@JoeJacari what the hell are you talking about. you said you didn't wanna go there, yet you still did and it make not one bit of sense. you're an idiot
Keith Carlock is so full of good sense, and of course his playing is second to none. But you're right larkydozer, he looks infact as if he hasn't had any sleep for at least a year. Must be all that touring.
in addition to the insight from these masters ( especially keith carlock ) i would say that for young drummers interested in timekeeping and groove i found that playing to recordings was a great way to learn how to play good time . Also when you play along with recordings you are theoretically playing with the best musicians on the planet . I always encourage young drummers to play with records .
Records are great, but never forget to play with a metronome. This will help to learn to subdivide the beat as well, thus increasing an overall understanding of time! Records can definitely teach a groove though.
Every drummer needs to know who Keith Carlock is....to be the ONLY drummer to record a full album with the Dan AND tour with them, THEN take Vinnie's stool half way through a Sting tour is a player that we should all be listening to.
Jim Hodder, the original drummer for Steely Dan played on all of the first two albums (including possibly their best record, Countdown To Ecstasy) and toured with them until 1974.
Keith Carlock is however, the only OTHER drummer to play a complete Dan record and tour.
Big hi-five to the correction. I completely forgot about Hodder. I guess ever since they started doing the musical chairs type studio work with their musicians I forgot about their early work.
I'm personally an Aja and Gaucho freak. But Countdown is also awesome.
Carlock is a good groove drummer. Those dark circles under his eyes always make him look like he has been up all night though.

i hope that lack of sleep is the issue cause the way he looks is that there might be kidney issues with him but i hope im wrong..

Keith almost always appears to have a case of mild black eyes. As if he's recovering from being punched out. Anyone else notice?

@larkydozer i read the reason he looks tired and goes thru weight gain/loss is bc of HEAVY touring

I love Aja and Gaucho. Countdown came out when I was 19 and I wore that one out. Everything they put out is stellar IMO.
Even though they quickly became primarily a studio musicians group... for me, I put the Dan up with the Beatles.
The overall body of work by them is second to none.

I get aural fatigue listening to that one. I think it's the drumming.
