  • I sure wish I was there to join the fun. I spent many a years working in Alabama and loved it, but always had trouble finding pickers for a jam session...must have been looking in the wrong places..lol.....best wishes from almost heaven West Virginia...

  • Hello Ron,

Pickin is still alive and well in Alabama, but you do have to know where to look

  • That same music festival is this coming weekend, but I can't go

  • My uncle was in a bluegrass band. They played for President Roosevelt back in the day.

  • I've read about your Uncle. He was from Skyline Farms wasn't he?

  • He was from the Wininger area, near Skyline.

  • Its becoming rare to find a trad band in Ireland aswell... everyone wants to be a rockstar :(

  • that looked like a fun time. I got to experience some of that when i was living in Missouri. The banjos sound especially awesome to me. That kid looked like he was doing a pretty good job.

  • Everyone was having a very good time and the youngster was terrific

  • enjoyed the music not what we are used to hearing over here Richard made a nice change

got the old foot tapping :-)

  • Alabama bluegrass music is hard to beat

  • The kid was very good. Thanks. The SAT dish shows how remote this area is. The gov needed a quite area so they chose here. The dish and land was sold off by the gov several years ago and now it is a place where country folk gather and have some fun. the dish is huge, at least 50 feet dia

  • Don't know if you remember me, we used to talk when youtube was new. My family is from East Central TN. My Uncle says that the tune from "Great Speckled Bird" was theirs, but back in the ol' days they all shared tunes and changed the words...et...Honky Tonk Woman.

I should post video of Uncle Bud ( Dan Campbell) who walked away from th Opry in the 40's.

    All My Best,

    Ken

  • Hello Ken, certainly I remember you. Good to hear from you again. That was in the days before copyright was much thought of I guess. Many of the old songs were adaptations of music brought from Europe I suppose too. Yes please do post a video of uncle Bud, I would like to see it. just about every area of the South had some one connected to the opry fro the early days.

  • We had an old boy here "jughead" who appeared on the opry and his fame was from flapping his ears with his fingers and carrying a tune that way. The Louvin Brothers were also local boys, their real last name was Loudermilk.

  • Great music! That little banjo boy hangs right in there with the bigger fellas. I imagine some good food to go with the good tunes at a gathering like that. Thanks for sharing the good life.

  • There were several youngsters there playing great music. They have grown up with the music and I suppose it comes natural to them. Food? yes BBQ, catfish, homemade ice cream, etc.

  • Great video. Something fresh and new compared to most of the other stuff that I see on the tube. Keep making the videos and we will all keep watching.

  • Thanks. This is such a great medium, it is really a shame much of it is wasted. I just video what interest me at the time. I'm having a little problem with my audio when it gets uploaded and encoded, I'm going to try to improve that today

  • What fun! I think I remember you taking on a trip like this before. I love it!!!

  • Yes I go around sometimes to local picker gatherings. TThe shame of it is I can't show the true flavor of these gatherings through the video. There are some great country folks young and old at these gatherings

  • There is a story behind that sat dish. The government picked this most rural location to build that dish many years ago, it became outdated and was sold off to the public. Now country folks gather at the dish location for their festivals. A tin roof shack has been built all the way around the dish base and is used for an outdoor kitchen. Quite a contrast I'd say.

  • 。。。good morning messabout, tnx a lot for contributing this masterpiece of Dixi.

It really gave me a good start at 05:30 on a cold and grey morning here.

    best wishes,

  • Glad to start your day off right Moreno. It was very pleasant here today, a little overcast but warm. I have some more that I filmed today that I will try to upload soon.
