I own an eclipse rs and it may not be as fast as the mr2 even with a turbo but its got a huge hatch and i can take my bike places and other large objects. Mr2 for racing but the eclipse is great all around.
Im the owner of the Eclipse GST.. At the time the Eclipse was bone stock.. to the paper filter. The MR2 had intake and Exhaust and I think boost turned up a little.. I cant remember. I know have a 16G on the Eclipse with intake, exhaust and downpipe. Its about 80 hp more give or take. Turbo cars are fun but they dont like the 110 degree heat that Dallas has recently!
I will admit that a friend of mine has a heavily modded Eclipse with aftermarket turbo and such and it is pretty fast. But if you put the same money into an MR2, there is basically no comparison.
@XW1CKED666X I dunno. I get more compliments on my MR2 Turbo Widebody than I hear people give props to Eclipse owners. Now speed wise? I am sure there are more faster 4G63's out there than MR2s. They can make more power on such little money. Plus, we seen GSX make 7 seconds. MR2s I have yet to see one actually break 9's.
Both of these cars look amazing, but lets face it, MR2>GST lol, i ownd both a GST and MR2 Turbo, and lets face it stock for stock the MR2 will walk all over a GST any day of the week, iv now sold the GST and used the money to upgrade the deuce :)
You should show video of whats under your hoods before you race. I really don't buy that the Eclipse is a GST. And I'm thinking that the MR2 has a little extra under the hood. Seeing is believing....
damn its not always about what is faster. i own a mr2 myself. its about liking what you drive and enjoying it. yea its one hell of a thrill to have more power. that why personally i bought an mr2, style potent power plant with lots of room to mod, fun to drive, not everyone has them, and i have seen more mr2's fuck "super cars" in the street than most of the other main stream tuner cars. but all n all its preference and back ground.
That race from a dig at the end of the video was a bit disappointing. An Mr2 not being able to take FWD off the line is pretty bad, stock 3rd gen motors smoke everything quarter mile stock supra's skyline's etc. The only close race was the FD. Work on that launch, then post a rematch!

I find this video very hard to believe. You're saying in 2006 you came across a STOCK Eclipse GST AND a STOCK MR2? Not even a $60 boost controller? If this is true then this is very sad. Why does the MR2 have a sticker in the window if it's stock? Is he pretending to have upgrades? I bet the Eclipse is on 11psi and the MR2 is on about 18 or so. That would make this video make sense. I just looked at the video again and by the looks of it, that's a stock gen 2 (prob '91) mr2 turbo which makes 200 bhp. The only possible mod being exhaust which can't be seen clear enough to tell and woulden't matter anyway because any given exhaust is only gonna give another 10hp at the most anyway, that's only if it's de catted anyway.

The v6 swap is a big step if you're serious about it. Hope you can weld and know how to lay the engine out, otherwise you'll have to butcher the car and it'll only be an mr2 by profile, not by true layout anymore. Guy put a supra engine in his, the 2jz-gte, and it's now a front engine rear drive monster. Took him forever though.

from a roll the GSX is slower than the GS-T. Now from a dead stop the GSX could have launched sooner, but at the cost of a lower top end. The MR2 would have still won.
fyi a stock gst is slightly faster than a stock gsx(extra wieght). but when you make enough power to easily break the tires loose gsx ftw. and an mr2 should be slightly faster, not no fuckin 4 lengths tho learn to drive!

