Whenever in a public place to begin with, you should never have to show i.d, unless you are actually committing a crime. Police have the right to ask for your identification if they are suspicious and with G20 ongoing at the time, they were being very cautious, even to a fault. But I don't see what causing a big fuss over this concept is going to achieve, other than a possible and highly unnecessary criminal record. Arguing with the police is just going to create tension and cause emotional, bad reactions.

@Independent0bserver I was asked for my identification because I was the only person in the plaza and it was around 4 a.m. I guess I looked suspicious, considering I was locking up a garden centre compound at the time. An officer drove up to me and asked If I had seen anyone in the area because they were looking for someone. I said no, and he asked to see some i.d. so I showed him my license and that was the end of it.

Whenever in a public place to begin with, you should never have to show i.d, unless you are actually committing a crime. Unless I'm driving, I DON'T carry ID of ANY kind. It is a driver's license and if I'm not driving, then it's not needed.
Also, if I get pulled over while driving the get to see my driver's license....However, they get NO other info. Cops here like to ask where you're going to, where you came from and where you work at, but they are told that, if it's not on the driver's license then I'm not legally required to give them that information. Cops ARE the enemy - treat them as such!

Police have the right to ask for your identification if they are suspicious and with G20 ongoing at the time, they were being very cautious, even to a fault. But I don't see what causing a big fuss over this concept is going to achieve, other than a possible and highly unnecessary criminal record. Arguing with the police is just going to create tension and cause emotional, bad reactions.

@Independent0bserver I was asked for my identification because I was the only person in the plaza and it was around 4 a.m. I guess I looked suspicious, considering I was locking up a garden centre compound at the time. An officer drove up to me and asked If I had seen anyone in the area because they were looking for someone. I said no, and he asked to see some i.d. so I showed him my license and that was the end of it.
Would you have any ambivalence to call the police in an emergency?

Don't you think they would have been more convincing if they had used a German accent? And what's will the baseball cap? You can't go around demanding paper form people wearing a baseball cap! That's just wrong, on so many levels. At the very least, there should be some polished leather, and maybe some strange occult, secret society symbol on the lapel, or something. I didnt contract they didnt finger prin me or photgraph me they entered a name a d DOB on their system that a police woman told them to she said he is MR blah blah and his DOB is ...., I said how would you know was you present at the time NO you are attaching ties and dates to me against my will so the courts can attack that what belongs to the crown.

Why the hell did any of you that live in Canada allow the gov. to invite the G20 to your county. It doesn't really matter if this guy is self-serving, he still has rights. To all those that say just show ID and move on, fine if you chose to do that. If someone else chooses to protest a violation of their rights, they have the right as well. I respect someone who may be a little annoying protecting the sanctity of civil liberty than someone who just rolls over because its easier. You don't put value on your rights, you lose them. It's a slow death, you wake up one day and they're all gone.

Oh, Canada... what are you doing? They should institute a age restriction on hiring police... cops old enough to not get into frustrated power struggles with citizens. You can see the cop getting frustrated, and now he can't back down from his 'show me id!' stance, because they aren't allowed to show weakness. It's a catch 22, for the cop - he can't afford to look weak (unable to enforce his directives), but he knows his legal position is untenable.
