I remember being a gymnast back during this time watching with my mom during winter break and knowing that Cohen was the one to root for and just being taken away by this skaters talent.
Her triple flip jump was done with an outside edge takeoff, essentially making it a triple Lutz. Given that, she essentially did 3 triple Lutz jumps in this program and 2 triple Salchows. There are no triple loops or triple toe loops. I don't think she should have gotten credit for repeating the triple Lutz 3 times. Technically, in terms of the triple jumps, this was a very unbalanced program and it was skated with very little speed in some sections.
@indiatree do you know how many ladies flutz or lip? sasha cohen has a frightful flutz, not to mention her falls. even irina slightly flutzes. shizuka was the rightful winner for this night.
@callasalive I understand what you are saying. I don't have anything against Arakawa's gold medal. She was much better than the Cohen, etc. But what I mean, is that Arakawa doesn't even TRY to do the flip on the inside edge. She just blatantly and deeply pushes the blade to the outside edge and still calls it a flip. In reality, it is a pure Lutz. You are not supposed to be able to do a jump more than twice in the program. And she is doing 3 Lutzes here and getting credit.
@indiatree Not a lot of people can do a flip on the inside edge. And another thing, that rule wasn't inforced until two seasons after. She didn't say anything about calling it a flip. And she can't purposely make a mistake. It's just like me saying that I am trying to do a flip off the inside, but I accidently did lutz. You can't blame her for doing a jump that she doesn't mean to make a mistake on.
@indiatree taking off on an outside edge while doing a flip does NOT make it a lutz!!!! flips' entrance has the 3 turns, which allows half revolution pre-rotate to create momentum for taking off. Lutz jumps doesn't have this luxury, you have to pre-rotate with your arms instead.
@troy0515 You make an interesting point, but I am not so sure about that. She did that jump the same way during one of the lead up competitions to the 2006 Olympics. During that competition (I forget which one) Paul Wylie was doing the live comentary on TV, and he said that her flip looked like a Lutz. Again, you may be right, but I don't know.
She is a great jumper and I love her so much, and she's very graceful, but her step sequence is kinda sluggish. It's a great LP but I like her 2004 world championship LP better, where she did a 3Lz-3T-2Lo and a 3S-3T too. But great skater overall.
@janzei I completely agree with you that Shizuka's footwork was a bit sluggish, but her consistency has been a big improvement over Sasha's who was sloppy in her long program. The trade-off was that Sasha did a better short program than the long program, and sadly, the same happened to Irina who wasn't usually sloppy in her long program. I don't know if it was because of the stress of competing.
@anne91276 Agreed. After the short, I was thinking that it would be a battle between Irina and Shizuka to take gold and silver and Sasha would be 3rd. Even though Sasha, also a very great skater, was 1st in the short, i kinda knew that she would not win gold because of her inconsistency and that she hardly ever made a clean program in the long. I love Sasha but she's like, good at everything except jumping, which is the most important element, for me. And that's what hurt her scores.
@peanutmmss entry into spins were different for the first two and the other two were in two different kinds of combination spins. I think she just likes the positions- she does it well- it's kind of one of her signature type moves... but she did do it four times in the program (a layback spin combo would have been awesome!) but either way she rocks! :-)
@UtsukushiiMakeup yeah i mean there's not much negative to say about her. i just would've liked to see more variety, i guess those aren't my favorite spins!
@peanutmmss me too! I love her layback! yeah the donut spin or whatever isn't very attractive in my opinion, kind like the sasha spiral... it's kind of awkward- interesting, but awkward
@UtsukushiiMakeup haha you mean the one wear she kinda lifts her leg up like she's proudly showing us her crotch?! that's kinda ugly, but i love Sasha!
That spiral was absolutely stunning. Not only were her edges extraordinarily strong but the pattern was humungous (notice how she goes way out by the boards). She's such an exceptional skater.
I love this but I like her 2004 world champ long program better, she had 3Lz-3T-2Lo and a 3S-3Lo back then. This was kinda safe but clean, but u can't blame her, she was here for the gold,
Shame on Japanese! Yuna is such a great role model for all youngsters all around the world. Everyone , except some foolish perverted Japanese, knows Yuna is the most favorite skater with world best skating and wonderful personality. Yuna is such a beautiful young lady on and off the ice. She now is a treasure we cherish not only in Korean but all over the world. God bless Yuna & protect her. All wrong videoclips falsely attacking Yuna should be deleted right now!!!
It was a very good program. Was it the best Olympic gold program? No. I wish she wasn't so sluggish-looking (she's not a fast rabbit in her movements) but she has mastered the jump mechanics and she is SMOOTH.
Now we can understand that was only a start of her beautiful skating world. She has BEEN polishing her skating year after year since the Olimpic. She still can show her best on 2011's performance. It's amazing!! I don't know such a diligent and tough and long-lasting and almost a stoic skater. Just deserves Gold.
I agree that this is a "weaker“ performance compared to Tara's, Sarah's and Yuna's. But it is also the gold medal performance at that Stadium at that moment. I like Shizuka's programs(not only this one) so much... but I have to say, I am a little disappointed we didn't see any 3-3 here... her Turandot in 2004 WC is technically better.
Well, during 2006, the IJS was a new system. So during that time, it would be a gold medal performance. The game changed after torino and vancouver. So in your point of view it would be a weak competition, but considered a strong one back then. So I wouldn't say it's a not a gold medal performance since it is how it is back then. And plus if you were to compete against her, you'd be the weak one, not them. BTW if you're going to call someone weak, lets see you try it.
@filipinoICEsk8ter Kudos, Well said! We can't compare 2006 to 2010 winter games. Both games has pressure but different in so many ways. Sasha the most favorite to win made some mistakes and shizuka skates right after just needed a clean program. (note that Japan is zero medal so far) she did what she came to do and that is bring home an Olympic Gold. She's a true World and Olympics CHAMPION!
