

Homeschooling can be done the wrong way, but it has been my experience to witness that more often public schooling is done the wrong way.

Behar is merely showing her fear and intolerance toward that which she does not understand.

I would like to meet all of these "demented" homeschoolers that she knows. I homeschooled my 3 sons. The oldest started in 4th grade. He is now married with a 7 month old son and is an RN at West Florida Hospital. The 2nd is also married and works for MEDCO, the mail order pharmaceudical company and son #3 is 17, just received his GED and will start college in January. Over the years we have met 100's of homeschoolers and I can only recall 1 demented one. :)

The statements of Ms. Behar are biased, demeaning, and not backed up by the majority of home-schoolers.