Launching alone the mr2 would have kill hat gst and if both were equally tuned the mr2 would have killed him in anyway BUT!!! a good driver in the gts would have scare the shit of the mr2 driver also take in mind this was kind of unfair atleast for me a gsx would have been a fair match.
unless you have driven an mr2 turbo, its hard to describe. It feels very solid, sooo smooth, but the engine is a little buzzy until the turbo spools behind you. Its amazing. You had better be used to mid engine handling if you have 91 or 92, as they altered the steering in front to make them more user friendly in 93 on.
i'm pretty sure I was in 2nd at the 40roll. Thats the sweet spot for both cars. Stock for stock the Eclipse has 10more hp and 14 more Tq than the MR2 but the MR2 is a good bit lighter. Both cars are 5 speed. I had an MR2 before the Eclipse and those gears on the MR2 were a lot easier to shift fast with than the Eclipse. I did run a couple totally stock 91 mr2s and the runs were very close. I would win one run and lose the other.
The '93 MR2s seem to have a little more oomph and had I had a intake and muffler on the car at the time, the race would have been extremely close. I say this because after I got intake and muffler on my car and ran those stock 91 mr2 turbos again, the race wasnt close anymore. I was pulling on those cars in every race
The 4G63 responds very well to bolt ons. Intake doesn't do much for an MR2. Exhaust mods are pretty sweet on them though. The 93 doesn't really have any more oomph than the 91 and 92s. They just have a way better tranny and LSD was an option. Anyways, these races are always fun since they're all pretty close all the way up until you start swapping turbos and changing VE.
Ok ok.... listen here. Before you get all offended. A GST stock has more power and torque than an MR2 stock... do the math. Then the next thing it comes down to is the driver. Now on my comment below. I did not say that it doesn't add power. I said it doesn't add REAL power. Real power comes from bored cylinders and turbos. Not bolt-on's. My point is that whoever was driving the GST... could not use that as an excuse... especially when he has a more pro-claimed sufficient car. That's all :D
Turbos are bolt ons, especially for DSM guys who have more options than a lot of other cars as far as bolt on turbos are concerned. I wasn't even close to being offended by the way, DSM's are nice. Anyways, 20+ rwhp is real power as far as I'm concerned. Sure, it's not a lot but it's noticeable, especially when you were stock before. Oh and the MR2 on average is 200lbs lighter, do the math.
Lets be honest here... you must have ragged the hell out of that 4G63 motor for a couple of years killing the performance of that car to get smoked by a MR2..... even if he does have an exhaust and muffler. Those bolt ons don't add any real power.
Actually. I just bought the car a month before that race. I bought it off an older asian guy that didnt even know where the turbo was on the car and didnt rag on it hard lol. I've always taken care of my car and the previous (one owner) owner did all the maintenance etc. Stock for stock a MR2 T will beat a GST. And an intake and muffler does free up 10-15hp on a turbo car. Not on a NA, but a turbo car for sure!
You probably don't own an MR2 so you wouldn't know but an exhaust does add power on the MR2 Turbo. The stock B-pipe actually narrows down to less than two inches. And a stock MR2 T will definitely take a stock GST.

Because they want a faster stock car. Toyota doesn't make their engines so they can handle 1000 hp, they make them strong and if that's what it happens to handle then that's just a plus. Just search for Lexus Na-T or Supra Na-T. The Lexus and non turbo Supra's have the 2JZGE, no T in there.

Yes, it is that great and they do add a turbo on the 2JZGE, the non turbo motor, and they achieve high numbers. Just so you know, most high powered Supras run only one big turbo, this includes the Na-T's. I don't think you've even checked Na-T yet. If you saw that you wouldn't be arguing. Yes, the 2JZGTE is the better engine but the "shitty motor" as you called it can also get you over 1000 HP. Just stop already, you know next to nothing about Toyota and their engines.

ive owned both an 91 turbo mr2, a 1g gsx eclipse and 95 gst eclipse, lovedddd the mr2 and would get another one in a heartbeat. 1g was fun as hell as well, 2g had much more problems though. mr2's kick ass in my opinion

That is incorrect, I had a 1998 GST which I bought brand new from the dealer, and all GST's do not have this cover on either side. Most car companies do not make vehicles with front bumpers that are not symetrical with the exception of the Evo, and that is only not symetrical because of the license plate frame, take that away and it is.
to fecemosis its not just about horsepower, but a well rounded car, weight, structure, I mean look at the sw20, stock Mid-Engine 220hp n can easily meet up with a standard 300hp vehicle. Although the sw20 is a bitch to drive especially on the turns, its like driving a huge go-cart.

damn its not always about what is faster. i own a mr2 myself. its about liking what you drive and enjoying it. yea its one hell of a thrill to have more power. that why personally i bought an mr2, style potent power plant with lots of room to mod, fun to drive, not everyone has them, and i have seen more mr2's fuck "super cars" in the street than most of the other main stream tuner cars. but all n all its preference and back ground.