@tresdestange Arakawa was the last person I'd thought would win that year cuz I was looking at Slutskaya in the 2005 GPF. But it was awesome to see Arakawa win. I've skated with her before when Worlds was in LA, and she is just a special beautiful skater. She had natural flow when jumping and skating. I wish she would compete again.
Make that 4 subpar camels and donut spin. Again, kudos for consistency. But where are the highs and lows of the program to go with the music? The fast and the slow? Very monotone pace. One speed. I think I've seen her skate better than this. I'm sorry, but yaaaaaaaaawn.
At the time, I was very happy for the dark horse Arakawa to win here. Comparing the programs of Arakawa, Slutskaya, and Cohen now, Cohen's stands out by far. Clean, but uninspiring. Three subpar camels and donut spins, very boring. Again, where is the program!? Expression of music? Drama? Hunched positions on jump landings. Not really pristine here, going through the motions. As a sport, Cohen didn't win the LP, though she shoulda had at least a 10 pt lead after the short, and won overall. Sad..
Her fluidity on the ice is incredible. And the way she uses her arms is just beautiful. I wish moire of the Japanese skaters would take a page from her playbook.
I've been watching figure skating since Dorothy Hamill's days and I have to say Shizuka is quite possibly the most graceful skater I have ever seen. And NO ONE does a better Ina Bauer.
@okyunga@yes you fucking are a TROLL! STOP KIM YUNA fanboyism!!! I know you're a kim yuna fanboy but come on. Stop searching Japanese skaters on youtube and hating them. Go get a life BITCH!
Great program. Doubled the loop, but it's alright. She skates with great speed and grace. She has great flexibility especially on that ina bauer and all those doughnuts.
With all due respect to Mao Asada and the other Japanese skaters, Arakawa's victory must have felt incredibly satisfying- especially since she had been trailing behind many young rivals all season. I wanted Sasha Cohen to win the gold, but I was impressed by Arakawa's beautiful skating and her humility. She's one of the most graceful skaters I've ever seen.
@FuckerYuna I checked. In the 2005-06 season, she won the Gran Prix Final and Eric Bompard. She also was in 2nd Place in the Junior Championship, Cup of China, and the All-Japan. She didn't have a single Bronze or below that year. I think she had a decent chance. Not 100% sure but that was certainly a major time in her career.
I woke up early and saw this when I was still back home in Japan. It was such an inspiration to watch and she was the center of attention in the country for a while... Since Midori Ito Japan has had some great skaters and the Japanese figure skating team is continuing to grow. Miki Ando rose to the occasion after Torino, particularly very recently, Mao Asada won a Silver four years later in Vancouver, and there are high hopes for Kanako Murakami. I have a lot of faith in Japan in Figure Skating!
I'm proud to say I was there. As a spectator there was no commentary from the media--just what we could see in front of us. We jumped to our feet after that performance and after the free skate was over it was evident that she had won.
This is a very beautiful performance that had it all. Athleticism and great artistic merits on top of that. What a deserving gold medal winner and it was a lovely pleasure to see her skate well here.
she seems a bit heavy to me. She is frequently commented as "gorgeous", but I can't see that in her perfomance. Carolina is by far more gorgeous and graceful, as for me. Ina bauer is the only exciting element here, but 1 element can't make full impression.
@ZenderMilan Shizuka is gorgeous and graceful, Carolina is graceful. The problem with Kostner is when she jumps she lands on her ass. Kostner landed on her ass three or four times during her long program in Vancouver. The same thing in Torino for Carolina; landed on her ass, how many times I lost count...
People should not compare this program to current programs. It's like comparing Shizuka to peggy back then. The sports is changing drastically. Skaters are being more aggressive with the jumps and having different kind of techniques. Also the pressure during Torino Games is different from Vancouver so If Shizuka skated on the 2010 games she should have done this program differently to catch up. Here she doesn't need to, all she need is a CLEAN to secure her country a Medal.
I am so happy for her. Even though I am a huge sasha cohen fan, she did not have a clean program :(
Shizuka did and more importantly, she basically lifted her whole country. It was soo beautiful to see her fellow teammates hold her up. Japan was soo proud of her! the only medal received for japan in the 2006 olympics and it was gold! <3 great job!!
What was really good about this performance was that she brought originality in her program. Many fig skaters, including Nagasu, Kim, and Hanyu begin to include laybacks. It was especially clear for Yuna that she copied Arakawa's bc she start doing it right after Arakawa's performance. I'm not saying that they are copy cats, I'm just mentioning that's how much Arakawa's performance inspired next generation :)
@yi81 haha that's true. I LOVE arakawa's laybacks. That move and sasha cohen's spial sequences are two of the most beautiful things ive seen in figure skating. such talent. im was so happy for her. :)
@yi81 yuna is not a copycat. if you say that bielmann spin. every single skater copied that spin?? there is no such thing as copying. and shizuka arakawa's laybacks are better than yuna's.
I said that "I'M NOT SAYING that they'(including Yuna) are copy cats"
But it was obivous that she included the laybacks b/c ppl loved it when arakawa did at Torino Olympics and she never did laybacks before then. It's not a bad thing at all to be influenced by one of the greatest skaters like Arakawa.
@chuhboemember6 Nope, not even close. Yuna totally blows this away, especially in tech content, but in artistry still. An even with Shizuka's "nice" ina bauer, why does she do the same donut spin 4 times??? 2 is enough, 4 is monotonous. Please don't overrate this performance to downgrade Yuna's. Shizuka merely had to skate clean to overcome 2 badly skated performances. Yuna blew away Mao, Joannie, and Mirai- all of whose tech content destroys Shizuka's competition. But nice try. ;)
@2ndAveLine why do you have to be such a bitch? people skated differently in 2006 as opposed to 2010. Shizuka did amazing, and many skaters repeat difficult spins to gain more points. her program was solid, and she won the GOLD for a reason.
I do remember this moment, I was at home early morning of another busy day. it was a live and I was watching without expectation but I noticed tears in my eyes when her perforamnce done. It was great, beautiful and still touching my heart.

