Even though I expected there to be a suspension (especially since it was Cooke), it was fair since Richards wasn't suspended either. lol, just rewatched the Cooke/Savard hit and the contact happens ABOVE THE NUMBER ON COOKE'S SHOULDER! That means that it wasn't even upper arm, it was a COMPLETE SHOULDER CHECK. whether a player admits it or not, every time they check another player they do it with the intention of causing enough pain so that player is too intimidated to play his game. they dont hit each other with the idea of trolls like you whining about how the game is too rough. the are trying to scare an opponent into not wanting to compete against them. sometimes when you are as small as savard you get hurt.

the cooke hit is no comparison to the richards hit. if savard wasnt the size of a teenager and that was a normal sized player it would have been a perfectly "clean" shoulder to shoulder hit. considering cooke is already taller than savard and savard was skating with his head down not even looking up ice he went for the hit and got his head. nothing he can do except not hit him, but this is hockey not soccer. richards jumped with his elbow into a much taller player. no comparison.

No, the Cooke hit was a couple days before the GM meeting. And I think everyone, even Pens fans, were extremely surprised that there was no suspension (including those that didn't think the hit was dirty). I think the fact that they DIDN'T suspend someone like Cooke for that hit should tell everyone that the league feels 100% that the hit was legal according to the NHL rulebook.

No, what really set the tone this year was them not suspending Richards for his knockout blow to Booth back in October. That is the sole reason Cooke was not suspended, believe me. And I have to agree with the league here...they did the right thing by not contradicting themselves. I mean, he's certainly not the kind of player that is going to get a break from the league, so they must have had very good reason to not suspend him, know what I mean?

What I meant was with these kinds of hits, you're walking a thin line between legal and illegal (And possibly being suspended). Therefore at the time of the hit, it was 100% legal. And it wasn't intent to injure, Savard had the puck for less than 1 tenth of a second; in less than 0.1 seconds Cooke made the decision to hit a man who was taking a shot on net. The same thing any defensively responsible player does until the rule change.
