  • there is no such thing as a heavy metal scale. you can write music of almost any genre with almost any scale.

  • OHMYGOD, A HARMONIC MINOR SCALE. WHY CHANGE THE NAME TO ACCOMMODATE "GUITARISTS" WHO DON'T KNOW SHIT ALL ABOUT THEORY?

  • "Heavy Metal Scale" This title killed every single guitar player on earth

  • sound pretty cool

  • god bless you bro!

  • @TheInbornMechanics

OH YEAH. I made molson the password to my computer. I miss Montreal.

  • You should do a "betcha can't play this" lol

  • hey dude ur vids are amazing and ur skills too....can u tell me how do u get that tone on ur amp (settnings) and can u plz plz plz tell me the exact tabs for 1:45 :(

  • are you tuned to E FLAT????

  • @3117ss He's tuned to D.

  • HVB - Home Video Quality!

But... dmn it, you are soo good!

  • this is so funny

  • This is so Yngwie

  • really love this and you in bloom vids haven't checked out others yet but I'm impressed

  • ...14th.

  • nice lesson. i like it. mere vids, there are a lot players that want to learn

  • Wow I love this scale. It's just epic.

  • HI BOB

  • I cant pick all of this can i just do a bunch of pull offs?

  • @MrHammerofdeath

How you play it is pretty much up to you.

But the point of scales, I would think, would be to practice picking.

Idk for sure though, I'm still pretty noobish. :P

  • Hey dude, thanks for posting. This is extremely helpful!

  • Your From Canada Please Get A Camera :D

  • @TheInbornMechanics These guys just had a canada moment...

  • la verdad muy bueno si señor

  • la verdad muy bueno si señor

  • What Tuning Is That.? bobyCripsy. is it Drop D. or Half Step Down(E Flat). ?

  • Nice one brother, it's all about Dominant phrygian, Locrian, Melodic Minor and Harmonic Minor for metal.

  • Sorry, Is It All The Same Am Key or in the second and third there are two other tabs?

  • randy roads was a genus he would flip the scales around all the time would not keep a set why you also do this that cool

  • You are amazing..!!

  • Do you do lessons? i live in t.dot :)

  • Could u put a tutorual up on the fast pattern u play with it?

  • In the tab you showed, is there a reason you play the 3 on the D instead of an 8 on the A?

  • @metallica442 There is no reason, both are the same note, it might just be more comfortable playing lower down the fret board, who knows, just play it the way you feel most comfortable.

  • @TheInbornMechanics (Burp!)

  • @BobbyCrispy It's kind of misleading to call this the "heavy metal scale", or the minor pentatonic the "rock scale". You can write metal or rock with diminished scales, augmented, major/minor scales, or any other scales.

  • @ibz120 also bands like the sword and corrosion of conformity who play stoner metal type stuff use the pentatonic minor

  • @BobbyCrispy what REALLY throws me off is that I can't seem to keep the picking up to pace with my other fingers. It gets really frustrating.

  • wait...so what scale exzactly is this minor major diminished or augmented? n if minor harmonic natural or melodic?

  • Ahh, back in the days before he had his legendary catchphrase: "Hi, I'm Bobby Crispy"

  • Yes nice stickers go Leafs go make the playoffs

  • Nice lesson dude,i can learn this, its gonna take some time but i think i can get it.

  • I always find it easier to remember scales with intervals

    eg harmonic minor

    1,2,b3,4,5,b6,7,1/8.

    :)

  • One good thing about the shit expertvillage is that their videos lead to useful videos like this

  • Thanks so much! I've been trying to find out what scale to shred to!

  • Great lesson. I love "heavy" metal!

  • best guitar teacher on youtube.

  • Harmonic minor!!!

  • wtf is your guitar tuned down ½ step or is it mine that is tuned ½ step up?

  • heavy metal scale?

    LOL

    there is no such thing!

But it sounds darker and Lamb of God uses a very samiliar scale... so you got a point though.

    Minor harmonic kicks ass.

  • Ozzy isn't even metal. It's like lalabyes for me

  • thank you bob from toronto canada

  • heavy metal scale :DD..thats sure a name..im giving U 5stars for darkness:D

  • as soon as the tab popped up, i paused and played the scale over and over as fast as i could. nearly 2 mins in and i feel ive accomplished somethin', thanks man!

  • what's that guitar ?

