This is sad: Terry Jones is the Lord Ha Ha of modern days; those who used to enjoy Monty Python cannot but be disappointed; why is he taking side with evil and oppression and religious intolerance and assassins?? AND bad-mouthing the Crusaders calling them brigands and barbarians, etc...He ought to read history books before spewing forth rubbish and lies about the Western Civilization that allowed him the freedom of speech 2 make this documentary!!!

because its true...read a history books , crusaders were bunch of barbarians and murderers . middle east in those time was a centar of human knowledge . In Baghdad the philosophers were talking about the nature of atoms. And in the same time on the west , 99% of people couldn't even read or take a bath. Western civilization was born after the crusades and the knowledge they took from the Byzantines , Arabs and Jews. They killed everybody on their path.

@Panzer4183 That's an oddly revisionist view of "western civilisation," seeing as "western civilisation" has an unbroken history going back to pretty much the Ancient Greeks if not before. Every civilisation has dark periods, even the Byzantine Greeks, Arabs and Jews. The Dark Ages were dire, but the West is not defined by the Crusades.

Well there is no original western civilization before Renaissance. And i also agree the crusades didnt define the west civilization, but they left its imprint. I agree that every civilization has it dark ages , but considering the story of crusaders , they were bunch of ignoring barbarians. its remarkable what happen when they return in Europe after the last war in holy land, and brought a knowledge from east. The Europe flourished.

They oppressed christians and jews everywhere they conquered lands; they forced anyone who was not muslim to pay taxes and exempted the muslim; at the same time they put pressure on who they called infidels to convert; those who didn' t were turned into serfs or expelled. And same was done by Christians to the pagans in Rome and Athene , after emperor Theodosius . Every philosopher school was closed , Alexandrian library was burned by Christians , because they didnt need more books they had a Bible(400 yars after that, muslims burned it from the same reason.) And muslims in Spain and Sicily payed taxes for praying. There are no good guys in this story, because its just a story from history.

@gs032009 Muslims on the other hand are obligated by their faith to pay a tax called "zakat". Taxes would be a misnomer because this is actually considered as a form of "institutionalised charity" paid to an institution called Bait al-Mal which literally means "the house of welfare". They are either paid in food or in gold, which is later channeled to the poor and needy. It's like medieval social benefits, if you like.

@gs032009 When the Muslims invaded a country or city, they did not kill their inhabitants, as the Christians did. Historical evidence records that the Muslim invaders continued to allow those people to practice their religions, continue free trade and did not seek to oppress, but to incorporate. The only evil I see evidence of, besides your ignorance, are the bloody and unjust atrocities committed by Christian and Catholic religions in the name of God.

@gs032009 Non-muslims or "zimmi"'s were subject to a tax called "jizyah" which makes them subject to the governing authority. This allows them to live freely and practice their faith under the protection of the Sultan's military muscle but exemptions were made for people who can't afford them.. A modern equivalent would be a residency visa.

If you've got a horde of franco-german zealots coming to burn down the city, you'd want to make sure you've paid your jizya lol.

@drtreg Isn't what so? Which local culture are you referring to...there are so many to choose from? "Culture's" are in a constant state of flux, some may suffocate slowly, other's more quickly, but they are always changing...for better, for worse? Who knows. However, they will continue to stand, fall, change, adapt or incorporate depending on the thoughts and actions of the people practicing them.
