I've seen a Thames clip from 1981 where most of a trailer and Tom Edwards' in-vision link are in b&w - presumably they turned on the effect (that version of their ident was usually shown before old b&w films) too early ...
There is still a lot of unseamed coal in this country - I'm very sympathetic to the argument that the industry was dismantled out of political revenge for Heath's downfall, though whether many people would want to do the work today is a whole other question.
