Russell... thanks so much for your series on kobudo. I was wondering, it there any way of conveying ideal sequence of viewing videos. In particular for bo, because there are so many. thanks!
I don't know if "cuong nhu" is a Japanese or Okinawan based martial art, but sempai is Japanese for student who started before and doesn't change with styles - in Okinawa, a brown belt is awarded at san kyu ranking.
Okinawans used to have just white, brown and black belts. Japanese like visible class distinctions, so they introduced multiple belt colors.
Westerners just magnified this hierarchy - we've also been know to mis-translate Japanese from its proper definition.
Ha very true. I've notice that alot. But Cuong nhu is a vietnamese synthesis style. I includes seven different styles. It is mostheavily influenced by shotokan and win chun. Oh well. Thanks for the fact. I didnt know there were only three different okinawan belts.
Shotokan is a Japanese derivation of Okinawan karate, less than 100 years old, and every step of derivation includes a deviation from origins. This is one reason I never was interested in any martial arts, but Shihan keeps as true to the Okinawan source in act and thought as is possible.
No, shihan is a title given to those at master level - the man in the video is Shihan Nishiuchi, and my sensei is Shihan Bolz. Their style is the same as would be practiced in Okinawa several centuries ago.
This vid happens to make me laugh a lot because I am currently messing around with a crappy, 5ish feet, staff that I found in the garden. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is made of, but there is already a crack near the middle. :P Oh, and it's also twice as wide on one end as it is on the other.
No, the staff as a weapon started out as a stick, whatever straight piece of wood or limb you could find, that you hit someone with. That would predate any complex system that depended on the elasticity of the stick. The first arrows were propelled by atlatl or slings, simpler technology than a bow (which is not a bo!)
Very informative. I am currently writing a comic in which one of the characters is an expert with the Bo, so all details are helpful to me. Thanks for uploading this.
Pretty much. Man's best friend is a stick he beats his dog or wife with. Awesome video though but I'm turning into a history buff through martial arts.
Thank you for sharing, GREAT video with good info.

@unnamednewbie13 Nah, you get plenty of them that way from Chinese "martial arts" suppliers.

They were submitted to YT in order - any idea how I get them to put them out in sequence?

Students who started before you are your sempai, those that start after are your kohai, and the teacher is sensei (or shihan, which means master).
