I remember in the last winter Olympics when USA played Canada. I thought that was going to be my generations version of this. So close. Tied with less than a minute to go and then lost it in overtime. That was truly devastating.
I had to do a report on this. At 1:00, when Al Michael (ABC commentator) said, "Do you believe in miracles?!? YES!" It turns out those are the most famous words in sports history.
i wasnt born until 1986.. but sometimes when im down about the future of our country...I watch this and then im fired up and ready to go out and do whatever I can to change things and make things better...thank God I was born in the USA
I was 10 years old when I watched this happen and can remember the euphoria when the clock hit Zero.
Russia was an absolute sports powerhouse back then. If the US, or any country for that matter, wanted Gold, the chances were high that they would have to go through a Russian team to get it.
And if you beat the Russians, you knew you had a really good team.
@SPORTSLOGOSTV Is only Hockey... It meant a lot because it was on the era of the Cold War. so the meaning of winning over the soviet union at that time was huge.
@SPORTSLOGOSTV I give you that the Soviet had pros and we had Amateurs...(kids) playing for USA. But Hockey is played in a professional NHL level in less than 10 Countries... I mean compared to futbol (not Soccer) that is played and watched by more than 6 Billion people. :)
when canada beat the russians in '72, it was impressive; an all out war. but when the usa beat them in 80, it was incredible. canada had a difficult time beating them and they had nhl players on the roster... the usa had college kids. this was the most amazing moment in hockey history.
@07foxmulder - when canada beat the russians in '72, it was impressive; an all out war. but when the usa beat them in 80, it was incredible. canada had a difficult time beating them and they had nhl players on the roster"
Not only did Team Canada with roster full of best NHL players have a hard time beating USSR, but many times they didn't beat them, they lost and sometimes by a wide margin. No doubt, this was by far the biggest upset in hockey history, and top 3 of all time.
Seeing the "Miracle on Ice" made me think about other nations' version of it. For example, If I was Japanese I would consider the Japanese women's soccer team, a.k.a. Nadeshiko Japan, defeating Team USA at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup as Japan's version of it, since Nadeshiko Japan wasn't considered by a lot of people as winning the cup going in and Japan was at a low point, having suffered an earthquake and tsunami plus a nuclear disaster.
I was at the Bruins Stanley Cup winning game in May 1970. I was at Game 6 (and Game 7) of the 1975 World Series. I was at both the "Miracle on Ice" game and the Gold Medal winning game over Finland in February, 1980. And I was at Bobby Orr's retirement ceremony at the Boston Garden in January 1979.
I am privileged to have seen moments in sport that will transcend the ages and be spoken about for generations to come.
There may be better hockey played as was in the 1987 Canada Cup finals, but there will never be another game like USA-USSR. A group of college players beating a Russian team made up of professionals who had dominated NHL teams. Factor in the Cold War, and a game like this will never happen again.
@Acesn888s So true. It was much more then just an unlikely win by an underdog team. It is important to see it in the context of the times: the Russians had invaded Afghanistan, basically telling us to "kiss off". The Iranians had made hostages of our diplomats, there were lines at gas stations, the economy was tanking. People really been to believe that the U.S. was in decline. Then this happened.
Al Michaels "Do you believe in miracles ? YES " maybe the most famous sports call in the history of american sports. As sbroadcaster Michaels is TOP NOTCH and his calls in football, he is great. He is a GOLD MEDAL PERFORMER IN HIS OWN RIGHT !
I have just fished watching the Movie with Kurt Russell I remember here in Aussie how ecited we got.. Australia Boycotted the games.. Rayleen Boyle would have won gold...Could'nt go
@Love4SK I'm going to guess you're Canadian. That's funny, because the Boston Bruins (my team) beat the Vancouver Canucks (a Canadian team) in the Stanley Cup in June. Yes, we play hockey.
@shinkashank too bad the bruins didnt have any americans . sorry correction, they had 3, lol. they had a boat load of canadians though, guess thats why they won.
@shinkashank they play where they get paid. who cares what country the nhl team is in. But every 4 years we see what country they are true to ....the end result.... 2 golds for Canada in the last 8 years..... no gold for usa in 32 years.
@DavidCastoe i am sure not all bsbullies live in philly, the ones that do live there because they work there. mike myers etc. they always admit and know the saying " once a Canadian always a Canadian", And the greatest moment in Hockey was Canada/Russia 72. thats why Hendersons 72 Canada Jersey just sold for 1.4 million ( most valuable piece of Hockey memorabilia ever ) miracle memorabilia aint worth much by comparison. But hey, i like americans, so much so, i date one. cheers
America haters-both outside and inside the U.S.-need to stop posting on this video. There's more to this than just "winning a hockey game".The U.S. team was considered by everyone to be nothing more than roadkill for other, more powerful teams in the Olympics. The guys from Mass.disliked the ones from MN and vice versa. Yet Brooks took them and trained and molded them into a winning team, despite all the odds. THIS is what makes the U.S. great, and if you hate us for that; then that's tough.
@jecis1990 the reason its so important is because it was during the cold war and the USSR had the best ice hockey team there was, so a team like america, who was in a losing streak for the past olympics, beating them was unthinkable. This was a huge statement in the cold war and not just got america. seriously calm down, what's your problem
How is that a miracle? Bullshit. America (very populous country indeed) winning against USSR. Czechoslovakia (tiny country) beating USSR in hockey or Lithuainia beating USA in basketball. That is some miracle. But you with your Americanocentric worldview can't comprehend that do you?