  • @quainhankid14 You can't recognize a fender when you see one ?

  • Comment removed

  • @ariexmae lol, it's actually a fender ! I see his other clip !

  • @quainhankid14 Uhhh .. I said it's a Fender.

  • great video dude thanks for the help!

  • Until now, i always thought that was the egyptian music scale. fuck you media

  • I always think of Toccata when I play this scale.

  • i stumbled on to this scale sort of by accident, my daughter was playing fur elise on the piano so i decided to learn it on the guitar from her sheet music. it has lead me in a whole new direction. fur elise is in e but the ratios of intervals match what you are showing here. rock on man thanx for the vid. it just tied together the reality of what i was applying.

  • At last someone who knows how to give a guitar lesson. This lesson is awesome and many thanks for uploading it.

  • I like those, they sound like classical music

  • Mr. Crispy if been watching allmost all your videos and I must say you fucking rule the neck join a metal band and right somthing I can ilegaly download

  • good vids xd :D

  • Thank you, man really good video.

Helped a lot and it´s good u using tabs. Keep it up that way :D

  • bobby Me and my friend made some kind of improvisation about my song solo ... please check it out and tell us you impresions ...... and btw man youre rocking , can you make the Snow by Rhcp lesson ? Thanks man youre awesome

  • Is that a Peevey Predator you've got there?

  • Thanks for teaching me how to play guitar Bobby. You ROCK!!

  • Hey Bob!

  • ....i don't get it....? am i stupid??? can someone explain it another time?? thanx

  • @SitotiKurton Learning scales is pointless? If you think that then put down the guitar.

  • Did you really just call it the rock and heavy metal scale. Shame upon you sir.

  • thanks alot eh

  • Sir,

Your playing amazing..i'd like to know...how i can mix any scale...for example the heavy metal scale and make different licks from it?

I mean how can i rearrange the scale to make different types of riffs? Please reply.

    Thank you.

  • Thats not a "heavy metal scale" its a harmonic minor, and its only abused by heavy metal, not utilized -__-

  • @porchmonkey401k right?...i.was.just.thinking.the.same.thing...this.scale.is.so.old.it's.not.even.funny

  • @newoaklandlocal it came at the time that music was organized, its just a minor scale with a major 7th i mean COME ON

  • @porchmonkey401k It's also the most widely used Scale in modern music, Diminished is better anyways :u

  • Why not 'Minor pentatonic' and 'Harmonic Minor' instead of 'METAL SCALE' and 'ROCK SCALE'? Get a Grip.

  • "hi im bob from toranto canada.."

one of the most famous phrases on youtube baha

  • nice lesson but it is not really exclusive for metal i think, more like classical i think, but also used in jazz and spanish/latin music, off course also metal

it is also a mode of phrygian dominant, when u are like in a harmonic minor, you can can swith to e phrygian (or spanish gypsy) when playing or and E chord, it has the same notes

  • thanks a lot man, cudnt find anythin like this on the internet. Thanks alot!

  • @SitotiKurton If you actually knew the scales there would be less guessing and flubbing notes. This isn't a good video, it is a beginner style lesson in theory, but a bad one. If you don't already know the scales this video is worthless, and if you do, this video is worthless. Learn the scales, apply them to songs you know, and forget about the halfwits on YouTube.

  • @baadshepherd why the fuck are u watchin the video then, if all ur gonna do is critisize it.

    Twat.

  • @mosherboy1337 I watched thinking it might be a decent video. Realizing it isn't I tried to explain a better way to go than this. I responded to a claim that learning scales is pointless, the usefulness of what he tries to teach here is very limited, hence my claim that the video has little or no worth. You, my friend, are the twat.

  • locrian and phrygian modes also work.

  • the diminished scale is more heavy than harmonic minor so are the Phrygian and locrian modes its a fine scale, but it is not even focused in metal, it is widely used classically and in every genre of music(also this is the only place I could find that calls it that)

  • what guitar did you use?

  • IF YOU LIKE METAL CHECK OUT OUR BAND!!!

  • @ItzizAustin awesome! are you going to make a video of it?? if so let me know eh!

