  • This is being a right bitch to me!! Im trying to put it in Drop A# buut my guitar isnt having none of it!! Im using beefy slinkys 11. - 54. And i cant level out the bridge at all!! :'( -3

  • @ProtoTypeMunkey eesh.. drop A# on a 6 string. You kids. I spoke to pin from Sikth who assured me he used to go to G with a 52 on the top, I can't see it myself but hey. What are you finding the bridge is doing, sticking up or diving down?

  • @ProtoTypeMunkey I was having that problem too. I used part one of this video and The Frauda Floyd Rose video after you re-string it. It worked for me, hope it does for you! By the way thanks dimert for the helpful videos!

  • One of the GREATEST instructional videos I have ever watched on Ebay!!! Was scared as hell to attempt this process myself, but thanks to you everything went smoothly!!! THANKS A BUNCH!!!!! \m/

  • @ProgPowerGenius rock on man!

  • You Be A Boss

  • @xxxXCarlisleXxxx plz thx

  • hey there dude, what if I have 09 strings on and I want to put some 011 for lower tuning? i actually intend to put a 060 custom on the top for a tight playing, and the rest off a 011 kit, would that be hard?

  • @HayerXz Nah sounds fine to me, just adjust the bridge accordingly and make sure you pull all the slack out of the strings. What are you tuning to for a 60 on top? :)

  • thanks man :D

  • when i tune 1 string, the other strings goes out of tune, what should i do?

  • @dimert they are pulling out of the machine head feeds but I figured out what I was doing wrong. I wasn't doing the under/over so it pinches and holds it there. The Floyd rose setup is just so much different than my cheap ibanez standard. Doesn't really matter how badly I set up my ibanez, it holds tune very well. Ive been using heavy strings, I really like the Ernie ball not even slinkys and the dr ddt's. I'm leaning more towards Ernie ball now because my third string always breaks from droppi

  • I wanna go from 9 to 10 but I'm too lazy to do this >_>

  • @Platinumham come on man do it!

  • This has been really helpful :) Just got myself a dean razorback with the floyd rose trem on it and It was driving me crazy, actually broke a few sets of strings trying to work it out lol. Finally got my axe setup to a 9 to 46 set of ernie ball hybrids. I can now enjoy my razorback thanks to you :)

  • @Kaizion hey I'm glad, get shredding some Pantera on that thing.

  • There is a much easier way to do this rather than guessing on how much to tighten/loosen

  • Thanks a lot. This actually very, very helpful. Trem bridges are a pain to me to be honest, both ends of the locking system tune and change the tension on the strings, this just causes confusion to me but anyway, great video. Also, what you briefly mentioned about physics is true, physics do come to play in these bridges a lot.

  • Hello, I tried setting up my guitar. But after I did, there was very little sustain and a lot of external, unwanted sounds/noise coming from the strings. How can I fix this ?

Also I am trying to tune my guitar to drop B with gauge 11 strings, is that good?

    Looking forward to ur reply.

  • @luciferAir Sorry for taking ages to reply. I think you might be ok with a set of 11's but it depends on what the scale length of the guitar is and what your thicker top end strings are. For an even tension on a standard B set I'd probably be looking at something like 12, 16, 20, 30, 42, 56 but even then your top end might be a bit loose. Heavier would be along the lines of 12, 17, 21, 32, 44, 60 but that unwound 3rd string will be getting very thick...

  • thanks! great video you have just saved my ltd kh202 from being smashed!!

  • @shredder1390 I'd advise you to still smash it and pick up a real guitar.

  • @xXxMortixXx wtf???? Id advise you to learn to take a compliment when it is genuinely given, we have nt all got trust funds, twat

  • @shredder1390 Haha, easy there killer. Don't get your knickers in a knot. It was a joke. Learn to take one. Twat.

  • @shredder1390 Hrm... you do realise that it wasn't me who replied to you right? I've played a KH202 before and actually quite liked it.

  • @dimert oh yeah sorry mate

  • @shredder1390 hey man that's good news

  • I have a situation, one of the bolts on the back used to change the gague is loosened. Basically it will slide out if it gets loosened past a certain point. I'm putting some 9's n im guessing it needs to be kinda loose but it won't stay put. What should i do?

