  • I think people still don't totally get this. Especially at the end he says 'I keep changing the key'. He in fact doesn't change the key at all. 'E' remains the tonal center the whole time. ALL of the notes he's playing are heard as scale degrees in relationship to the key of E. There are 12 notes. Learn how each of them sounds in relationship to a key center and you've got it.

  • @11jupitercowboy8 Extra clarification: When he says 'I keep changing the key' he means he keeps changing the scale or chord. It's really just what classical musicians would call a 'pedal point'. Also, it's important to make sure that you really are hearing that E as the 1 before attempting to work on that kind of thing. He could've set it up with a cadence first to really make it clear.

  • @dmohr7 I used to agree with you, until I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Wow...the endless number of things you can do with a guitar.

  • wow the long ass black intro....was it really necessary? Think..

I was going to copy/paste, but then I took an arrow to the knee

  • soooo stoned he is :D

  • I started learning Pitch axis today but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • @stonewickison seriously?

  • @SevenStringShredHead You've clearly never taken an arrow in the knee. Trust me it sucks, I used to be an adventurer.

  • @Tremblay343 FUS RO DAH!!!

  • @stonewickison SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  • @conman12000 awwww..."Don't you cry tonight, I still love you baby..."

  • @stonewickison HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 9GAG army on youtube!!!!!!

  • Pitch Axis. This is retarded. It's funny how Satch took something that's almost as old as music and pretended it was some crazy new invention. Way to go Satch! Most of us already know how modes work, and how you can change between modes of the same root. Here's something you can play with. You can even change between modes of a different root. Crazy isn't it?

  • @Sunderlanding So anything that you already know about guitar should be removed from all guitar lessons worldwide, right?

  • @sleazychestnut Can't you read? I never said that. All I'm saying is that Pitch Axis isn't anything new. People act like Satch came up with some revolutionary harmonic technique, and it's it's been around forever.

  • @Sunderlanding

i didn't know that the guitar was among the first instruments ever made. mind telling me where you discovered that? cause you know, a theory based on guitar modes for the convenience of it being used on the guitar can't possibly be used in the same way when you're playing the piano. fundamental differences you know.

  • @FeedMeForiAmATroll Boy you really are dumb. A simple search will show you that "guitar" modes can be played on any instrument. Modes were around ages ago. Changing between them has been around since basically the same time they were around, so yea it's been done.

  • @Sunderlanding

jeez, do you play the guitar? yes, you can play guitar modes on an instrument, but the guitar modes don't go though peoples brains while they play the piano. when they play a minor they think a minor, not d dorian. the layout of the instrument makes a huge fundamental difference. also, it's more than just going from c mixolydian to c dorian or whatever. the tonic is most commonly used as a bass note which is something satriani perfected first.

  • @Sunderlandi

continuing: another crucial part of the theory is that for each mode there are specific chords that accompany these modes. take for example the ionian mode. when maj6 and maj7 chords are being played then that is the mode that should be played. then there is the locrain mode (pain in the ass mode). min7b5 and min7b5b9 chords suit the locrian mode best. you're missing some key points here, have you ever just wikid pitch axis theory? satch invented this.

  • @Sunderlanding

my bad. it turns out pitch axis was introduced to satch by a his music teacher in high school (bill wescott). it's been around since the beginning of the 20th century according to satch. once again, wikipedia fucks me over. somebody should fix that shit. still, i don't recall any other musician with such an advanced knowledge and use of pitch axis. there is the half-assed pitch axis, and then there is satch lol. kind of like comparing lane's stretches to... anybody.

  • GOT A LAP DANCE AT THE STRIP CLUB AND I SHOWED HER ALL ABOUT PITCH AXIS!!

  • SATCH, Y U WEAR SHADES INDOORS?!

  • Wtf, sunny day ??

  • Hate his personality, hate his playing style, hate his bald head, hate his stupid sunglasses, hate his guitar. I don't mind his songwriting. But what I really hate is the theory of "pitch axis". It's some bullshit technique he frabicated to make himself sound intellectual. Any musician who has ever picked up a guitar and strums a few chords for the first time is basically using pitch axis...pitch axis is pretty much the same as normal guitar playing.

  • @StudioMasterS500 "Hi, I'm Satch. Today I'm going to read a Music Theory book for you and interpret it for guitar playing and call it Pitch Axis." ... "Hey Satch, I understand what you're talking about, it's modal rhythm right? using chords based from modes? havn't they been doing that in jazz since the 50s?" ... "What?! They have!? Uhhhh.... yes of course they have. It's called Pitch Axis." .... "....Right...."

  • @StudioMasterS500 Chill out dude.

  • @StudioMasterS500 totally agree with you man!!

  • @StudioMasterS500 dont hate. its christmas. its not good to hate

  • EXCELLENT way to explain pitch axis.
