I own the video, BowieLover2, and I agree with you a hundred percent. Good description of the facts. The two are separate. The int'view had nothing to do with UFOs. You were just clarifying, so I don't see why anyone would have a problem with that.

There isn't anything to defend. David Bowie has been very much interested in UFOs, and has admitted seeing them on multiple occasions.
Do some research on the internet and in biographies if you do not believe this.
The vertical take-off is something that has been reportedly seen by more than a few witnesses, and, it seems Bowie is aware of this, possibly from his own experence/s.

this is actually from the Dick Cavett interview with David Bowie and he is talking about not liking flying in an AIRPLANE. This has nothing to do with UFOs. There is even the full interview floating around here in YouTube somewhere. And he was JOKING when he was saying it should just go up like a saucer...that is why he LAUGHED.