  • Thanks man, all the "rambling" really helped. The little tips/side notes is really what I've been looking for. I do find tuning the strings staggered to be a bit easier than tuning up a step or two on the low strings but this seems to be a personal preference thing anyway. My biggest problem is the strings pulling out of the clamps. Would folding the string help hold it better or would that just cause interference?

  • @1gen6 The strings are pulling out of where? The machine head string feeders at the top of the guitar? If that's the case you have some problems.... are you cutting the strings too short before the tension is being taken?

  • another way to get the bridge to sit right is lake a putty knife put a tiny cloth on it and wedgew it under the bridge...set it to the point to where the floyd rose sitts level...then tighten the strings to your prefered tunings...then re adjust the springs in the back untill the bridge is no longer putting insane tention on the putty knife...remove the knife then fine tune

  • can anyone tell me why when I am tuning up, it keeps pulling on my bridge? I tried screwing it in, but I don't know if thats right or not

  • NICE !

You should ask Floyd Rose & Ibanez big money for this (instruction) video. With the info on tuning that they provide you start to hate the FR tremelo in no time. For sure many FR-users are very thankfull for your vid. But that's probably why you get all those nice comments. Thanks again man ! RESPECT !

  • @SenorGhost you are too kind!

  • FUCKIN A thanks mann. im changing my strings from .10 guage, to a .13 guage for the heavy fuckin metal so i appreciate this

  • I recently had my Ibanez RG set to a full step down tuning with Ernie Ball Skinny Top/ Heavy Bottom (.10, .13, .17, .30, .42, .52) and I want to change it to standard tuning using D'Addario Medium Top/Heavy Bottom (.11, .14, .18, .30, .42, .52). What would be the best way to do that?, because when I tried to get it into standard the bridge was way beyond being parallel..any help would be appreciated.

  • @tjg524 do what it says in the video I'd guess, if you're increasing the tension by putting on slightly thicker strings, tighten the claw in the back up a little and tune it. Won't take a lot of tightening with that change in gauge. Hope you got on ok.

  • @tjg524 thanks alot man.i just built my own guitar from scratch and i use the floyd rose trem bridge.its my first time working with the bridge...YOU JUST SOLVED A MONTHS LOAD OF HEADACHES! thanks mate..from an irish man in america!

  • @TheJdoran17 no problems man!

  • Thanks soooo much for this. I recently changed from 10-46 to 09-42 and this saved me from giving up all together. Great vid

  • I am going to get a guitar with a floyd rose original tremolo. Will this method work for the original or is it for special only? or all of them? sorry im new to tremelos...

  • @InfectTheCrypts I should imagine even if the method wasn't identical the principals would be, hope you got on ok?

  • THANKS so much for this video!! i just went from 9's to 10's and couldn't figure out why the bridge was so high and i was getting pissed haha but after watching this i successfully reset my floyd rose, even though it took a long time! I appreciate it bro

  • but i dn't get it, when i had the factory strings on my guitar (just after i had bought it) i could tune them pretty low and the trem wouldn't move at all and now that i have new strings i cannot even drop D on my tuning without making the trem go downards. How come?

  • your vids help me a lot! thz!

  • I am using a 10-52 right now with 3 springs in the back and am switching to a 8-38 any tips so I don't completely ruin my guitar

  • @xBuRToN126x Ease the tension off on the claw loads... that is a big drop in tension. I don't think you'd ruin the guitar, the bridge would just pull back like crazy and you'll find the strings resting on the pickups in no time.

  • @dimert hey, i got a problem, when i get regular/heavy bottom fender strings 0.010 to 0.052 my floyd rose is at a forward angle but when i get light strings, 0.009 to 0.042, it goes a slightly backward angle, i don't understand? what should i do? reply asap!!! XD

  • @strangestalker3456 Well the thicker strings pull harder than the thinner strings... sounds like your bridge is probably set for the tension somewhere in the middle of this. If your bridge goes backwards down into the cavity, ease off the tension on the springs. (unscrew it a bit). The reverse for the bridge pulling up, but detune it first before tuning it back up.

  • question....I'm kinda a noob learning things the hard way I have a guitar with floyd I wanted to go into a drop d (already had a shop put heavier strings on ) I had it where it should be but the bridge was up in the air....so all I have to do is increase tension in the back to level the bridge and then tune again ??? any advice would be well appreciated

  • I'm getting an Ibanez equiped with a ZR tremolo system. Would this process work the same way? by adjusting the ZPS knob until the bridge is level, when dealing with string gauge changes?

