Wow, it's hard to understand the New York controllers with their accents, talking too fast and blurring words. That plus so many airports in the area, it must not be fun to pilot around there.
Why would Teterboro guy get fired, he responded immediately and perfectly. It was the La Guardia guy who got confused trying to communicate, wasting precious seconds.
All respect for the landing, and don't forget credit to the co-pilot who may actually have been flying the plane while the captain communicated and tried to restart engines.
But later analysis showed if they'd turned back immediately while one of them tried to restart engines, they could have landed on a runway.
I'm still awestruck that the crew were able to safely land the plane. Anyone the least bit fimiliar with the operation of jet aircraft can easily understand the nearly impossible odds of making such a landing.
I'd like to congratulate the ATC for issuing vectors for 1549 while still maintaining control of all the other aircraft. The mistake of calling the plane 1529 was entirely incosequental. The controller did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do under the most stressful possible circumstances.
LOL, such a calm pilot. "Runway 1 open for you 1549!". " NO" (lol) . "Ok 1549 what do you need to land?" "We'll be in the Hudson" haha.... the dialogue is mad funny although the pilot is exceptional, bravo mr Sully!
Maybe I'm missing something here, but after Sully mentions that he's gonna be in the hudson like 3 times, the ATC is never heard contacting rescue. How long did it take him to figure out that the plane is in trouble and he should start doing something other than rattling off runway options?
Its so funny when you can see the airplanes speed and altitude (in another video) and the controller is like "you can land at newark runway xxx at 7 miles" and sully is 300 feet above the ground :P
Hello! What about Jeff for goodness sake? Nobody is mentioning Jeff who was darned GREAT in his own right. ;o)) I love Sully God knows, we live about an hour from him here in California, but it was JEFF flying the plane when the bird strike first occured and kept it together to hand over to Sully so....GOD BLESS SULLY AND JEFF! I'd love to see a Jeff Skiles page on Wiki. What's Jeff's backstory??
That's really interesting that they mistakenly said 1529 several times. I was actually on US Airways 1529 3 days later from Charlotte/Douglas to Denver International. Eerie.
We aren't deaf. There is a ton going on behind the scenes. The controller involved heard it as played on the tape. A primary target appeared on the radar after the ditch call, and the controller thought they may have gotten an engine restarted. He kept issuing radar vectors in case the crew did not have time to call. When something like this happens, in real life, it can be hard to understand and deal with. Both the crew and controllers did a great job. I'm a 22 year ATC vet. U?
Well put, and if you are not int he industry you don't know that there are many things going on behind the scenes that you are not aware of. The ATC guy kept calm and also kept on giving 1549 several diversion options, while still monitoring his other departures. Well done to him! I am inthe industry as well, and know how stressful it can be, but also what is going that others don't know about in the background.
Why are these airtraffic controller guys so def??? The pilot facing death before his eyes is as calm and talking as clearly as anyone ever. He mentioned twice about the HUDSON river, the first time he didn't acknowledge at all and the second time he didn't hear what he said. Then the other guy couldn't hear the airtraffic tell him he lost thrust in the engines. They need to either revamp the sound system or give these guys standard hearing tests every year. GEEES.
alot goes through a mind during an emergency. The Controller just came out and said he was on autopilot. He didn't panic, and he DID hear the bird strike and the hudson, but the rarity of this event made him skeptic at first.

When the one ATC was talking to the other he said "which engines?" And at 2:12 the pilot said "we'er going to be in the Hudson" their was a pause and ATC said "Say again Cactus" And at 3:06 the ATC asked another person to repeat something. Pretty poor imo, the pilot sounded more calm than him.
and to rdf7777, trying to go to teterborough would have taken the plane over/near a populated area, and with no thrust, thats not a good idea. please. don't become a pilot.
Poor controller, from the sound of his voice he really thought they bought it....If capt. Sullenberger hadn't made his choice for the Hudson and tried for a runway they well have done. What a great pilot.
The focus is amazing, with such little time to execute and with so many lives on board. This calmness is natural with such experience, but also shows why there are two pilots on these planes, and not just one: one to fly the plane, and the other to troubleshoot. The pilot and co-pilot must choose fight or flight, and they chose to fight. The passengers and their families are surely thankful for that.
Why isn't there some sort of shield in front of each engine that would permit unobstructed airflow and prevent airborne objects from impacting engine components?
would probably be less aerodynamic and i believe the engines need an airflow to go through the engine to creat a bit of thrust? I don't know, I'm sure they've thought about trying to protect the engines.
Considering that some plane crashes have resulted in safety upgrades for future flights (US Airways 232, TWA 800), they might come up with an idea for a screen after this incident.
Because then they'd need to make the engines larger to compensate, which requires more fuel and less passenger and cargo load. Not practical. Solution: don't hit birds, and know what to do if you do hit birds.
Hey, ATC called them 1529 and 1549, and the captain himself called it 1539 :D
