During his administration the nation was involves in many conflicts involving slavery, Buchanan never did anything to solve the problems and that led to a irreconcilable discontent between the north and south. Also the release of the book "Uncle Tom's cabin" affected his presidency. He according to the Presidential ranking, is the worst president so far. He let the Union fall apart.

For those who care about history, he was the first president to be photographed in office. He may or may not have been gay and the use of the term "Miss Nancy and Aunt Fancy" by Andrew Jackson may have been part of the (very, very) nasty politics of the day or it may have been true.
