i have to learn 4 mallets and a 4 mallet solo in about 6 months for college auditions(music education aud.)
ive played mallets about 3 months so far, know all the scales majors and minors(know some harmonic and melodic minors) and have begun 4 mallet training with a symphonic performer.
@wadoryu2u I usually don't respond to questions or comments. I sold my Marimba three years ago. The question is, "Do you WANT to do it?" If the answer is "yes", then you CAN do it. If it is something that is important to you, then you will make the time DAILY to achieve the goal. If you're a drummer, you know the process of learning a rudiment or any other piece of music. And, just in case no one has ever let you in on this little secret. You can do anything you want you set your mind to do.
@FantomOfFear Even though this is more of an uploader question I think I have an answer :) you can play marimba/vibes in free time, but it really depends on your director. Does he allow non-percussionist to use percussion equipment specifically for study of that instrument? If he does, you could get a percussion friend who is primarily mallets to help show you basic rudiments on it:)
@FantomOfFear You dont have to play percussion at all to be an awesome marimba player. one of my good friends is an AMAZING marimba player and she started as sax and still plays both. It will make yiu a better musician. c: Good Luck!
im a freshman in highschool and i play mallets in our band... Desoto Central High School, if you wanna look us up, we were state champions this year, so we're good :P ha. anyways, our percussion leader is making us try out on snare, mallets, and tempany this upcoming concert season. It's good that you're taking the time to learn other instruments. But i'm glad i'm getting an earlier start. You're great btw :)
sweet, man. this isnt an easy solo for someone just starting. a lot of it sounds the same with a twist, so that usually causes people to forget whats coming up next. you nailed it, bro!
When I close my eyes to this I see pixies and elves frolicking under enormous mushrooms in a grassy field with a large rainbow overhead and a sun with a smiley face. Also, everything is in the most intense, vivid, neon colors....whooooaaa
i need some advice, im a 8th grader hoping to go into a competition to win a scholarship so i can pay off allot of drumcorps stuff for the summer coming up, im not very experienced at mallets but im confident in my rudimentary snare abilities, but i need a good marimba solo, what do u suggest?
practice is all that i can suggest. if your cinfident in your snare techniques, i suggest getting sticks with the lowest possible rebound and practicing your singles on a surface with little or no rebound to it. other than that, always choose music that is just a little harder than your currently comfortable with and go from there. as long as your good at reading rythems, all i can really suggest is to practice accuracy at speed, wich is usually what gives most drummers problems.
hey im a bass guitar player and i signed up for freshmen band (for credits) and it turns out they are a concert band so now i have to play marimba and xylophone and i got these mallets that seem pretty short so i was wondering what is the normal size of mallets
IF YOU WERE TO MESS WITH THIS I TRIED THIS THE OTHER DAY WITH A DIFFERENT PIECE. TAKE THIS AND PLAY IT IN 12/8 and prepare to be amazed how awesome it will change the piece...
I really didn't think about it. Try not to think about the time it is in. Just try to think about making it sound musical. Ask your teacher at school he/she will know a lot more than I would.
This is Janis Potter- the marimba soloist. I have taught many students over the years and I am impressed that you have aquired this kind of technical facility in only a few short months. Don't forget to start playing 4 mallets as well...I know you'll do very well. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the kind words. That really means a lot coming from you. I enjoyed my short time with the Marimba immensely but have since moved on to other endeavors. Thanks again.
I liked it! How wide do you think a 5 octave marimba would be? Cause i'm wanting to build one, well actually i'm not a carpenter but my dad will help me if I pay for the supplies. I was wanting to put it in my room and I just want to make sure it will fit. I was thinking of building a 3 octave one but I don't know, do you think that would be too limited?
"Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone" by Morris Goldenberg is a book that every percussionist should own. It is full of not only technique education, but a number of etudes and selections from classical pieces that make for excellent audition pieces. Its only 10-15 dollars, buy it and you will never regret it.
I mainly focus on mallets, but that wasn't bad. Your technique could use a little refining, not that it wasn't good, but its not just quite perfect. Definitely acceptable for five months. Dynamics tend to make a piece more interesting, and add more emotion into the piece, which would be good.
I sold the marimba and now I'm messing around with the bass guitar. I enjoyed my time with the marimba immensely. To tell you the truth I can't remember what kind of mallets they were. Probably a Vic Firth model.
That was great! I like that you've decided to be more of a percussionist than just a drummer. You need to tell my school's drumline that. Haha.. I play marimba and am auditioning for Region Band and the etude you're playing is played by one of the upperclassmen bands. What's it called?
Very good, song is very interesting and your risk movements are very good, but i must say you are right hand is choking up too high and you hand is tense, just relaxe it =) well anyways good job!
nice job for someone playing five months, I've been playing mallets for two years(all the years I've been in band) so I'm wondering if you can send me the music thankies
nice playing. i do a lot of mallet stuff, and coming over from drumming just on sets and snares, i just kinda hit notes, but work on the musical aspect of the marimba dynamics and stuff, its an awesome instrument. also, remember on those faster passages, you can get the same sound on the outside of the top bars as in the middle and reduce movement. try choking down on the mallet a little too! good work for 5 months!
I applaud you for joining the mallet world!! and you by no means in a bad place for being within your fist few months. A good tip is that there should be four fingers of space between the back tip of the mallet and your hand. Also your fulcrum should be your back three fingers, and your thumb and index finger should only provide accuracy and NEVER the power of the stoke. I wish you luck in your new beginning.
The solo is from the Goldenberg Xylo/Vibra/Marimba School, right? I also had to play it a long time ago. I suggest you to practice the first two pages of the violin concerto in a minor from bach (also in this book) and then switch to four mallet pieces (mexican murals, yellow after the rain, etc.)

when you roll notes, you should try to keep the mallets in one spot above the resonators (angle the mallets) so you get a smoother sound :)

Very good decision. I suppose you to be able to switch to four mallet technique. But you can also torture yourself by playing 2-mallet-bach suites^^
fraggynator 4 years ago
I'm very wary of four-mallet technique. Holding two sticks in one hand seems strange after only using one stick in each hand for all these years. Hopefully, the transition from two to four-mallets won't be a traumatic event for me.
Charliebdrummer 4 years ago
You grip your sticks kind of high up and I couldn't really tell for sure but I see a lot of unnecessary doubling up when you could be doing alternate sticking. Your doing really well for 5 months though and the piece is nice.
ImLostAgain 4 years ago
Very observant! You're right about the doubling up. I was getting my sticks crossed up in one section so I just doubled up to eliminate that in that one particular section. Yes, I know I'm choking up too much on my sticks. But, thanks for reminding me. I've got to work on that! Thanks, again.
