  • im transgender and i can really connect to this song. i am happy to be a woman and will live my live as a woman regardless of what anyone thinks.

  • This is such an amazing song, loved it from the first time I heard it.

  • I am a girl. But that didn't mean I didn't spend my childhood wanting to be Robin Hood and Tuxedo Mask (A tux and roses? He had style). This song is so wonderful.

  • @mikelob217 you're means you are. You are wrong.

Oh i do love trolling trolls.

To be honest, this song is not my cup of tea but that's just the style, i appreciate that others enjoy it and i'm definitely all for its message.

Its a damn shame that everyone just wants to steriotype people instead of just letting them be as they wish.

  • I love this song and I love Dar Williams. It's so sad how women are told that they have to be protected and wear clothes that are uncomfortable so that they can look attractive and it's so sad that men aren't allowed to cry and talk about their emotions. Makes me want to cry how ignorant people are sometimes. Gender stereotypes suck.

  • Thank you...

  • Ummm... What is the point of putting down people on this thing?? I mean it is their opinion and don't be mean and correct people.

  • It doesn't matter what this song is about. It's beautiful and has a wonderful message; there's no need to fight.

  • This song doesn't have to be limited to gay or transgendered people. It is suiting for a lot of children. Children who are allowed to be who they are often blur gender lines until someone makes them fit into the "proper" gender roles My Dad had no sons, so my sister and I helped him tinker. I am 48 & I still refuse to fit the proper gender roles. I cook, bake, sew, repair electronics, shoot a gun, tinker with cars, wear pretty clothes & sweet perfume, and I'm happy being a woman who was a boy.

  • So I am transgendered, this song very clearly relates to that experience in a way that I really can't put into words. I feel like it is a little odd that no one has mentioned the existence of trans people in these comments. And DustinandDillon, are you for real man? Not everyone is Catholic, and not all Catholics believe being gay is a bad thing...

  • I think you all need hugs!!! Love the song and its meaning!

  • It's really true, the assholes on Youtube can find something bad to say about even the best things.

  • @Mikelob217 im just a little confused... if you don't like the song at all then why do you keep coming back to it to make those posts? seems kinda childish to keep complaining about it. if you really don't like the song then stop coming back to the page. it will make everyone happy

  • And the boy is saying he picked flowers and is sweet and soft, things boys are not encouraged to be in American these days. He is saying he cried as a child and no longer can, and that he may have lost some of his kindness, but that boys and girls still have a lot in common. This song can represent a sad repercussion of growing up, or it can represent whatever negative thing you choose it to be. I prefer not to be obnoxiously negative and critical but hey, that's just me.

  • Haha you idiot. This song isn't about being gay, it's about how boys and girls have a lot in common and typical stereotypes of males and females are just that, stereotypes. She is talking about a girl who is looking back on her childhood and saying how she rode her bike and skinner her knees and climbed trees like boys do.

  • this is the crappiest and most pathetic piece of shit i have ever heard and it is 4:48 of my life I will never get back

  • @Mikelob217 you wasted more of your life writing that stupid "pathetic" comment ^_^

  • @DustinAndDillan oh really then why is it that all my comments seem to get thumbs up. This song is pathetic and my comment was 100% worth it. Dar Williams makes the gayest music ever

  • @Mikelob217 well, for starters, I bet it'd be worth it for someone who amuses themselves being a complete asshole, second troll harder, I'm getting amused by your futile attempts, thirdly there is not anything wrong with being gay. please reply, your an amusing little pet troll

  • @DustinAndDillan First of all, you used the wrong "your", it was supposed to be you're. But that's besides the point. Dar Williams' music is absolutely pathetic. She tries to send a hidden message that is just complete bullshit. Also, being gay for one thing is a sin if you're Catholic, and it is disgusting in my opinion, along with most of the world.

  • @Mikelob217 find something better to complain about than spelling mistakes, also I think its SOOOO cute you still think think theres a big man in the sky that makes everything happen. grow a pair and join us in reality. you're no longer of any interest to me

  • @DustinAndDillan You're retarded. You dodge the main point and talk about the other things i said. this song is a load of bull and people think it is good because it is so clever. Oh she says when i was a boy because when she was a kid she did stuff that boys do, that is so clever right. Holy shit this person sucks

  • @Mikelob217 There was also supposed to be a period between "your" and "it." If you're going to correct someone's spelling and grammar, please use proper punctuation yourself.

  • @dementis93 You smell

  • @DjDrBk Um... alright, then.

