This is a truly sad song. That is not a critisism but a compliment. This is my favorite song of Mary's. Sadness is a very important and useful emotion. It can be very enlightening and focusing. It can strongly motivate us in good directions (tho oftentimes not so good). The good things that come forth from sadness are not lost behind the bad things, but are the more highlighted by them.
