let me correct one of her mistakes during speech. Chiese people always have their own right to choose their religion. Chinese Gov invest millions of dollars to Tibet every year to let people who live in Tibet have better social life. Chinese Gov freed slavery which was built many years ago by tibetan leaders.

Why don't you quit trolling, tutt99. She said that human rights concerns cannot end our other efforts with respect to China. We can't run their affairs for them; all we can do is press them where we think it will do some good, while we deal with all of the other challenges.

our lesson from japan during meiji was that a failure to understand and respond to the legitimate desires of rising powers dramatically grows the likelihood of conflict. we can do this without betraying taiwan (although it means our losing a hand to play here), which seems to be well on track for reintegration.

Did she refer to Tibetans as "Chinese"? Does that mean Tibet is recognized as part of China?

She also said the U.S. would press South Korea, Japan and Indonesia for cleaner economies, but she didn't say the U.S. would do the same in China.

Also, when she mentioned the six-party talks about North Korean nukes, she left Russia out. How are we to interpret that? The U.S. does not plan to work with Russia?

I think the overall view is that the problems faced right now are a truly global set of problems, and that it is logical to work on global solutions. Each country faces problems but if they isolate themselves at this critical time it would devastate everyone. I don't think Obama will be unfriendly with either Russia or China. He has said that the US and Russia have a special world responsibility for nuclear weapons safety.
