Even the word "Asian" is problematic next to "White" and "Black." The former is a geographical location, the latter are pigments. We need something like "Yellow" or "Tan" and it would include people from southern Greece, Italy, Spain, Northern Africa, Eastern Africa, Middle East, Mexico, Central/South America, Natives of Alaska, America, Australia, etc. "Yellow" or "Tan" or "Bronze" Americans are a huge group in a democratic system.

The only place it is considered offensive is in the U.S. we have a saying in Asia ( U.S. Asians are more Asian than Asians ) like Irish-Americans are more Irish than Irish Italian-Americans are more Italian than Italians. You're a pretty funny guy, but your contention that only inanimate objects are allowed to be called Oriental is completely erroneous. Oriental means east and applies to both people from EASTERN Asia as well as articles originating from that area. For example, it would be absurd and confusing to identify a Russian, an Israeli or a Turk as an "Asian" (though they live on the continent)  when one is trying to describe them by their color and ethnicity. Oriental is far more readily identifiable.

Do Americans generally not define people from the Indian Subcontinent, Central Asia and the Middle East as Asian, because I've noticed Americans use the word 'Asian' exclusively for South East Asians, and I've never heard it used that way in the UK. Here 'Asian' refers to people descended from the original peoples of any of the continent of Asia. How do Americans classify, say, Bangladeshi Americans and Syrian Americans if not as 'Asian'?

Yeah in America Asian tends to refer to people of East Asian descent. Though sometimes applied to people of South Asian descent. But not generally to people of Middle Eastern descent.