  • @BobbyCrispy , bobby i am confused, at 1:45 u start at the 4th string 12th fret but then go to the 13th fret on your next 1/4 note. your tab says to start on the 15th fret then then 14th then the 12. i am a begineer player but i know when sounds go up and down. am i counting the frets barckward or am i just crazy i know when a sound is lower than the previous one...i just want to learn some scales and I like your tab but I am confused

  • i sit for hours a day figuring out stuff like this and ive never actually figured out this one 0_0 you are my god lol

  • @SitotiKurton learning scales is pointless? o.O

  • you are a very good teacher man

  • i just started, i need to learn how to read tabs....

  • @SLIPKNOT8018 I recommend you learn to read sheet music first.

  • the heavy metal scale lol

  • @SitotiKurton Negative sir, Knowing your scales and modes makes it much easier to play along with other musicians and also helps in writing melodies.

But, you don't HAVE to learn them. I mean, if you want to write shit like Gorguts or Immolation, then this sort of theory doesn't help at all, except maybe in creating a solo.

Nothing is pointless in music... Except maybe breakdowns ^_^

  • thank you man this really helped me out :>)

  • Hey Bobby, that rocked! Yeah! Fuck yeah! Man I smoked too much weed already today.

Speaking of metal, when you get a chance bro please check out my latest - I did a cover of THE METAL and added a solo too. I got my sword out and swung it around too... metal on metal. Fuck yeah!

8===0 - - - - That was my dong emitting it's metal juice on the face of the metal haters. Not life-size either, I swear.

  • hahah no offence but a mcanadian metal head ?! eh? haha

  • thanks man luv u

  • Thank you Randy Rhoads for bringing this type of musicianship to metal. The greatest ever. This is an excellent lesson by the way.

  • @stygian1967 Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple and Uli Jon Roth from the Scorpions were using this scale way before Randy Roads. If you appreciate Randy I strongly recommend you check out some early Deep Purple as well.

  • awesome lesson, and thanks for giving the chords to solo over. lots of vids leave them out

  • awesome video man :D thanks for the pointers me and my band have already put together a bit a song using this scale

  • @benny332 awesome! is the video on youtube?? i'd like to hear it.....

  • @BobbyCrispy i saw your tutorials about 6 months ago, and they are great i've been trying to find them for ages, and i could only remember your name not the name of the lesson so it was quite difficult. Ace lessons keep it going your cool.

  • nice to see someone teaching advanced lessons....well explained and demonstrated......you wouldn't happen to have more advanced stuff BobbyCrispy? I have been playing for 25 yrs and feel like I hit a learning wall....even tried to get lessons but knew everything that the instructor had to offer...I know I don't know everything, so I am searching for something unique....I play everything from country (pedalsteel licks) to metal (and everything in between) any suggestions would be appreciated...

  • thanks

  • Unfortunately we have to run across idiots in too many places. Thanks for being generous and sharing BobbyCrispy. I thank you.

  • good lessson!

  • Don't call it the heavy metal scale when it is the harmonic minor. You will make stupid people call it that forever. Otherwise good.

  • 0:50 to 1:06 sounds like SA RE GA MA PA DHA NEE SAA. lol \m/ \m/

  • great!

  • dude this guy is the best at lessons ! l bet the people who jump him are fail guitar teachers or jealos guitarists

  • you should put a flesh light on your dog

  • bach invented metal!

  • what the hell does a scale do for you

  • sausage fingers

  • nice...

    thanks man... very helpful...

  • duh i already play like this i need a change! something to inspire me to play something different. besides the 0-1-3-4 pattern

  • this is the only guy that accualy helped me in any way possible i learned alot by listening to this guy if you bitch this guy cant teach anything your a dumbass.

  • you are awesome, i'd like to know what model of guitar you're using?

  • Wait...... what do you mean you people?..... lawl..jk.... anywho yeah keep up the great work man and don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise

    you're beast!.

  • buy new cam man

  • you sound like my lahey from trailer park boys :P

  • Thanks Bob keep doing what your doing it's helped me loads, I'll keep watching because you Rock!...;)

  • um... last i checked, harmonic minor was used in many other musical styles, not just in metal... (just pointing out)

but that was over 200 years ago, so never mind my opinion :/

  • hey do u play a game called star wars galaxeys u sound familar

  • Someone might have said this before, but let me just throw this out there. If you play a D instead of the D#, you then have the natural minor scale. Now, if you take the natural minor scale, and make the C a C#, you now have the B minor scale. Kinda cool the way scales work, eh?