ZenderMilan 11 months ago
@ZenderMilan Shizuka is gorgeous and graceful, Carolina is graceful. The problem with Kostner is when she jumps she lands on her ass. Kostner landed on her ass three or four times during her long program in Vancouver. The same thing in Torino for Carolina; landed on her ass, how many times I lost count...

What was the name of the other japanese girl that was here at the 2006 olympics that performed before Sasha?
dopefetish 1 year ago
People should not compare this program to current programs. It's like comparing Shizuka to peggy back then. The sports is changing drastically. Skaters are being more aggressive with the jumps and having different kind of techniques. Also the pressure during Torino Games is different from Vancouver so If Shizuka skated on the 2010 games she should have done this program differently to catch up. Here she doesn't need to, all she need is a CLEAN to secure her country a Medal.

That was so good but if you think about it, that gold medal performance would have been 6th place in the 2010 olympics, behind Mirai Nagasu.

oesdoob 1 year ago
@yi81 yuna is not a copycat. if you say that bielmann spin. every single skater copied that spin?? there is no such thing as copying. and shizuka arakawa's laybacks are better than yuna's.
sumimimi0 1 year ago 3
@sumimimi0

@chuhboemember6 are you serious... i love shizuka alot but to say this performance was better than yuna's olympic performance is pretty ridiculous
iimissdramaticii 1 year ago
@iimissdramaticii youre right....
koshersterling 1 year ago
@chuhboemember6 Nope, not even close. Yuna totally blows this away, especially in tech content, but in artistry still. An even with Shizuka's "nice" ina bauer, why does she do the same donut spin 4 times??? 2 is enough, 4 is monotonous. Please don't overrate this performance to downgrade Yuna's. Shizuka merely had to skate clean to overcome 2 badly skated performances. Yuna blew away Mao, Joannie, and Mirai- all of whose tech content destroys Shizuka's competition. But nice try. ;)
2ndAveLine 11 months ago
@2ndAveLine why do you have to be such a bitch? people skated differently in 2006 as opposed to 2010. Shizuka did amazing, and many skaters repeat difficult spins to gain more points. her program was solid, and she won the GOLD for a reason.
