in 1959, we came up to live in Killnick Layneen, Blaw Clee, and i used to travel to the nearest cinema in Dunleary and saw the trailer for this movie. At 11, i enjoyed it.
i am nearlly 64 now and find it a bit of a circus sideshow!! boring, to say the least, a nd the special effects are appealing only to 11 year olds, not 64 yr. olds!!

Just got the" Ten commandments" on Blu-ray, & I have to say if you LOVE this Film, you Must get it On Blu-ray ! I saw The Ten Commandments as a kid in the 50's & have seen it over 45 times since. But seeing it on Blu ray for the first time,I noticed elements of the film I had never seen before ! Critics say it is the best color& sound transfer of a classic film to Blu-ray ever !
I have fallen in love with this great film all over again !!
If Elmer Bernstein had stopped composing after writing this score he would have been just fine. What a dynamic piece of music for a timeless and unforgettable film.
I don't care what the Nostalgia Critic thinks. This movie is FAR superior to the recent film "The Prince Of Egype" (It was good, but not nothing can top this).
I would agree with you because this is one of my favorite movies of all time but to be fair, it was competeing with another one of my favorites; a beautiful adaptation of Jules Verne's "Around The World In 80 Days". Even if I were the one deciding the best picture of the year at the time I probably would have had a hard time deciding being such a huge Jules Verne fan. Cut those guys a break, it was a tough call.
@xxbobdeexx Did god create man or did man create god? Remember, remember the fifth of November. The people should not fear the state: the state should fear the people,
Victor Young was signed to compose the music for 'Ten Commandments'. He recommended Elmer Bernstein to Cecil B de Mille when he became ill, and realised that he would not be able to work on the film.
I really like this movie, but Cecil B. DeMille made darn sure we knew EVERYONE who worked on this movie. Man, he wasn't gonna let you just watch the movie..... he was gonna make you soak in Every..... Single..... Inch..... Of It.
@xxmass222 interesting story. Heston & Robinson were on diff ends of the political spectrum. But they were also good buddies. Heston wanted to jump-start Robinson's career. They were also together in Soylent Green--Robinson's final movie before his death.
On the soundtrack of Caddy Shack the music from Ten Cs is playing in the scene where the old bishop is golfing in a storm. The bishop was played by Henry Wilcockson, who worked with DeMille for 30 years and died not long after Caddy Shack was completed.
i love this movie. the brilliant technicolor to the wonderful actors. the music is beautiful. it was the best movie telling the story of moses and the effects were just amazing.
Yes they were...Elizabeth Taylor and friends, Marilyn Monroe and many friends, Errol Flynn on his yacht, too many to count. And then there was Rock Hudson, well, maybe we shouldn't go there.
Remember that in 1956 Demille had just won Best Picture four years earlier for the Greatest Show on Earth so the Academy no longer felt obligated to recognize him any longer. Also during his lifetime his films were very rarely recognized by any film critics even though popular with movie audiences.
The only problem was that a beautifully shot, directed, scored and all around done version of Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 days" was released that year as well. If it had been any other year, this would have won... Both movies are excellent though and I love them both!
added this to 1957 in my music playlists for EACH of the past 100 years. A trip back in time to any year's music with the click of your mouse . . . . . .
This was the breakthrough for Elmer Bernstein that placed him in the ranks of Hollywood's greatest Silver Age composers, joining the likes of Herrmann, Tiomkin, Goldsmith, Friedhofer, Jarre, Greene and Williams - and what a grand entrance it is. One of the truly grand and heroic scores of all time.
You might interested that one of the trumpeters on this score was Herb Alpert, who also has a small role in the film. Alpert played on many film scores before he started A&M Records with his partner Jerry Moss (an eventually formed the Tijuana Brass).
Thank you; that is a piece of history of which I was unaware.
It was in the late '80s, that I first saw this picture in a theater; it had just had its initial restoration. The film began in a 1.33:1 aspect showing a stage with closed curtain, out from behind which stepped Cecil B. DeMille to address an unseen audience. The image then cut to the Paramount logo as Bernsteins heroic Main Title began, widening to the full VistaVision width as the music rose and the credits rolled. Extraordinary!
Indeed it is. Twenty years ago, of course, the technology did not exist, and that original theatrical introduction was not included in the deluxe VHS set issued in 1997 for the 40th anniversary. It remains quite an impressive thing to have experienced on the big screen.
@vividwatch47 Actually, Alpert was one of the guys pounding the drums during in the orgy scene at the foot of Mt. Sinai. He's on screen only for a sec though. Blink and you'll miss him. And as long as I'm here, Mike Connors (Mannix), was the Amalekite leader at Jethro's well.
@benhurfanclub, Clint Walker has a small role too. Interestingly, Elmer Bernstein got the assignment when DeMille's regular composer Victor Young dropped out due to illness (and recommended Bernstein, who was grateful), and when M.G.M, refused to loan Miklos Rozsa out to Paramount.
@vividwatch47 Interesting stuff, that. There's no end to the strange twists 'n turns behind the biggest movies. As much as I admire Rozsa for his work in Ben Hur and Quo Vadis, it turned out to be fortunate fluke that Bernstein wrote the score for TTC. This is undoubtedly his best work.
Incidentally, I've always wondered about Walker. What was his role? I could never pin that one down. Hebrew or Egyptian?
@vividwatch47 ....and one more thing about Alpert: I think he was one of the poor buggers struck down by that lightening bolt after Moses tossed the tablets. Blink and you'll miss that too.
Top 10 all time greatest movie. At its core "The 10 Commandments" poses a burning question for the ages : Who should rule the heart and minds of men ? God or the State ? :)
I wish we could get some of these older color epics on Blu-ray. I would buy this and Ben Hur in a heartbeat. Instead we get The Towering Inferno and Battle of the Bulge.
I have always loved this prelude. It truly is a majestic composition. However, I have ALWAYS wanted to hear a re-mastered version of it...perhaps play by a great orchestra in a highly accoustic recording.
Tenor5274, I have to agree. Yul Brynner succeeded so much in portraying the role of Ramses that I usually think of Brynner when I think of the Egyptian Pharoah of the Exodus. In my mind, he BECAME the character.
Aside from that, Yul Brynner was stunningly handsome. ;)
I would argue that Yul Brenner's performance was so good that it actually made him the most compelling and in some ways most sympathetic character in the film!
@boyinthedrain You put it much better that I. And let's not forget E.G. Robinson's contribution. His gangster persona served both him and the movie very well.