  • cheers for the vid :P helped me out big time hahaha

  • Hey man, thanks for your vid. It really helped me. I have a question though, I just wanna make sure that I have it right, I have a guitar in drop A with 12 gauge strings on it right now. If I want it in drop C, I choose a string gauge (May 11s?) take the strings off w/ something holding the bridge up, put the new gauge strings on, tune them, the adjust the springs so that with the bridge depressed, the strings are in tune and it lines up with the body. Am I forgetting anything?

  • @ 3:07 I lost you. The problem i'm having is my guitar will NEVER stay in tune... I'd start from low E (standard tuning) up to high E and by the time i finished the low E string is WAY out of wack because the strings have lifted the bridge so high up!

  • Ok. I'm changing from stock strings (9s I think) to a 13-65 set and tuning down to C with a dropped E string. Now, if I understood you right this will pull the brigde a little bit more up, so I have to tighten it until it's about flat in the right tuning? Is it really that simple? Because I'm terrified of doing something wrong and just f*cking it all up.

  • @frobank I dont think Floyd Rose can handle a 13 gauge string......Even with 5 Springs in the back....you may not be able to level the bridge to the body In Tune...The max I Could reach was Gauge 10...With 11s the bridge never leveled to the body....So now I am using 10s !

    Good Luck !

  • THANK YOU!! hahaha,

  • thank buddy, this was very helpful for my first time and also changed gauge as well.. took me like a hour bt i got there lol thanks

  • I spent ages trying to set up my Floyd (after changing string gauge) with no luck and was about to take it to the shop and pay out my arse to get it done! But these vids gave me the confidence to sort it myself and it worked! Not that hard if you just chill and take it step by step. Thanks bro!!

  • i have a problem, i cant tune the guitar at all and everytimr i try to, the floyd rose goes tilts forward.

  • @graham1angel its like i tune one string then another one,. and right away the one i did previously goes down half a step!

  • @graham1angel I explained all this in the videos...

  • @dimert ya now i have another problem, the tremolo still dives in even after having it screws screwed all the way.

  • regular gauge 11s are up to 52

  • i was just changing string on my ibanez rg350dx, for sure i used the right string gauge that it came with, i was changing strings and the bridge was abnormally pointing in the ugitar body as if i used 11 gauge trings instead of 9. help?

  • i have a esp m-100fm and it was stocked with three springs, would i need more for D standard tuning depending on the gauge? i plan to use skinny top heavy bottoms.

  • hey thats a jem why do you call it a floyd rose it an ibanez edge pro and its much different than a floyd

  • @kalmahman48 Floyd made the tremolo system, the technology is licensed to various companies under a patent... how is the edge pro "much different" than a floyd, the entire technology is licensed?

  • @dimert its much different. visual and quality wise. its obvoiusly different looking because its completely flat (but when you set it, it has to be at an angle, not flush with the body), and they have locking stud (the actual trem posts) mods for them. and its a little bigger and heavier, with larger saddles adding better stability and a larger, fatter tone. theyre also made of a better, stronger metal so it wont corrode as quickly. and its called the lo-pro edge, not floyd rose or edge pro

  • @kalmahman48 and you can replace the knife blades when they wear out on the lo-pro. on the floyd, when they wear down, all you can do if file them sharp again but eventually they will wear out to the point of where you have nothing left to file. then you have to get a new trem. trust me, what you have is far better than any floyd rose, i hope i helped a bit (although i dont think you wanted the help) and i wasnt trying to be sarcastic, contradictory, or a smart ass :) and 3:55 is the exact angle

  • Thanks a lot, dude.

These videos really helped me understand the Floyd Rose mechanism, which will be quite helpful in the future

  • Thankyou so much for this video!

Ill be adding this to my favourites for future preferences :)

  • So if I change guages will I have to intonate and adjust the action?

  • since your going with a lighter gauge and lessoning the tension, would you apply more tension if your putting on a gauge?

  • @VanishmentMatt sorry i forgot to say heavier gauge, if your putting on a heavier gauge

  • thanks alot man you helped me out alot u dont know howq stressed and pissed ive been over this thx alot man.

