Thanks for taking the time to make this slideshow and posting it. I am very happy with the results that I achieved with your method. I few notes........ the nasal bones did not come off but that's kind of a plus really. Also, I had my wife ask her stylist about the Claroxide and she just gave me a little to try but it said 30 on the bottle. The stylist said that the 30 and 40 were volumes but the stuff she gave me does not burn on contact with skin. Anyway, thanks again!
Just finished doing the boiling and the pressure wash. Worked awesome, great idea, most of the meat feel off on it's own. the rest will scrape right off with a fork. It was a great boil, 4 to 6 beers later!!! Why can't you just paint the skull white with spray paint? Wouldn't that work? Maybe I will try. Thanks again. Now I have two bear skulls to do!!!!
i used this technique yesterday worked perfect .. i used a cup of arm & hammer super washing soda it was a huge help completely eliminated the need for the power washer...
@WatchOutWorld08 apply every hour if you use the liquid . if you can buy the cream type 40 . wash and clean it it every 2 or 3 hours depending on how white you want the skull. the more you wash and clean then add the 40 , will get you a very white skull . but always wear rubber gloves and protect your eyes , just in case . and yes i am a taxidermist . brb just seen to hot women bow fishing in there bathing suits on youtube lol
@PrimitiveVsns The bottles may be different from different companies. The clear is ok, but you may have to use gauze to keep it on the skull. Use a turkey baster to refresh the gauze every hour or so. It's what I use to use and switched to cream because it's easier.
@michael82191 I think it is 30qt. The size really doesn't matter as long as you can completely submerge the skull. The 30qt. I use is really too big, but it's all i have and works good.
I've never had that problem with any that i have done. There shouldn't be any meat in the nasal cavity. You may not have gotten all the brain matter out. Also, how long did you wait to do it?
I just killed my first whitetail almost a week ago and I followed all these steps while I was out. unfortunately after cleaning and boiling there was still some meat in the nasal passage. I cleaned out the rest but now it smells. how can I fix this?
@gosuv25 No. I have done quite a few of them and have never had a problem with it. The skulls are pretty thick and i'm not putting the nozzle right against the skull. All you have to do is watch out for the nasal bones coming off, but thats it.
I like the way you presented this. Liked the music too! I have seen this done before, but not with the guaze. As a nurse, I got a chuckle out of that. Nice mount, thinking of doing this with my husbands kills this year.
I have made euros before but never this easy. Just used the power washer on two heads and boy was it easy. Now I have a new reason to use my power washer. Great Video many thanks!!
I have just tried this and it works exactly as described. Much easier than I thought it would be. Three tips:
1) Do the spraying out in a car wash. It works very well and eliminates cleaning brains off of your lawn.
2) If you boil the skull a bit longer, the bones that the nasal bones plug into will come off as well. This makes cleaning out the sinus cavities easier.
3) Your dog will probably love the "deer head soup" if you add it to their food (my neighbours did).
Thats a good job came very clean , had mine bleached ,TRICKS USE LIQUID PAPER TO CLEAN TEETH OR ANY PARTS THAT YOU WANT WHITER can`t tell the difference drys flat .
@kylemonkey Bleach weakens the bone. I have been down that road before. Also, it'll make the teeth fall out and you'll have to glue them back in. Not too good of an idea. It'll make it really white, but it wont last too long and it will get "powdery appearance". I have 2 that I have done with the bleach powder and didn't turn out too good. So, be careful.
Thank you so much for posting this video. FINALLY someone posted a video from start to finish that makes sense and works! Followed your directions, and mine looks great!
Great video and instruction!! I just did my first deer and it turned out great. I would suggest using a whitening poweder instead of gauze. Mix 40% peroxide gel with the powder and spread on like mayo. Also, take the pressure washer wand and let the spray hit the concrete at a 45 degree angle. Then put the skull in the stream with both hands. This reduces the spray impact and makes it much more managable.