That race from a dig at the end of the video was a bit disappointing. An Mr2 not being able to take FWD off the line is pretty bad, stock 3rd gen motors smoke everything quarter mile stock supra's skyline's etc. The only close race was the FD. Work on that launch, then post a rematch!

I find this video very hard to believe. You're saying in 2006 you came across a STOCK Eclipse GST AND a STOCK MR2? Not even a $60 boost controller? If this is true then this is very sad. Why does the MR2 have a sticker in the window if it's stock? Is he pretending to have upgrades? I bet the Eclipse is on 11psi and the MR2 is on about 18 or so. That would make this video make sense. I just looked at the video again and by the looks of it, that's a stock gen 2 (prob '91) mr2 turbo which makes 200 bhp. The only possible mod being exhaust which can't be seen clear enough to tell and woulden't matter anyway because any given exhaust is only gonna give another 10hp at the most anyway, that's only if it's de catted anyway.

The v6 swap is a big step if you're serious about it. Hope you can weld and know how to lay the engine out, otherwise you'll have to butcher the car and it'll only be an mr2 by profile, not by true layout anymore. Guy put a supra engine in his, the 2jz-gte, and it's now a front engine rear drive monster. Took him forever though.

unless you have driven an mr2 turbo, its hard to describe. It feels very solid, sooo smooth, but the engine is a little buzzy until the turbo spools behind you. Its amazing. You had better be used to mid engine handling if you have 91 or 92, as they altered the steering in front to make them more user friendly in 93 on.

i'm pretty sure I was in 2nd at the 40roll. Thats the sweet spot for both cars. Stock for stock the Eclipse has 10more hp and 14 more Tq than the MR2 but the MR2 is a good bit lighter. Both cars are 5 speed. I had an MR2 before the Eclipse and those gears on the MR2 were a lot easier to shift fast with than the Eclipse. I did run a couple totally stock 91 mr2s and the runs were very close. I would win one run and lose the other.

The '93 MR2s seem to have a little more oomph and had I had a intake and muffler on the car at the time, the race would have been extremely close. I say this because after I got intake and muffler on my car and ran those stock 91 mr2 turbos again, the race wasnt close anymore. I was pulling on those cars in every race

The 4G63 responds very well to bolt ons. Intake doesn't do much for an MR2. Exhaust mods are pretty sweet on them though. The 93 doesn't really have any more oomph than the 91 and 92s. They just have a way better tranny and LSD was an option. Anyways, these races are always fun since they're all pretty close all the way up until you start swapping turbos and changing VE.

Ok ok.... listen here. Before you get all offended. A GST stock has more power and torque than an MR2 stock... do the math. Then the next thing it comes down to is the driver. Now on my comment below. I did not say that it doesn't add power. I said it doesn't add REAL power. Real power comes from bored cylinders and turbos. Not bolt-on's. My point is that whoever was driving the GST... could not use that as an excuse... especially when he has a more pro-claimed sufficient car. That's all :D

Turbos are bolt ons, especially for DSM guys who have more options than a lot of other cars as far as bolt on turbos are concerned. I wasn't even close to being offended by the way, DSM's are nice. Anyways, 20+ rwhp is real power as far as I'm concerned. Sure, it's not a lot but it's noticeable, especially when you were stock before. Oh and the MR2 on average is 200lbs lighter, do the math.