  • Dont normally comment on YouTube videos, but I felt I had to say a HUGE THANK YOU for this vid. I changed guage to hybrid strings on my Razorback and it was doing my head in! THIS VIDEO SAVED MY SANITY AND GUITAR!!! Thanks again bud! Rock on

  • @paulwebster901 thanks a lot, you are most welcome

  • i just changed different gauge strings for the first time in a floyd rose tremolo guitar. Thank you very must for this two videos.

  • @petermlm you are also more than welcome

  • when i get it level then tune it, all the other strings go out of tune wtf?

  • @ReebHound the tension from the 6 strings have to equal the pull from the springs in the back to keep the bridge level, right?

As soon as one string starts pulling harder, the rest of them have to do less work to keep the bridge level... so they detune. Simple physics no?

That's why I said to overtune the thicker strings a little to take the load so when you tune the remaining strings up they'll balance out. It's a black art mate, keep trying you'll get there.

  • I got a guitar a couple days back and it was in e standard with floyd rose set up. I didn not realised you cannot change the tuning on something like this without taking it to a pro(or so the guy who sold it me says) I tried to tune it to drop d and then realised there was some heavy buzzin. So i took it back to e standard but it still buzzes :S any help?

  • Lol, I had big problems trying to tune my RG from Eb Standard to D standard. I didn't think of the overtuning trick. XD

  • i got a floyd rose a couple days and at first it is frustrating. I re-strung it which took a couple hours only to realize i want a lower gauge. so now i have gauge 11 strings on and the bridge is floating too high. I just want to leave it alone so i don't try anything and mess it up. I'll ask my teacher whether i should get it done professionally and what are some good gauge 10 strings.

  • @quadlineboarder Learn to do it yourself, just work out how the bridge actually works with the tensions and everything and it'll click. A good set of 10s... I like D'addario strings, but I use custom sets. 10, 13, 17, 24, 34, 46 sounds good to me... :)

    Or even better... 9, 12, 16, 22, 32, 44 is perfect.

  • @dimert you see, the problem i have is that its not too high, its too low, and i want to get it straught, in E tuning

  • @ChokingHazardsBand ok sure, so either release some tension by unscrewing your screws in the back, or remove a spring if you have more than 3 installed.

  • Okay!...... What!!??? hahahaha 01:16 LOL

  • @PosthumouslyObscure my accent not doing me any favours? :]

  • thank man you really helped me out with this. I couldn't get my trem back where it was.

  • why did my fucking 1st string broke..I'm fucking pissed right now..

  • what about intonation? don't you have to reinonate the guitar after you make a gauge change?

  • i bought a set of 10's and realized that i couldn't tune my guitar to "E" it would only tune to "D".

  • maybe you should put more springs in the back.

  • i didnt think about that, i'll try it

  • thanks brother...this video was a big help

  • this is a very good and helpfull video thank you so much. It help me so mcuh as it was my first time changeing string on my tremolo

  • Hi dimert, thanks for all the help few month back my guitar has been playing excellent since!

i have another guitar i wanna fit a floyd rose trem on its a jackson dk1 do you know how to do this? thanks again dude.

  • you should have made this video in 3 parts :) thanks for the tips

  • This is very useful and very clearly explained. Thanks! I'm thinking of getting an RG prestige soon, but was worried about the trem since I've got a Strat and have never had to think about tuning and setup that much before!

  • my bridge is too low and the strings are hitting the fretts i need to make the bridge rise up a lil bit but i dunno how to doo that, help plz..

  • it depends on what bridge you have

on the ibanez edge series bridges you just get an alumn key the size of the holes in the bridge anchor bolts that screw down into the body. twist them to lower or raise the bolts into/out of the body and the bridge will move with them.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks a lot bro for posting this very helpful video. I just got an Ibanez S520 and it's a pain in the neck to tune. It.s my first guitar with a floating trem/bridge.

  • yeah when you first try and play with them it can get frustrating, important thing is information and practise though. If you understand how it works it's half the battle over :)

  • @dimert great video, thanks mate. It looks really easy, i am very familiar with changing strings with a tremolo but isnt there more that can go wrong when you change string guage?

I have heard the term truss rod adjustment, but im not sure what that actually means!

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

what a help! you saved me hours of stressing in the future! thank you for posting this man!