Thank You...Many times Thank You. Over the years, I have created more than 10 European mounts and they have all involved hours of "picking." This year, I had four bucks that I needed to mount (son and I had a good year in two states)...I was really dreading the task. Bottom line, is I found your post and 4 hours of boiling and a trip to the car wash later...we are done and they look great...thanks! Your video saved us weeks of brain-numbing work.
is their a way to do this so the nasal bones dont come off? or are they just attached to the skull by catilage? Thanks! Btw your mount looks so BAD ASS!
@Bandanabandito1 Not really. I have done 3 that the nasal bones didn't come off, but if you slightly pull them, the come out. The joint where the bones attach is very small, and is barely attached by nature. Better safe than sorry and glue them in. It really isn't too big of a deal. It takes less than a minute.
The problem with boiling is the grease spots left in the skull You should add a degreasing step before the whiting, but it will be hard to do because the heat cooks the grease into the skull
@uncleharley1 The spots go away when the skull completely dries. Go to 9:30 and you'll see it on the one I did a few years ago. Also, you'll see that the spots have whitened on the one i did in the video. Their not grease spots.
I just finished up my Illinois head and followed these directions step by step. Thanks Doc it turned out awesome. I used a slab of walnut for my plaque. My wife and kids thinks it's the coolest mount that I now have. Thanks again (I like the whitened look better).
@71mundygreg Approximately 1/2 cup. I usually just pour it in and not really think about it. The amount isn't that important. Salt makes the water boiler hotter.
Hey doc I'm at the clairoxide 40 stage and it's not the paste, it's the liquid. I was hoping you could tell me how long I baste the skull for? I know you said to baste it every hour but I didn't catch how long I should do it for. Thanks for your time and the video, so far everything is going great!
This is by far the easiest way to make the skull mount. Thanks for sharing the knowlege. But never do like I did and do this about a week after the deer was killed the cooking smelt really really bad.
I've gotta be honest,I've been looking through some vids about mounting and this is by far the best I've seen and I has very impressed with the outcome. Great vid Doc.
No need to. When it completely dries, those spots disappears. You can see the one I did a few years ago on the right at 9:30. The spots disappear. It's not a grease spot.
@drdhdc00 was the horns dark on the bottom before you boiled it? im scared the horns are going to turn a different color if it is in the water alittle?
@mike12392: They were already dark. I like the chocolate color, so I don't lighten them. The color has always stayed the same whether the water hits them or not.
@mike12392: Double checking the video to make sure I tell you right, the color seemed to get a little darker when I boiled it. You can whiten them with the claroxide if you want them whiter. I never noticed it until now, but it's something I am going to start to do because I like the darker look.
I got a nice 6x6 elk in KY a couple weeks ago. I did the same thing to it except instead of salt, I added soda ash. You can buy it at any pool and spa store (about $10 US for five pounds). It made the tissue congeal and pull away from the skull much better than without. Also, I didn't use the pressure washer as I wanted to keep the nasal columns intact. With an elk it took half a 55 gallon drum on cinder blocks over charcoal grill.
No, you don't have to whiten it. I like it totally white. The burns are not bad, unless you leave the Claroxide on your skin for a good while. You'll feel it before it gets crazy. I worry more about getting in my eyes than on my skin.
You don't have do disinfect them either. The boiling will do it for you along with the Claroxide.

Yeah, you can do it however you like. This is the simplest way I have found. The sun will take a good bit of time and you have to worry about critters eating on the bone. Also, I like the hidden look that the anchors give. You can get them at Walmart for cheap.
you dont have to boil it so long it only takes 30 45 minutes to be able to clean the meat of and if you put the peroxide on it and stick it out in the sun for a day it will take the grease out of it
I found it just easier to take the meat off when I boiled it longer. Also, the brain turns to mush and easier to spray out.
The first mount I did I only boiled it for 2 hours and had a harder time cleaning it off. After trial an error, 4 hours was right for me. It all depends how much work you want to put in it. I also sun beached that one and found it in the neighbors yard the next day. Their dogs had a field day with it. I like to keep my trophies protected. Whatever works is good.