i could totally imagine if i was alive back then and the internet and facebook existed, my news feed wouldve been absolutely blown up with posts like "USA! USA! USA!" and the like
@neilrtucker11 I still remember all of us watching the games back then in the barracks in Groton, CT, not far from Lake Placid. For us submariners, the Soviets were a big part of our lives, and a huge threat. The barracks erupted with cheers you wouldn't believe when the US beat the Soviets (then considered the best in the world) in that game. I still get chills over 30 years later when I watch it (along with a really big smile).
When this happened, the Soviet team had mostly semi-pro or professional players on the team. The American team had mostly college or minor league hockey players. It was a miracle because the Soviet team easily outmatched the American team, and as it was said a miracle occured and the American team won in the most bizarre of situations.
No... you don't know that much about hockey. All of the USSR players in that game were professional or semi-professional players. It was the equivalent of the best college players in the US playing almost the equivalent of an NHL all-star team and winning
Guys I from Russia, but looking at this game simply you are surprised that americans have made, it is a fantasy, too most that now russia will win spain the world championship ending ;)
If you're talking about who made the final game winning shot, it was Mike Eruzione, he made the shot at 10:00 in the actual game, ad you can see his name on the back of his jersey during this vid
@neilrtucker11 if Jack Edwards had called this game: *Jack Edwards screaming his lungs out for 45 seconds* "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! USA! USA! USA!"
I watched it on television. Some "genius" at ABC made the decision to tape the game and broadcast it later. Dumb! My hometown basically closed down because of the game. Dad even closed up the shop early, and, to paraphrase Al Michaels, he didn't know a blueline from a clothesline. When Eruzione fired the game-winning goal, I could hear the neighbors go completely nuts. The end of the game? Pandemonium! I've seen this moment hundreds of times and I still tear up every time.
If Joe Buck had called this game: "Clearing the zone, Morrow passes to Silk, and there's the horn, that'll do it for us here tonight. Coming up next, your local news."
@HYEYBT if gus johnson had called this game: "OH MY GOODNESS! WITH 5 SECONDS LEFT, SILK HAS IT GUARDED!!!!! AND THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!!! THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAS PULLED A MIRACLE AND SHOCKED THE WORLD!!! THEY KNOCK OFF THE MIGHTY SOVIETS, 4 TO 3!!! AND THIS PLACE IS A TRUE AMERICAN'S HAVEN!!!
"11 seconds, you've got 10 seconds! The countdown going on right now! Morrow, up to Silk! 5 seconds left in the game! Do you believe in miracles? YES!"
This game was shown on tape delay in the United States. It started at 5:00 in the afternoon on 2/22/80. ABC showed it starting at 8:00. The game ended around 7:40 that evening, because I remember seeing a crawl across the TV screen noting the upset before the game was shown on TV. I was 10 years old at the time. Our family watched the entire game, even though we knew the result.
To those of you who weren't around or don't remember, this game was every bit the big deal you think it was.
when anyone says something like "'USA is the best country in the world", its like someone saying "hamburger and fries is the best meal in the world" Is it a fucking opinion, it sure is, it is not a fact, its a mere opinion, because you can definitely argue why it is not. example of a fact? "USA havent won a ice hockey olympic gold since 1980", thats a fact because the opposite isnt true. Get that to your head
Who gives a fuck about Canada? They are slightly better than us in hockey. But the USA would obliterate them in anything else. Hell the CFL is made up of the US college players who suck. Canada will always be our bitch.
i am french canadian and in quebec our religion is hockey. in USA the north state know hockey a little bit but this is not a primary sports and i have a little trouble with that beacause you have history in this sports with the second best moments in the sports of hockey : miracle on ice. You have story but you still watching basketball or hot dog competition. You know we kick your ass last year in olympic final :D HOCKEY IS CANADA GAME.
@dahoss65 Technically nothing because they are not a country anymore. If you consider Russia the successor to the USSR then they have won more IIHF World Championships than the USA has won in there whole history (remember the Russian Federation has only been around for about 20 years.)
I was 12 years old when I saw this, and it's 32rd anniversary today. Seeing this again still gives me chills and smiling from ear to ear!!

@jawk321 it's this type of sentiment that gives americans a bad name all over the world. not only is it arrogant, it's downright stupid.
i'm an american, by the way, so i'm not suffering from "envious jealousy."

@comerapapita USA put a man on the moon. USA liberated Europe from the Nazis and a lot of modern technology has been invented by Americans.

You know we kick your ass last year in olympic final :D HOCKEY IS CANADA GAME.

dahoss65 7 months ago
@dahoss65 22 Russians don't care because the USSR won 19 Olympic gold medals while the USA only won 2.
ChipsandLAWLsa 7 months ago
@ChipsandLAWLsa What is USSR winning these days?
dahoss65 7 months ago
@dahoss65 Technically nothing because they are not a country anymore. If you consider Russia the successor to the USSR then they have won more IIHF World Championships than the USA has won in there whole history (remember the Russian Federation has only been around for about 20 years.)
ChipsandLAWLsa 7 months ago
@ChipsandLAWLsa "Technically nothing because they are not a country anymore" --- Exactly. That's all that needs to be said.
dahoss65 7 months ago
@dahoss65 And a country that doesn't exist still has more gold medals than yours.
ChipsandLAWLsa 7 months ago
@dahoss65 you're stupidity amazes me.