  • no worries, thanks for actually watching it and understanding it as opposed to mailing me asking how to fix the issues I explain in the video :(

  • This helped very much , thanks for that.

  • no probs!

  • plzzz i need help ive gone up a string gauge from 10 to 11 and when i tune to standard the bridge is lifting up how can i fix this?

  • i forgot to mention i dont have a floyd rose bridge

  • are you taking the piss? :|

  • 1) watch the video

    2) understand what it tells you to do

    3) watch the video again

    4) adjust your guitar

    4 easy steps to success !! :D

  • To get the slack out I leave the nut unlocked and just pull the trem arm up and then dump it for about 2. , 5 min. break, 2 min. stretch.

    What kinda strings you use?

  • d'addario singles

  • Great video, and it's worked perfectly cheers mate. One question: is it important to have the side of the trem with the bar (the side close to the knobs)resting at exactly the same level as the other side? Mine came out a millimetre or so lower but its staying in tune fine (so far).

  • No thats fine man, I know people who have the trem sat slightly lower on the side of the thinner strings just to get the ultimate in low action across the board.

As long as its in tune and stable it's totally up to you.

  • Do you need to change your gauge if your going from a 10 to a 9?

  • Surely the question is, do you need to change your car if you're going from a Ford to a Renault?

  • u are a lifesaver!

  • my bridge does not fucking get flat

it is always up, i loosen the strings alot, tune it to standard, up by a mile

  • @benisamofosexual

try adding an extra suspension spring and tighten your claw to lower your bridge if it is too high

  • Use the video(s) to tell you how to fix it then. If you can't work it out, put the guitar down, take a breather, and get another hobby.

  • I almost smashed my guitar trying to replace the old strings with some Ernie's, thanks a lot for this!

  • shit i just cut the balls off then put the strings on

  • ah yeah? cut the balls off what in particular? Cats? Deer?

  • thanks for this!! i was having a realllllyyyy hella hard time with my ibanez with the bridge, and this helped loads, thanks!

  • Nice to see a Brit doing a guitar vid!! But if I may tell you my way?? String removal is as you say, but use a few picks in the rear between the block and body to keep the trem sitting level. Then OVER tighten the claw screws (slightly!!), fit the new strings, tune to pitch and stretch. Then simply slacken the trem claw until the picks in the rear become loose enough to JUST ease out... And you're done! Trem set level, guitar in tune.... Nice axe, by the way!!!!

  • you the man!!!!!!!!!

i just changed my gauge from 9 to 10....it wasnt hard at all on my jackson!

  • yeah right man, Jackson's don't make me hard either

  • what strings would you recommend gauge/brand for floating tremolos...i want some nice strings that wont break when i pull the trem and I want some life on the strings so they stay tuned longer than a week

thanks for this vid it will prove very helpful in the near future when i install my floyd rose

  • D'addario strings.

  • elixer

  • elixir*

  • My friend has his guitar (Razorback FR) with the bridge up and it looked like a triangle. I don't talk to him much anymore, but if I did I would tell him to watch your video. He broke his floyd rose system recently also, probably from doing that, not sure if it would break but it was literally up in the air, and I found it almost impossible to play.

  • cocaine is one hell of a drug

  • It turns all your bad feelings into good feelings...It's a nightmare.

  • i couldnt get the screws in the back to move on my guitar, help please?

  • Use a screw driver or get someone without weak wrists to have a go.

Seriously though, what are you trying to do? Screw or unscrew? It must be a pretty logical reason that they wont move... you'll get there.

  • my bad, shoulda been more specific. i was trying to unscrew them, and yes i was using a screwdriver, and no i dont have weak wrists, but they just wouldnt move.

  • Thanks for this video man...i need to restring both of my esp's..I was planning to go to guitar center to get them done professionally but the dude in there said it would be 70 bucks each guitar..so i laughed in his face and walked out hahaha..but yeah...thanks so much for this video

  • man guitar does rip people off don't they?

  • 70 bucks is what, 40 quid?

Just to setup a floyd trem?

Some people dont realise if they show people how to do things they'll win customers eh...

Can't show you how to setup a floyd trem mate, trade secrets. Part of the guitarists guild, they'll kick me out like.

    Tossers!

