This version was the only trax played in the early Los Angeles Underground Warehouse scene in the early 90's. It would often spark a Techno train where some one would pull you into this (chaotic) moving line where at any given moment... it would break up and you would be dancing/raving with complete strangers • Honest™
Also, Mentasm doesnt use this sound in the same way as Dominator does. Dominator has a long stretched out droning sound, while Mentasm twists it about, so how did they 'rip' it? You can't sample a small section from Mentasm to produce the stretched out sound in Dominator...
Beltram is the don and the Beltram mix of this is the best. BTW zZUnofficialGhostZz, this sound was not 'ripped' from Joey Beltram's 'Mentasm'. This sound was a standard sound found on a Juno synthesizer back then. Both 'Mentasm' and 'Dominator' were released on R&S records so perhaps both artist's used the same synth's to produce with.
@ShadesOfRapture Also, there were a ton of tune on the scene in this style/vibe so for people involved in the scene, dancing in warehouses till the sun came up, this was nothing new, but again i'll say, i think its an amazing tune even tho it is a rip off, but then thats how this whole scene was built, by ripping music off
@zZUnofficialGhostZz This is not a ripoff. It is a different track entirely using the same patch on the Alpha Juno synth. You know your history though.
@ShadesOfRapture Only reason it reached a wider audience is cause it made the charts being as it was released later than Mentasm it rode on the wave of exposure acid house etc was getting. Mentasm is from an earlier time when this music was being accused of corrupting kids etc. So, the only reason someone could say this reached a far bigger audience is cause they were a pop listener till they discovered this, people on the scene thought this was a rip off, although good
@ShadesOfRapture I hate to be pedantic, but considering this tune is made with a synth sound ripped directly from Joey Beltrams Mentasm which was released way before this, i would say we had heard something like this before. Oh and before you try that classic 'i been into this music for x years' i've been into this music since it was brought over as Chicago house in the mid 80's...
@zZUnofficialGhostZz This was not a 'rip' from Mentasm. It is the same patch on the Roland Alpha Juno (Juno I or Juno II) sequenced in a different way. It is layered with a matching sub bassline to make it nice and phat. This was the [MUCH] bigger anthem of the two tracks. It was common practice back in that day to try and make duplicate sound-a-like tracks. Good spinoffs include 'Who Killed JFK?' and 'Who Is Elvis?'.
@ShadesOfRapture I've only been a DJ for 4 years, but I can fully comprehend why this tune is huge. It's absolutely devastating. JB's remix is the best version for me as well. I think you're right though.. the majority of the electronic music listeners will not fully appreciate this..
Boccaccio !!! We used to drive from Amsterdam to Antwerp...club Boccaccio(Every weekend for about 2 years)...That`s where it all started (New Beat). Thanks for the upload, takes me back many years...You made a "old" tripper happy...Best wishes to all positive party-peeps;Eric.
@ShadesOfRapture I wouldn't go that far...it was mad to hear at a party but so was 'james brown is dead' and 'mr kirk's nightmare', all a bit cheesy in the end.
Nothing we'd heard before would be something like energy flash.
Beltram mix is wicked he made it even darker, dont get tunes as raw and powerful as this to tear a dancefloor up like this anymore. which is pretty sad when you thin k about it.
yeah for those of us who remember, the original domiator was cool but this mix was unreal. bout as heavy as it got....truly one of the defining moments in techno. Thanx Joey :) If there was a hall of fame, this would be on the door on the way in....
Why should people fuck off for not being born in time to actually experiance certain things?
Why should people fuck off for not being in to certain things AT THAT point in time?
I bet you are older then me (i'm 29) and i also bet i beat your ass in a oldskool pop quiz mate. You might be talkin about the oldskool, but real oldskool respects everyone from the scene who's down with it.
@Inus i speak to people all over the world about the old skool and at 45 ie bleeding old i think its mad that the music i love so much still has appeal age has nothing to do with taste trust me on this 88/92 was one hell of a time to be young and out raving as you say peace
Absolutely f@ckin rockin tune, ripped it up back in '91, and totally outdid the original mix to my mind... Remember bein in my fav club Tootos (just outside Colchester Essex), and this was the sort of tune where you might be mashed up in a corner somewhere, or talkin' bollox to your new best mate in the toilets, you'd hear it come on and literally leg it to the dance floor to be part of the mayhem.... It wasn't just me was it? Nah, heh heh...
YEEEEEEESSSS!! ive been lookin for this all of 10 years! i had no idea its was joey beltram mix! i heard it on a comp called technomancer?????? THANKS!
what an amazing tuuuuune. This is the real stuff, the quality todays youth have missed out, the stuff dreams are made of. This is a real peice of dance music without any messing around....love it.
yeah, this is a pretty great mix. this was THE mix that everyone spinned on the wheels of steel back in '91-'92 here in LA... good times! though, i've also got a more mellow mix that rivals this... hhhmmmmm. ;)
I actually just kissed myself.

@SAFeCRACKeR09 Yes. The synth patch was commonly known as the "Hoover" since it sounded kinda like a vacuum cleaner.
