To hell with the slow tempo! - Just listen to the glorious playing of the VPO conducted by a master of Mozart Operas. Then there is the singing - could this be matched today? Doubt it
Although noted more as a Lieder singer, I love Fischer-Dieskau in opera, particularly Mozart. I saw Ponnelle;s Figaro production in Vienna a few years ago but not of course with this cast but it was a very good performance and the best looking Figaro I have ever seen. Thanks for this posting.
Waaay too slow (as others have said) and monotonous. I get that Ponnelle was trying to achieve a certain effect here (and it may work better as part of the whole film as elias said), but I had a hard time listening to this--and Cosa Sento has always been one of my favorite numbers from this glorious opera. But thank you for posting this, elias 12186--one never gets tired of Mozart!
It's hard to watch these clips individually because the tempo is so slow. When you sit through the whole video, it doesn't seem like the case, you get used to it or you stop focusing on it, but 1 clip alone is hard for me.
This film version of this universal comic masterpiece assembles some of the great voices of a quarter century ago for a most memorable performance. Bravo! See also Voi Che Sapete and the Finale from this version also on YouTube last I checked.
Great Ponnelle's production. And.... Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is so charming with his grizzled wisp :P
