It's hilarious to watch Salieri be the only one to make a teeny tiny effort not to kiss the Emperor's ass all the time. Everyone in the room thinks the Emperor's dumb as a post but Salieri seems to be the only one who's not resigned to grovelling before an idiot.

@AtenRa - Lol, yeah, I didn't notice that but since you pointed it out such does seem to be the case. Actually though, there was one other guy present who didn't constantly yesman him - Baron van Swieten. They had a close working relationship for a number of years and didn't always agree on everything. But Emperor Joseph was progressive enough to allow alot of advances to occur within Austria and not just a few of those forward-thinking changes came from the Baron.
the "herrr director's" comment that 'all educated people agree on that' (that opera sounds better in Italian then German) is actually quite a nasty insult to make to the Emperor, as although Joseph the II was well meaning and tried to imrpove Austria greatly with reform's his education was very limited..... If he had been a little more quick on the uptake the herr direcotr might have fond himself in some trouble
i read somewhere that the director chose her to replace Meg Tilly because she was not 'too pretty' to play the daughter of an innkeeper, but I think Elizabeth Berridge is beautiful- she has an infectious sweet smile
@sslohier Actually they replaced Meg Tilly because she tore a ligiment in her leg while play soccer with a bunch of kids a day before she and Tom were about to shoot together and she would have to be in the hospital for 5 weeks, so they had to find a quick replacement for her and they chose Elizabeth.
@Galantski she was.. but she was adorable enough to pull it off. And while she was a bit flat and common, she didn't overact. She has this nice, unpretentious, pragmatic quality to her delivery that i quite admire.
The best performance of the Serenade for Winds! I haven't heard a better one. And I LOVE the episode where Salieri describes it! Never fails to bring tears into my eyes))
@HelenaVanCity Try the version by the Berlin Philharmonica Wind Ensemble. I'm just an amateur when it comes to music, but I like that version better. It's smoother and not so rushed. No dishonor on the Academy of St. Matrin in the Fields, but the berliners makes it more silky smooth. You can find both versions (and many more) on Spotify.
Also, on the soundtracks, you can much easier hear the beginning Salieri describes... the "pulse" from a "rusty squeezebox". :)
what a pity that because of Pushkine and this movie, most people have a wrong idea of Salieri. He was a true friend to Mozart, one of the few who really understood the genious, one of the few who attended his funeral
@Shader013 that was a use that was put into play by many who wore the wigs, it started as a trend in fashion to prevent lice, and it became popular with the nobility who could afford to maintain those wigs
@youngfart40 Yes....but he was in the news as recently as July this year with being arrested on a felony charge because he failed to update his sex offender registration. He recieved 3 years probation and 250 hours community service. He got 5 years probation for having a 14 year old boy pose for explicit photos and having other child porn. He plead no contest. So, if Mel Gibson can get such publicity for what he does, why doesn't Jeffrey Jones deserve to also?
Mozart laughs like a Gay man ! A sort of high pitched shrill laugh ! I have heard gay men laughing like this in movies ! But in real life Mozart was not gay at all !
However he was considered palyful !
May be that is why they are showing his nature through this annoying laugh !
@iceburner03: I agree with you. The best part of the movie is the actor who played Salieri. He is very classy and well-mannered. Excellent actor! A true talent.
@iceburner03 F. Murray Abraham does the performance of a lifetime, yes. The best effort is the one we never really think of: the difference between the old and young Salieri. Along with the makeup artists (who also won an Academy Award for this by the way) he makes a perfectly credible portrayal of an old man.
I also love the storytelling of the old Salieri. He outputs emotion so well. For example... "It had to be! *pause* It better be...". The bitterness just soaks through. Love it!
How about if the subject is fascism, media moguls controlling government, and organized crime, it's in Italian, and if it's about scientific progress, overthrowing the Romans, and composing the most beautiful music ever made, it's in German?
Both languages have beauty, just like both cultures. Saying Italian=love and German=hate and war is racist dribble.
Well, its just a matter of taste for me. I am not implying any of those cultures are about that. Many operas that take place in one County use the language of an other country. (Like how Carmen takes place in Spain but the Opera is in French).
I speak some German, some Spanish and a lot of Latin. I'm sure even you would think a love scene should be, betwwen the two in Italian not German.
Besides I am part German, why would I want to put down my own heritage?
After searching for the song it's not the 3rd movement, it's a combination of 2 movements of Mozart's Gran Partita. The begining is indeed the start of the 3rd movement: Adagio. The end is of the 7th movement: Molto Allegro.
I read that for the groundtheme of the play "Amadeus" Peter Shaffer used an almost forgotten (both then and now) play named "Mozart and Salieri ", written by the famous Russian writer and playwright Nikolai V. Gogol.
My mistake: not Gogol, but Alexander Pushkin. And in Pushkin`s case I must say a poet instead of a writer.
Anyway, by this Pushkin conveyed his own despair from the surrounding mediocrity and the authorities` benevolence towards the medocrities and oppression of the talent.
Obviously later Shaffer ( and then Forman by the film ) extracted this fiction story out of its specifically Pushkin`s impression and that created the discussion why the movie depicts a non-existing duel between M and S.
I play about as good as "his majesty". Does anyone know what piece it is he´s playing, and if it really is a work of Salieri? I would love to learn how to play it.
I do feel bad for Salieri! He spend such a long time writing that funny melody...and then...BOOM...Mozart comes in, listents to it once and makes a much better version of it!
He was referring to Mozart as someone who composed in the German language, not Mozart's actual nationality. It's like calling an American professor who teaches English an "English Professor."
@SundaraKapasalathi: Nay! During his and his fathers lifetime there was no Germany and no Austria but the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation which lasted until 1806 (Napoleon forced its dissolution), so in their entire lifetime both knew nothing but the old German Realm. The separation of the two states was later forced by foreign powers and naturally there is now real difference; except that the Germans have a guilt complex about Hitler while the Austrians style themselves as his first victims.
Why do the kappellmeister and his "boss" speak italian anytime?

@sslohier - She is, however, regrettably a weak link in an otherwise strong cast. I have no idea how she got the role, besides what is written here.
Hulce is no Olivier, either, but in fairness he gave the performance of his career in 'Amadeus'.
Abraham, on the other hand, was sheer genius as Salieri; so much so, that the title could justly have been changed to 'Salieri'.

GERMAN composer??????
are u kidding me!!!! mozart was austrian

He was referring to Mozart as someone who composed in the German language, not Mozart's actual nationality. It's like calling an American professor who teaches English an "English Professor."

Leopold, his father, was born in Germany, and moved to Austria for the reasons you gave.