  • I posted a month ago thanking you, dimert, but I have to thank you again. I just redid my Ibanez RG220, but I tuned it to E flat (1/2 step down). BELIEVE ME OUT THERE, PEOPLE!!! Just LISTEN to dimert, and you can't go wrong. It does takes a little experience, and I guess you can say there is a "feel" aspect to it, but keep at it and it'll all eventually come together. And again, Thanks for the vid!

  • cheers man

I'd appreciate it if people actually did listen to the video instead of mailing me questions I've already answered too :(

  • looks good thanks, I'll try this as soon as I get back my borrowed tools !

  • Bloody nightmare..but never give up, thats the motto

  • i cant get my guitar to drop C just drop d is there a trick to it..............help

  • i'm not sure what problem you're having that is stopping you from tuning to drop C, but if you're finding the strings are too slack... get a heavier gauge :)

  • I'm having a problem with my floyd rose

    I'm using gauge 12

I have it tuned to Drop C

All the strings are perfectly tuned

Except for the fourth(C) it's really loose

    Someone help please!

  • do you think it will be an easier job with a non floating floyd?

  • yeah it would be a lot easier because you dont have the to worry about the bridge sinking into the guitar body.

  • Thanks, Bro'! I just bought a Jackson and I had no idea of the gauge they had on it. So I changed them to 8 gauge. I READ how to do this, but it just didn't click with me. Your vid was an eye-opener. THANK YOU for posting this! I got a little lucky and got it right the first time! Well, I guess I got A LOT lucky.......

  • heyy i put 11-50 gauges on my rr3, i didnt realize that i had to reset the floyd rose, so like it was really high, i don't know what to do.

  • Take the plate of the back, tighten the screws.

  • thanks for the video man,now my lo pro edge trem are in the corrrect angle but why there are fret buzz at the 5th,4th string, and a bit at the 1st fret at the 12 fret ,my guitar is jem7vwh,

  • i dont know why but every string on my guitar is touching the fret board when i take the wrench out...ive tried adjusting the tension both ways but no change..i dont understand...ive done everything right..

  • Yeah that is normal, the bridge dives back down into the body because you keep the strings nice and slack.

Now they're touching, start tuning them up and see if the bridge starts to raise!

  • Very good and clear but I've got a question. I want to move from 11-52 to 10-46. If I understand correctly I have to set the springs so that the bridge is flat when the guitar is tuned. But I've got 5 springs in my guitar. Should I remove some of them? Aren't 5 too many for lighter strings? Or do I just need to set the springs accordingly?

  • It's something you'll have to find out yourself I think, there is no definite answer I can give you on a per guitar basis but use your head a bit on this one.

If you find you're unscrewing too far on the screws in the back, and the bridge is still below neutral, screw them back in, detune the guitar then remove a spring or two.

Don't let the screws pop out of the body and release the spring claw when you have strings on it!

  • hey man!, thanks for the vid.

got one question for you tho, how far is too far (generally) to unscrew the screws, so that i don't have to worry about them popping out

  • i switched from 10 gauge to 8 to 38 gauge strings and i have a peavey vortex with floyd rose tremolo and its been a bitch trying to set the spring tension and another thing is i raised the bottom side of the bridge gigher than the top side because i like the e b and g string to be higher do i have to set the bridge evenly and then set the spring tension? i really need help thanks alot man

  • help my guitar is an ibanez rg with a edge3 trem, and i want to go from 9-42 to 10-46 and it wont let me.the bridge just keeps raising. plz help

  • I had the bridge level, then every time i pulled tension to tune the guitar, the bridge kept raising higher and higher. What do I need to do?

  • Dude have you watched the video? If the bridge raises when you tune the strings then you need to tighten the screws in the back.

Don't start with the trem level, it should be down in the body of the guitar and raise up as you tune... all you're trying to do is create equal forces on the strings and the springs whilst getting the strings in tune.

    Understand? :)

  • Sorry man I'm slow, watched everything again and got it working perfectly. You are genius, thanks for posting vid and responding.

  • just read a comment thats concerning. after wtching your vid i set my jackson k-1 to 11's in drop c. do i need to worry? wazdc, comment is my concern..."possibly"?

  • Why should you be concerned?

11's for Drop C sounds a little heavy for my taste but some people play 12's in standard E... so no reason to worry I'd say.
