  • The things they don't factor into these reviews are base price, price to repair and insure. I looked into buying the GTI and the SI before purchasing my SS. Those two were just far too much money. The GTI was almost 7k more than the Cobalt and the price to insure it was outrageous. And the price of replacement parts for any German car is crazy. Same for the SI (minus replacing parts). I like both cars, but best bang for your buck is the Cobalt.

  • @leirocks1 well the TC guy is a friend of mine and we raced many times, we even swaped cars to se if it was the driver but it was about the same result. The scion is quite heavy in comparison with a little plastic paneled twin cam.

  • @baseballmanrg But not at all, your price will rocket with aftermarket or TRD parts, the GTI has the greatest top end but the Civic Si has the quickest 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds. Tc was in the mid to high 6's. But the 8k redline in the Si is the highest reving engine in group, most redline at 6k to 6.5k (gross).

  • The TC is crap - I cannot think of a worse sport compact. It is slow (especially without the supercharger), handles poorly and has a horrible interior. It is the joke of the sport compact world.

  • They made a big mistake in the video. The Tc they messed up on, the shift knob they used was for automatic tc's and they only put a super charger in but no other TRD parts. so of course the car didnt perform well because none of the stock parts could perform with the TRD engine. If they put all the parts in, this car would be #1

  • I own a corolla xrs 09 and it sucks when it comes to performance ! It's just a good car ! I did some track days with it and it sucks more........ my AE86 is still a way better car than that ! V6 engine, MR, RWD or 4WD = Real sport car ! Go check the Corolla APR GT ( Super GT ) Now thats a HOT car ;)

  • @JoshChadwick doughtful, becuase yes the interior is cheap, but the one thing that was not made cheaply was the motor, stock motors are good for 500hp plus, which leads me to beleive that the motors will last the longest in these cars

  • @JoshChadwick 500 is not bs, stage 6 kits run i think 450whp, and a twin charge kit runs ~400whp, so 500 on a stock motor is not hard to fathom, so i think the bolt is the best to mod because you have a good platform and a lot of "room" to upgrade

  • I will 2nd the winning decision. I miss my 06 MKV GTI 6 speed manual in white. That was the most fun car I've ever owned. Too bad my wife hated it and I bought it without telling her. Short lived glory.

  • The Civic Si needs a K24. Even an NA one would be ok because it would get more tourqe and at 100hp per liter they might get 240hp though even 220 would be ok. Once you put bolt ons it would get 30more hp so there you go

  • Bolt ons will not give you 30 HP on a K24. An intake might be 4-5, an exhaust 6-7, and headers maybe 3-5. You're looking at about 13-20, and 20 would be on a GOOD day.

  • Anyone who doubts the GTI should first drive it and then talk. I had my doubts too because the GTI doesnt look the best on paper. Once you're inside however it just feels like a well engineered German car. The SI engine sounds like it has 400hp but in reality a large SUV would probably smoke it. GTI should not be in this comparison the SI/TC/SS are all plastic and for 16 yr olds who own all four Fast and the Furious dvds

  • its obvious that you have no clue what you are talking about bc you sound like youre repeating what your dad told you. cheaper VWs like Jettas and Beetles are assembled in Mexico and sometimes have electrical problems but never engine. Hondas are very reliable bc its simple engineering nothing advanced. Honda wont have dual clutch trans for another 5 yrs probably. The GTI is recommended (in every single magazine) and once again is in 10 best cars its just a fact im sorry not just my opinion

  • what i say is because i read it, and yes honda will have dual clutch eventualy, but is not necesary at this moment, gti's are cheap too, dont care what kind of problem is either electrical, motor or transmision still is a car not relaible regardless from where it was made, hondas are where ever they come from.

  • ok whats your point? Hyundai is more reliable than Mercedes too. a 1997 civic is probably more reliable than a 2009 Porsche i guarantee you that. Japanese cars are just a cheaper version of German cars. Lexus ISF is just a wannabe M3. Infiniti G its just a wannabe bmw 3series. a german car will always be more expensive than japanese car even if it has less power. and GTI is not cheap compared to a Civic its at minimum a 5k difference which is alot when youre talking about this price range

  • please dont say "V-tech" that is so annyoing, Vtech is a freaking electronic company that makes phones and toys for babies. its Vtec, plain and simple. and the Si has i-Vtec way different than good old Vtec last time i read. but what i dont understand is why did a 1.8l Vtec engine produce more than 100hp/l in the US market when i-Vtec doesnt? they have the 2.0l 224hp type r JDM civic, bring that over here, and put it against these cars. no doubt it would kill. this coming from a tC owner too.

  • Hmmm, Just bought my TRD Supercharger for $1900 and installed it myself. Couldn't be happier with it. And just to correct Terrel, SC tC =200 WHEEL horsepower thats like 225-230 to the flywheel.

  • yeah apparently toyota underrated the superchargers power.but $1900 is good, should've saved up more for a turbo, many have had problems with the S/C, some have gone through 3 S/C's.

  • 5kmi after I installed the sc my tranny blew. It happened to be factory defects that caught up with it at 46kmi. They told me if I went turbo it would have cost me $5225 for the new tranny. Since I went sc and even installed it myself they still covered it under powertrain warranty. Ended up paying $100 for them to install a fidanza flywheel and stage 2 clutch while they were in there and $0 for the new tranny and it's install. Pretty happy I went s/c. Warranties save lives.

  • the supercharger was optional, and they probably only installed the trd supedcharger on the tc so the car it self wouldn't be underpowered for this test with these cars that put out around 200 hp. a stock tc is 160 hp

  • I cant believe they had the tC last. I own one, the gear ratio sucks yes. But the braking and handling are great I think. I have driven only the SS cobalt. Its a nice car with a very peppy engine. I just dont like chevy, super cheap and super unreliable. I cant say anything about the GTI or the SI. But I truly think they hammered the tC a little. Its a great car.

    SI is high revving so it does not need torque to be fast. It has a race-driven engine and not a econo sh*tbox Camry engine. It uses gearing and high rpm power to be fast.

    I have driven an SI. An SI r*pes TC all day long. You don not have to go far and look at how even a supercharged TC gets r*ped by a RSX-S with only intake/exhaust.

  • If you want to look at amazing Toyota sport compact, look at 2ZZ-GE Celica GTS and Corolla XRS. Both of these cars r*pe the TC all day long with extremely light weight (2550 - 2650 lbs), 6 speed manuals and 180 HP high-revving engines and 8400 rpm redlines.

  • What about the MAZDASPEED3??? WTF? $23k LOADED, 263 HP and 280 ft-lbs torque and not mentioned? How much is the GTI loaded? GTI sounds expensive but has best tranny. MPG=28-30 for MS3. Cobalt feels cheap, Honda feels weird and sterile design like Star Trek. Overall for the money, MS3!

  • I own a 07 Si. I think All of these cars are great except for the TC. The way I look at it is that SI is quality, SS is performance and GTI is a little bit of both.

    They shouldeve js done the test with a stock colbalt and vw to the si and tc. tC isnt meant for racing right out of the factory, other cars are somewhat tuned for racing, like the si,gti and ss colbat. kinda dumb comparing a plain tc with only a s/c with no tuned suspensions to other "tuned" factory cars.