Actually. I just bought the car a month before that race. I bought it off an older asian guy that didnt even know where the turbo was on the car and didnt rag on it hard lol. I've always taken care of my car and the previous (one owner) owner did all the maintenance etc. Stock for stock a MR2 T will beat a GST. And an intake and muffler does free up 10-15hp on a turbo car. Not on a NA, but a turbo car for sure!

nope, it's not a dsm, plus there are plenty of 6 bolt gsx's which can destroy your pretty little lexus, and again yea it's the 2jz-ge, which was a shitty engine compared to the 2jz-gte. if you haven't already reinforced your internals you might want to. And that's if the internals are exactly the same as the ones in the 2jz-g3 motor in the supra. Plus i never had anything against lexus until you came rambling your mouth about dsm's(most sucked, but not all)

again, the only engine which can withstand that amount of hp is the 2jz-gte, not the 2jz-gt, which is what the lexus's have. And if those engines could hanlde 1000 hp then why would they make the 2jz-gtE for the turbo supra?

Because they want a faster stock car. Toyota doesn't make their engines so they can handle 1000 hp, they make them strong and if that's what it happens to handle then that's just a plus. Just search for Lexus Na-T or Supra Na-T. The Lexus and non turbo Supra's have the 2JZGE, no T in there.

wow got my letters mixed up, it doesn't matter that the lexus has the 2jz-ge, it's not a "supra engine" which can handle the 1000+ hp. What i'm trying to get at is if the 2jz-ge engine is so great then why not add a twin turbo set up for that instead of the better engine 2jz-gte? Cause the ge engine was for economical purposes only.

Yes, it is that great and they do add a turbo on the 2JZGE, the non turbo motor, and they achieve high numbers. Just so you know, most high powered Supras run only one big turbo, this includes the Na-T's. I don't think you've even checked Na-T yet. If you saw that you wouldn't be arguing. Yes, the 2JZGTE is the better engine but the "shitty motor" as you called it can also get you over 1000 HP. Just stop already, you know next to nothing about Toyota and their engines.

to me that's still not toyota, lexus is a great company, but they don't use any toyota engines or transmissions anymore. It's like saying aston martin is a ford, just because ford owned it. And I just don't like the non turbo 2jz that's all, plus they don't make a great amount of tq either, but yea they make big hp, and i will always love supras, but that's in the past.

They do still use Toyota engines and transmissions. Toyota doesn't just own them like they own part of Subaru or Ford owned Aston Martin because they use different engines and practically aren't involved. Meanwhile, Toyota and Lexus are basically the same company because everything is done in house, as well as Scion now. It's just that they use a different name, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. They do make a lot of torque you just don't want to listen.

Uhh...LEXUS is a State Side Company...you wont find it out side the US...the Lexus IS300 in the States is called the Toyota Altezza everywhere else...the Toyota Soarer is called the Lexus IS350 (2gz engines in both) IT'S THE SAME COMPANY...That's like trying to say that Acura and Honda are two different companies...again...Acura = ONLY sold in the USA...same company = same company

ive owned both an 91 turbo mr2, a 1g gsx eclipse and 95 gst eclipse, lovedddd the mr2 and would get another one in a heartbeat. 1g was fun as hell as well, 2g had much more problems though. mr2's kick ass in my opinion

you probably had the 7 bolt gst, the 6 bolt ones had no problems, that's why a lot of people are doing swaps to get the 6 bolt now.

You're half right. The intercooler is on the OTHER side, the passenger side. Which in the video doesn't appear to have the cover.
All Eclipses, turbo or not, have the cover on the driver's side.

That is incorrect, I had a 1998 GST which I bought brand new from the dealer, and all GST's do not have this cover on either side. Most car companies do not make vehicles with front bumpers that are not symetrical with the exception of the Evo, and that is only not symetrical because of the license plate frame, take that away and it is.

to fecemosis its not just about horsepower, but a well rounded car, weight, structure, I mean look at the sw20, stock Mid-Engine 220hp n can easily meet up with a standard 300hp vehicle. Although the sw20 is a bitch to drive especially on the turns, its like driving a huge go-cart.
