  • I'm not from the West Coast, nor did I go to school out West. For some reason though, I like the "Big C" version better than the "Sons of Westwood". They're both good fight songs, though.

  • UCLA's version is way better...albeit hard to hear in this video.

  • Just three things:

    Get your own colors

    Get your own fight song

    Get a real damn bear

  • Cal Band rocks - their Big C is organic, rather than "Hollywood-ized" as with Sons of Westwood... there is more energy with Cal Band. But to UCLA - what ever happened to "Sing, UCLA"??

  • The UCLA band dominates Cal's! We have a better drumline, our version of the fight song is definitely better, and we don't prance.

  • sigh ucla copied cal

but at least the the ucla band doesn't play their fight song 42 times a game *looking at U$C

  • UCLA perfected the song and made it more popular around the world.

  • Big C may be the original, but Sons of Westwood is much better. And it's become more famous across the country as UCLA's main fight song.

  • Big C is so much better....and it's actually a Cal song originally. UCLA should stick to playing the Mighty Bruins

  • personally i would much like to see ucla play mighty bruins more often than sons of westwood. that song's hella tight. as for sons of westwood, well, we all know what that's like.

  • before UCLA came along, Cal's teams used Golden Bears, Bears, Bruins, Grizzlies, Ursines, Cubs- in essense anything that was related to bears

  • LOL, UCLA script formation owned the old bears HARD.

  • WOW POSER SONG from JUNIOR CALIFORNIA.

    U...C...L....A...UCLA EAT MY SHORTS

  • Sorry UCLA's bear is the better one seeing that it doesn't look like it's high on crack

  • GO BEARS!

  • *sigh*... ucla... EAT MY SHORTS.

  • Get your own damn Fight Song! Get your own damn Bear!

  • cool vid, thanks for posting. I always like comparing both songs (and of course, Big C always wins out =D)

  • Tried to rip off Cal's fight song and tried to even rip off Cal's mascot, posers.

  • that pretty much goes to the rest of the UCs...it's just UCLA is more successful both academically and athletically than the rest of the UCs so they're more expected to do something different. They all started as extension campuses of the one true University of California anyway =D

  • 59-0

nobody outside ucla likes the bruins

  • U-C-L-A EAT MY SHORTS!

  • stop talking about the past ucla screwed cal in football this year AL VERNER BABAY plus cal sucks in athletics meanwhile ucla has 103 in championships

  • 1-4? 59-0? Enjoy your season!

  • HEY U no wat we r REBUILDING AND WILL STILL destroy this week

  • 41-20.

    Eat my shorts, fUCLA.

  • fucla bRUINS suck

it takes talent & skill to come up with a fight song & them copying our song is tottally a load of bull

    its all about the bears!

  • It's pathethic that UCL-GAY copied cal colors mascot and fight song...Like its been said

    dont' bRUIN your life!

  • colors? haha u know that all the uc's colors are blue and gold retard

  • I'm a fan of 'SC (and played in the band), but I have respect for Cal, especially its classy, high-stepping band. "Big C" is a great fight song, and fucla's annoying "Sons of Westwood" is pure plagiarism!

  • On a different note....that high step is looking sharp!

  • EVERY UC school has their version of "Big 'C'". Cal, UCLA, UC Davis, and even UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara with their rendition called "El 'C' Grande." Although everyone did take this from its original version from Cal, it has become more of UC system-wide fight song. I'm a Cal fan but I like the fact that all UCs have their one song that binds them all together. After all, we are one University with many campuses. And Big C beats that stupid "March Grandioso" that TX bands play.

  • ryrycalguy, the history and controversy surrounding Big C is long and acrimonious between UC and UCLA. UCLA played a rendition of the song with the Cal and Davis bands on All University Weekend, but then adopted it as their fight song and replaced the lyrics without permission. Since Cal never copyrighted the song, they couldn't protect it (use exclusively). Since UCLA has been more successful over the years in sports, most people think that the song is theirs.

  • Oh yeah, I know. I was just trying to put a lighter note on all of the previous comments. Even though I was in the Cal Band, I can admit that UCLA taking the song is actually flattering.

  • key words: "since UCLA has been more successful..."

Go Bruins!! , but i respect Cal, UCLA and Cal are similiar. both hate private schools whose colors are red.

  • I like the UCLA script and their band uniforms. However I prefer Cal Band's introduction and their rendition of Big C over UCLA.

Unfortunately I go to neither UC! I go to Davis D:

  • Why did they cut the song short after the 8-clap at 0:41?

Do they feel embarrased for stealing Big C and want to get off the field as quickly as possible?

    LOLOLOL

  • You stupid ignorant Bears and trOJans...your jealousy of UCLA reeks! The Bruiins have their own fight song called "The Mighty Bruins" and our version of "Sons of Westwood" is better than "Big C" and better known since we have a much more successful athletics program than both UC Berkeley and $UC.

  • ucla stole cals colors, fight song and damm mascot. pussy ass bruins and baby blue...FIGHT ON for ol SC!

  • ... fucla has no real fight song... really.

  • yeah... fucla steals music, and then renames it. like big c, gershwin's strike up the band, and the 20th fox century movie theme...

  • The entire university should have been terminated for good for plagiarism...

  • Everybody always singles out UCLA for using "Sons of Westwood." Why not bag on UC Davis for using their own arrangement of "Big C?" Only because they aren't as well-known?

As for "Strike Up The Band," UCLA didn't steal the music at all. George and Ira Gershwin wrote new lyrics and presented the song, renamed "Strike Up The Band for UCLA," to the school as a gift.

I'm not even going to bother with the "20th Century Fox Fanfare," as several school's have used it at one time or another.

  • UC Davis's arrangement of "Big C" (played in 6/8 time) is actually the original arrangement played by Cal in the early days.

Because UC Davis was an extension of the Cal Campus in the beginning of its school history as its Ag School, a lot of the University of California traditions came with it. Hence, that's why UC Davis's other fight songs include "Big C" , "Sons of California".

At a certain point, Cal changed its "Big C" arrangement to its current 4/4 time signature it plays today.

  • Thanks for the history lesson there.

Aren't all UC schools essentially an extension of the original campus in Berkeley? I know UCLA used to be called the "South Branch of the University of California" before it changed it's name to UCLA in 1927. Also, their mascot used to be the Grizzlies until the UC Berkeley student council suggested a name change to the Bruins.

  • This is very correct.

    UC = UC Berkeley

UC Agricultural Branch = UC Davis

    UC Southern Branch = UCLA

    UC Medical School = UCSF

    etc...

  • Where do/did you go, LA City? lmao UCLA - commuter school at best - one step above Arizona State. lol You guys might be good at football next year - just keep Rick away from betting pools.

  • ewcorpuz shut up!!!!!!! we had that song first it takes talent to make a fight song & UCLA just took ours how low!!!!! GRRRAH!!!!! ucla sucks

  • FUCK JCLA

  • We own that song now. Go Bruins!

  • go Bruins

  • go big c