  • @Mikelob217 Awww, that's not very kind of you to say about other Dar's song. Wouldn't you feel insulted and wronged if someone said that all Catholics are closed-minded assholes? Wouldn't you be sad if someone said your religon was pathetic and full of contradictions? Please, treat your neihbors as you want to be treated even if you don't agree. What goes around, comes around. Someday, you'll meet a person who will treat you very badly and then who will stick up for you?

  • Vomit

  • 7 people clicked the wrong button obviously.

  • @Handitar It looks like 8, if you include me.

  • @Handitar u suck

  • Dar Williams is my favorite singer of all time. No one writes poetic lyrics like her. Okay, Adam Young is pretty poetic, but no one beats Dar. She is powerful yet calming at the same instant. I've only heard the live version of this song up till now. What is the name of the album that this comes from? I've always wondered. Love, love, love

  • @braindog12 true dat

  • A great poet, she puts you in the moment.

  • its like Shane!

  • @StradTrompeter

What makes this song wonderful is that this song is not sexist either way- just two adults recalling their childhood, a time when gender roles were not so important and they could be a little more free-spirited

  • i saw her at the edmonton folk fest but i was like three so i don't remember, =[

  • Five people are soulless

  • amazing tune. i have a 7 1/2 year old daughter that's a true free spirit. sadly like my two older kids, the magic and wonder of childhood will soon be gone forever. it will be replaced with cynicism, apathy and their destiny to be a cog working for the man.

  • @yarbles67

Why? Why? Why? Your children do not have to adapt a soul-crushing garbage conception of life! I hope they'll come up with something much more enlivening than that! All the best.

  • Who says lyrics have to be complicated to be beauitful?

it's all in the manner of how you caress the words you speak.

  • Happy Birthday Dar! (April 19, 1967)

  • @StradTrumpeter your so right

  • @StradTrumpeter Uh ... if this strikes you as angry, I wonder what you would make of Marianne Faithfull's "Why D'ya Do It?" or Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" (or, come to think of it, what you make of your own obvious hostility toward a piece that is completely non-threatening and sweet almost to the point of being saccharine).

  • I can't listen to this without crying a little. It's wonderful.

  • This song brings something good to this world. It's not only beautiful, it makes us remember the beautiful things we lost when, growing up, we were forced into gender roles. Maybe if we remember, we can get it back.

  • Yep,

    Remember when?

  • so close to tears, its so accurate :(

  • Just listen.

  • I love the irony of the advertisement I'm looking at right now on this page for MoXie girlz slutty fashion dolls.

  • i cant see...

  • My social studys teacher played this song and had us right notes about it hehe

  • you lucky cat, I was a social studies teacher and have been fired twice now for being Pagan. Last time my ex-principal has spent last 5 yrs blocking every job attempt I have made. Gotta love North Carolina, she can get away with it lol.

  • @DramaBroadwayCat My English teacher played this song and had Us talk about it hehe

  • I LOVE this song! <3 <3

    I just got goosebumps.

  • This was the first song I ever heard Dar sing in 1995 at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. I didn't know who Dar was, and I never heard the song before that moment, but I was moved to tears.

I loved Dar and her music ever since. Her music is a gift that keeps on giving.

  • Hmm, this makes me feel so young. You first heard it the year I was born... It's a brilliant commendation to Dar that her music travels through generations.

Such a beautiful song and a melodious warning to the future, it's so moving - maybe people will listen now :)

  • Yes, but that is the hallmark of a great writer. I think she's one of the best. There are some songs that I never fully understood the significance of for years. It's a testament to how deep and complicated her lyrics are.

I was wondering, Dar wrote a book for younger people. Have you read it?

  • Yeah, a very good point.

Oh, no! I havent read it, do you know what it's called?

  • Sorry for the delayed reply.

    It's called "Amalee."

  • Ah, thanks :)

    I'll check it out

  • Who doesn't miss childhood? This captures those moments you remember as a child. Wow,total honesty.

  • and the way that when u get older u are forced into a mold of ur gender.

  • @Nancoman Only the truly insane or truly spoiled miss childhood

  • To date, still the only song that's ever made me cry.

  • I have loved this song from the first moment I heard it. It means a lot to me. Recently, the chorus director for my school asked those of us in the chorus to pick pieces that we could sing as solos or duets. I chose this song, and got the sheet music from the school library. I'm not allowed to sing it because it mentions the word topless.

  • My health teacher played this song for us. She rocks too. :D

  • gorgeous song... auditioned with this and won a lead. hits me close to home.

  • This is a great song, with a wistful melody and lyrics that touch all of us.

  • Dar's politics make me cringe, but this song as an absolute 100% masterpiece. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 19.

  • I just love this song soo much!

  • I love this song. When I quietly listen to the lyrics, I can feel it in my soul. Beautiful, beautiful song...
