there is a possibility that U.S. or European laws that forced the independent components on the NES motherboard to be farther apart to prevent a shortage or fire.
Cool vid. I was once amazed at how cosmetically different the the American NES was to the Japanese Famicom. I was glad to learn Nintendo America decided to the allow the control pads to be detachable. Anyways, about the expansion port underneath NES - I believe I have some a 1993 CES footage of the Baton modem that was planning to release for NES but it was eventually cancelled. I'll have to go through my tapes and upload it soon.
What he says about the frequencies is true. I used to own a famicom back in the days and when I was playing on one tv, if I did a search on the other TV which was like in the other room, it would pick up the game which I was playing on the other TV. LOL it was quite funny watching same game on two TVs when one of them wasnt even connected to the TV.
I can't believe the US model was made to look like it did by choice...
Back in 1985 it was seen as a more professional look... (More like a home VCR as apposed to the then stereotyped "Kid toy" look of the traditional top loaders)
But looking at just how big, ugly, and bland it looks now... Even the carts had to be beefed up just to fit in it...
The expansion port is just connects directly to the cartridge port on the NES. The NES's cart port is 72 pins, the Famicom is 60 pins. So, it would be no different than plugging the cart into the regular spot, except the difference in pin numbers would require a convertor. For pirated NES games, you need to have a work-around for the NES10 verification chip, which is why you didn't see too many and they required you to do things like press a button on the cart, etc. for it to work.
Awesome video. I just picked up my first Famicom and its on its way as we speak! I can't wait to get it I have been looking for the right deal to come along for a long while now!
Yay! It's interesting that NOA had to make a new system that was based off of the Famicom, but I thought they could've at least picked a better color than Gray. Compared to the famicom, it looks dull.
Making a motherboard about 2/3 times bigger seems interesting too.
Plenty of good reasons why the NES is better than famicom. See my video with a full list of pros and cons.

How did you not electrocute yourself taking the NES apart like that while it was plugged in and had the power on?

There was mor planned.
An Taperecorder and, like in Japan, an Basic Set with Keyboard was planned.
There whre also Plans to attach the Disc Drive on this Port, becouse the Methode of the Famicom does not Work with the NES (Ram Adapter).
