Charles Darwin Station "Lonesome George" Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos

Lonesome George came from a different island in the Galapagos where goats, carelessly brought in as livestock long ago, had wiped out the entire species of tortoises there. When they went to the island in the 70's to rescue the remaining turtles, George was the ONLY survivor that was found. The goats have been exterminated from that island.

George's species was rare even before he was born because tortoises like these don't reproduce very often.

It is sad, that none of the eggs that George impregnated those turtles with don't hatch. In fact, a $10,000 reward is being offered to anyone who finds a suitable female mate for George. These kinds of turtles can live between 100 to 150 years, which means George may have another 20 to 70 years left to live.

People have been trying to get George to mate with similar turtles of his kind to keep the species alive, but he's always resisted since being rescued. Apparently he has produced eggs with them, but none of them viable. George may live for another 20 to 70 years, so there's still time but it can't be wasted.

The problem is turtles keep to themselves mostly. They're not really sociable or in groups like monkeys or fish.

turtles seem to thrive here, in Canada it'sd more likely to be frogs and crickets depending where in Canada you live.
