I completely love this Piano Concerto. It has a mix of so many qualities, just unbelievable. If you would like to listen to another great composer YouTube the Great Great Grandfather in Composition of Peter I. Tchaikovsky:
The complaints about the woodwinds are understandable. Toscanini's woodwinds were not always perfectly in tune. I have a recording of the NBC Symphony Orchestra playing Siegfried's Funeral Music in which you can hear him groan as they play a chord out of tune.
For the people who say, "Go and read the score", the piece can be played perfectly to the score but still sound 'off to some people'. It is down to personal taste and anyone can tell the difference. If you listen to the eleventh piano note, for example, the versions I enjoy most are where it is slightly delayed. It is as subtle and as simple as that. It's not 'wrong' just different and everyone should just enjoy the beautiful music. Peace
The woodwinds aren't off. I have the full score of the concerto, and I play the concerto myself. I know the parts very well, and it's all fine. It's a difficult passage for the pianist to sound fine without it getting disoriented-- but people try to force their opinions and seem highly intelligent.. get over it, you aren't, they play it perfect, and very nice phrasing there anyway.
Guys can't you understand that the woodwinds weren't off?! Go and read the score! Its just like that... Its wrote like that. Or go and watch another video of this same music. Its just like that. The woodwinds are right!

The timbre of the woodwinds is different...not necessarly wrong...maybe they used a different orchestration

Too beautiful but too fast!.Sounds too classical and old, that makes this version special.A bit like an old russian children tale.

oh, and also, the woodwinds just suck 'cause they are terribly off-rhythm.