  • how did you stay in the same key went you went up the one string and then came back down

  • cool didn't get it though :P

  • sounds a lil like elmer fudd ,, guitar rocks

  • oh man he teachs guitar he's leafs fan this guy is my hero thanks dude this helped out alot

  • Hay Bobbie, do you have any recommendations on scales to learn for metal and rock? Im stuck on what scales to learn and I know the A Pentatonic, D Harmonic Miner, and the Em/G (as my teacher called it) Pentatonic scales.

P.S. I bet the wife like the space the guitars take up :P

  • hi bob!

  • cool

  • Props to TheChewyWun. I totally agree. Props to bobby for the lessons.

  • piss on these negative attitudes, i appreciate all the help i can get thanks Bobby

  • You people baggin on this guy for taking the time to put up a video with tab should really take a freakin chillaxitive. Most people that are on youtube cruising for lesson videos are not advanced guitarists looking for truly advanced theory. If you are then you're in the wrong place. Give the guy credit for making the effort to put up a free lesson and stop nit picking what he's calling the scale, if you listen closely he tells you it's the harmonic minor scale 0:10. Truly listen, then post!

  • @TheChewyWun thank you!!! :-)

  • @BobbyCrispy No, thank you for sharing.

  • @TheChewyWun Agreed!!!! I'm just starting out and I watch a lot of Bobbys vids...They have been a huge help! Thanks Bobby!!! Keep 'em comming brother!

  • @TheChewyWun chillaxitive..NICE=D

  • @TheChewyWun Yee!! thank you for the intelligent response my musical friend.

  • Your a pretty chill dude, needless to say maybe, nice presentation skill's bro.

  • holy shit it's elmer fud!

  • Is his guitar tuned have a step down? cause I'm playing the notes exactly and it does not sound the same.

  • well it's not so heavy metal type of scale, it's more of a Yngwie Malmsteen shredding. but it's awesome, though! thanks man!

  • ang galing mu ^_^

  • That's not The Heavy Metal Scale dude. That's a harmonic minor. Any scale can be used when playing Metal and even other styles. Rather than going away from a blues scale you can use the harmonic minor with it and with other scales. In that way you can create your own signature and style of playing too. If you use the same scale over and over you end up sounding the same with every piece of music you write. You'll end up annoyingly repetitive.

  • it's just a harmonic minor but started from a wrong mode

  • Yeah I have a question :P

What kind of reforcer for your guitar do you use? (The box connected to your guitar)

Cuzz I try for so long to make my own songs, but with the kind that you got, that should be no problem at all :D

What kind is it ? :)

btw nice tutorial, that should be helpful as well ;)

  • hEY MAN YOU PLAY aWSOME!!! fUCK DAT dvrapant .....by the way how is the picking done on this scale.!!!

  • @imusic10001 he uses alternate picking...

  • @mark616crnjak Thanks bro.!

  • dude. theres no such scale

  • how i get my guitar to sound/tune like that? just got minetoday an cant get the right metal sound

  • where you doing arpeggios at 35 to 42 or were you playing the straight scale

  • wait, at 1:17 did you write the tab upside down, cause im pretty sure tuning goes like EADGBE not EBGDAE, or that could be me being retarded...

  • @ValorFrag uuh.. tabs are always written in that order o_o

  • @ValorFrag Guitar tabs are written with the highest string at the top and lowest string at the bottom, so, he didnt write it upside down.

  • similar to malmsteen

  • Nice leafs sticker :D

  • its in C sharp

  • thanks man very helpful

  • Very boring lesson.

  • ur guitar looks like a fender stratocaster

  • "hi im bob, from canada" that cracked me up xD

  • no ones gona get the big picture,. u cant just rush to the harmonic minor u got to go penetonic minor then major., then after that point u can start fuckin around with the modifications of the penatonic before you learn harmonic minor u should play around with natural minor,. ive been playing guitar for a long time., anyway hes got some information but the way he presents it should not be taken seriously

  • @BobbyCrispy

Great video. Good basics to give students the surge to learn Heavy metal with Harmonic Minor.

thanks for sharing the practical side. I enjoyed watching the video :)

  • @dvrapant ok dude, you really need to calm "the fuck" down, as you would say....music and guitar playing is supposed to be fun.....not a reason to blow your stack!!!!

  • @BobbyCrispy Sometimes when I play guitar, I release some anger I might have. BTW This video helped me ALOT! I've been playing for 5 years, and I havn't gotten a teacher yet. But idk, youtube is my teacher. :D
